This. Jonas was way better than the action hero version of Daniel. He really shouldn't have returned. Seasons 7-8 sucked ass because, except Judge, none of actors wanted to be there.

O'Neil was useless in later seasons, his sentire purpose was shitty quips and being confused at space science stuff that was already explained 30 times, he became borderline senile. Tapping could be considered the main character actually, she is also the only character of the main SG1 cast to have an important role in Atlantis

You can always tell that Judge is the only person who cares about properly pronouncing all the lore names, while Hammond of Texas just fucking says anything he wants, even in the same episode.

>>
>>214557727
It's funny on rewatches seeing how hard the show leaned on Tapping through S7 and S8. There were several episodes where she was pretty much the only member of the main cast engaged in the primary plotline.

if he was the main guy why didn't he get top billing? macguyver was the selling point and the team leader, that's why rda gets first credit.

Nah, RDA completely checking out but still wanting a paycheck did that
>>
>>214558918
>Isn't that basically because she was the only one to defeat the only villain left, her human replicator
That's a part of it but they took it even further.
There's the episode where Carter was stranded alone on the Prometheus, and the Avenger 2.0 episode, neither of which had nothing to do with Replicarter. But Tapping was the only one of the main cast to feature in them for more than 5 minutes.
>>
>>214558871
exactly. it starts on earth at jack's house, and rda has the most screen time. he's very clearly the leading man. in the movie it's more of a dual protagonist situation but in the show it's jack all the way.

In general I liked Jonas. They did a good job of casting the role. My only problem was the whole 'accelerated learning' bit was too obviously there to fill in what otherwise would be an glaring hole. Wish they came up with a better solution. Outside of that, Shanks probably was butthurt over how easily Daniel was replaced by Jonas. It still confuses me a bit why they didn't find an excuse to ship him off to Atlantis when Daniel returned to SG-1.
>>
>>214559829

They knew they were doing Atlantis during the time when they had to decide "what the fuck are we going to do with Jonas now that Daniel is back full time". Having time to set that up in the show would be an advantage rather than it looking like a last minute 'Poochie returned to his home planet' deal. That said, the Rodney-Sheppard dynamic was pretty good so if they did put Jonas on Atlantis, it might have got in the way of that developing.

Unpopular opinion but I really liked the Ori. I liked anything that showed what dicks the Ancients really were so I liked Anubis in that vein too. I always felt they got too much of a pass for being "the gate builders" whereas in reality they were so busy being "enlightened" that they were completely stuck up their own assholes.
>>
>>214562162
at least tapping isn't jewish
>>
>>214562735
I liked them in concept, and what they could have been. They were brought in too late. If they had been an early season enemy, or had been used in one of the spinoffs, they could have worked.
>>
>>214562793
they were too op to be an early enemy to be honest
>>
>>214562793
They would have steamrolled in early seasons. As it is, their defeat was barely believable and required a super MacGuffin device at the 11th hour.
>>
>>214562824
>>214562858
Well that was the problem exactly. They had to be written to be so OP because of how OP all the good guys had gotten. Which is why I said I liked them in concept, and they would have worked better as an early season enemy. They would have been written for those seasons if they were on those seasons, not be a straight 1:1 cut/paste time travel thing.

The problem with them was they were too super powerful, and the power creep bullshit ruined SG-1. The space legos bullshit were the worst though, they should've been removed. I would've liked more seasons of Goa'uld System Lords and scheming and infighting there with the Tok'Ra fleshed out, but that all got backburner to Anubis the super death powerful villain and the space legos shit.
>>214562858
>As it is, their defeat was barely believable and required a super MacGuffin device at the 11th hour.
To be fair, that was necessary for Anubis and the space legos too, so it was a problem already established with SG1 before the Ori were even conceived.

The power creep issue was something I liked in SGA with the Wraith, who were very powerful and threatening, but had weaknesses and were slow to mobilize to pace the series better.
>>
>>214563031
wraith are gay and replicators are cool. fight me
>>
>>214562935
The good guys weren't even that OP though. They were still far below Asgard level and you could argue maybe even below Goauld level simply because they didn't have the fleet strength and blanket use of a lot of their best tech, like Sarcophagus, Healing devices, etc.

>>214563031
I always thought Stargate was good about keeping their heroes balanced, in fact it's something they said they explicitly tried to do and lampshaded in 200. Everything had drawbacks. It makes sense that a military expedition exploring alien worlds wants to take and progress that technology. I enjoyed how it didn't always go smoothly too, like the X301 nearly killing it's pilots.

The biggest misstep I think was actually the Lucian Alliance, how they were ever a threat was never believable at the time they were introduced, and that's before we even get to the shitshow that was Universe. The Goauld are classic but were stretched too long, they should have been defeated/broken earlier, then you can get to the Lucian Alliance before Earth gets a lot of their tech/should have learned the lessons from later seasons.
>>
>>214563072
this is canon, wraith are cocksuckers while replicators are hetero to the point they replicated carter

You're getting bogged down in semantics, and missing the forest for the trees. I'm saying they would have worked better if they had been written much earlier in the shows life.

I find the later seasons annoying because they found the perfect solution with Fair Game in S4, the immediate threat to Earth is removed but the teams are still in danger when they go offworld. The Asgard will protect them from annihilation but not hold their hands or otherwise interfere, Goolds stay in their lane but will still try sneaky shit.
After Anubis I lost count of all the briefing room scenes where they have to explain why the Goold with new awesome tech haven't got round to invading because they are busy painting their pyramids or some shit.
From then on it was just a load of fetch quests to find a super weapon to beat the bad guys super weapon, Anubis super ship, Eye of Ra, Ancient beam weapon, Dakara device, Merlin's asshole etc. etc.

I don't mind them in concept but the implementation is really shitty. So you're basically done with the space Egyptians whose troops wear chainmail and a bit of armor using staff weapons. Now the next enemy arrives and they're "gods" whose troops wear basic scale armor and they're also using staff weapons but they look like someone made a fork out of aluminium foil and stuck it on a plastic stick. The fuck. Should have given them space crossbows or something if you really want to keep the medieval theme.

>>214565381
Shank basically felt like his dramatic skills as an actor were being wasted as Danny Jackson, even though Daniel was the main character of SG-1 for 3 seasons straight in the beginning, so he started asking for script changes. They said no, you're doing enough as is, he quits, goes off-Broadway, all of his plays bomb for a year straight. So he wound up on Smallville for almost 3 seasons as Hawkman.

Smallville's Crisis on infinite Earth's storyline ends, and he's out of the job again, so he goes back to being on Stargate, where they roll out the red carpet for him, and it becomes 100% about either Daniel or Samantha. So basically, almost nothing changed, including Danny becoming a God, AGAIN.

I think it's not so much about which seasons are good or bad, but more about which story premises are good for TV and which aren't. The Ori subplot veering off into a literal fucking DnD session, for example, was not cool. Going to Atlantis station and learning that the hologram there was actually an ancient, then kawooshing an Ori ship was very cool.

Great episode. Her next appearance was pretty good too, but it would have been better had it resulted in her capture and cooperation. She wasn't a genocidal shit weasel like the rest. But they flanderized everything and everybody eventually.

Humanity has expanded throughout the galaxy and become its own form of tyrannical regime. heres how i saw it going in blind.

daniel is the main character in the movie.
daniel is the main character in the show up until shortly before he leaves. i was actually shocked he died since he was the main character. then it sort of focused on jonas and tealc being aliens on earth, then jack starts taking prominence pretty quick and jonas gets shafted. then daniel comes back but now hes uber cucked and not the main character. jack is SHORTLY the focus and then carter takes the main stage and rides it all the way to the end where the writers forced focus on the new characters but it was still carter all the way.

i dont understand people saying jack is the main character when he pops up like twice then quits
>>

I know this post is a joke but its still making me mad. Jack is the main character. Its not a debate.
>>
>>214567646
It's better hard sci-fi. Only complaints I have:
Teyla.
Weir leaving then kinda coming back (actress being a cunt irl).
Carson getting killed and brought back in the lamest way possible.
Ford never showing up again.
Jason Mamoa not even trying to act, just there for the paycheck.

Despite those, I like it better than later SG-1

what i didnt like about atlantis was the p90s. i thought it was REALLY fucking stupid they werent scrambling to stock up on alien weapons. they just have infinite ammo. theyre cut off from earth and blasting off with a limited supply. in sg1 theyre right there in the base and bullets are better than those shitty slow staffs.

atlantis couldve been different. make the villagers the background staff to bolster their numbers. use and study alien weapons and ships. but no. they get new people in from earth to replace the dead ones and have infinite p90s

It was the same actor though.

Is Jacks actor the only one that doesn't seem miserable when interacting with fans? like the rest seem to hate it and see it as a free convention paycheck but hes always there smiling and having a good old time.

Was he actually not putting on a character like the rest and thats just how he is irl?

>Do two career defining roles that makes you a household name across like 4 generations of families
>Retire and live a comfy live
>Meanwhile the rest are constantly chasing their next big break that doesn't come while riding the convention memberberries to pay for botched cosmetic surgery and alcohol.
Anderson was confident enough to grow old with grace.

He was already an established star, the rest were random leafs who won the lottery. Outside of character actors like Hammond of Texas who will always find work, the only actor who had a career breakthrough was Jason Momoa. Doing conventions is your pension plan, meeting smelly nerds is part of the job. And these days if you're not retarded you can do a podcast like Lex Luthor, Starbuck from nu BSG or those two from Enterprise.

Honestly the convention rodeo sounds like hell. You need to be a saint to deal with that much autism on a daily basis.

Shanks: One, Daniel needs to be louder, angrier, and have access to a flying armor suit. Two, whenever Daniel's not on screen, all the other characters should be asking "Where's Daniel"? Three--
Martin Wood: Great, great. Just leave them right there on the floor on your way out.

Daniel should have returned, but as James Spader. The rest of the cast repeatedly tell him he's much better and than before and more handsome.

I love stargate threads

No you don't.

Jason Momoa would do conventions after being in Atlantis before he became huge and he was super decent and happy to be there.

She was cute. I wish she had stuck around for longer. Those other human replicators all sucked.

They should have just brought back both. Why not have two Daniels on the team?

>Show was canadian
>Originally a show about a conspiracy theory based around Cheyenne Mountain the same way Stranger Things was originally based on the Montauk Project
>The military stuff was added to the movie to give it normie appeal
>Time comes to make a tv show and the canucks dont think they have the budget
>Turns out the air force gives them tons of shit for free for over a decade because the recruits all love stargate

This is the story i've heard, anyone ever been in the air force to know how true it is?

The real USAF is way more retarded than you can possibly imagine

Cheaper to support a show churning out propaganda than it is to try to produce one from scratch. Especially if you can just choose one that already exists and has a developed fanbase by default.
