Sometimes I wonder how the movie would have gone if Batman had just killed him.And that makes it interesting to me because hurr durr Batman doesn't kill, but TDK is honestly interesting enough for you to suspend judgment of these archetypal characters and look at them within the context of the direct story. The entire reason the Joker wins is because he instinctively knows how everybody's going to behave. Batman, Gordon, Dent, he's got them all dead to rights, he assesses their characters and predicts their actions. At no point does anybody surprise him, except the average person on the ferries. All the "hero" figures, he understands perfectly. That's his superpower. It's not that he's insane it's that he's terrifyingly sane and can see things clearer than most of the characters, including our big three hereoes of Gordon/Dent/Bruce.
