Think of it in terms of Christianity or Buddhism: life is good, and by you being good and selfless you achieve spiritual enlightenment. The dark side is actually a spiritual imbalance that draws out sin and selfishness. The Sith are very clearly evil people, and as proven by Anakin, all that want is a slippery slope that is not easily controlled. You can be redeemed through good deeds, but the dark side is not a natural way to be. By bringing balance to the force, you are removing that unnatural imbalance from the equation.

Originally Lucas planned a whole other trilogy post RotJ where Luke would find his sister and defeat the Emperor but Lucas decided against it hence why RotJ feels conceptually messy with little for the characters to do. Luke's sister would not have been Leia but this was folded together.
