I think it was more about the principle of it all. They were making money, just not as much as they could be, with zero benefit to them.

I think Parliament was more to blame and George III was more or less an easy scapegoat for the colonists. I'm sure he had influence to a capacity, but it's easier to blame one man than blame a system of men.
