What do you think of Patlabor 2, /tv/?
>>214596957Go back >>>/a/
>>214596957The less Oshii influence on the franchise, the better. The Patlabor OVA, TV series, and first film were committee projects where a lot of people had a lot of influence and there was no dominant creator. And that was for the better. Oshii's biggest solo contribution was writing some comedy episodes for the TV series when they needed filler. But Patlabor 2 got more or less given to him and he decided to just remake the entire franchise in his image, because that is what Oshii always does if he can get his fingers into something. The animation is really good, nonetheless. Probably the best ever regarding on-model mechanical animation. There are of course other anime that are better in other areas. But Patlabor 2 is the best in that niche.

Literal GOAT anime
>>214596975Every anime stand alone film premiered in theaters belong to /tv/ as same as western animation films. You lost.

>>214597336Source on the making of Patlabor OVA being very committee? As a big Oshii fan those his credited episodes of the OVA are so incredibly Oshii I have a hard time imagining that it wasn't majorly his.
>>214597740If that's the case, then what is /tv/'s opinion of the Odd Taxi movie?
>>214598431Nta but Patlabor was made by Headgear, which is a circle of mecha genre writers and art designers. It's not just Oshii leading the project, it's a collective effort.
>>214600176Well duh, those are two very different claims though. I refuse to believe that Oshii was not the "dominant force" for the first 5 OVA episodes without evidence.
>>214599621the hedgehog was fucking annoying and ruined the show
>>214598431>It was supposed to be an omnibus directed by various anime directors at first, but Mamoru Oshii joined as a series director. According to the magazine, "Oshii said he'd focus on the 'hired director' role." His job was to organize other members' ideas. However, his first storyboard and mecha design were totally different from the original concept. (That storyboard was reprinted in TVA&OVA ARCHIVES and some other brochures.) Oshii ignored Izubuchi's mecha design and basic premises of the series from the beginning. He wanted to do more grounded and mature mecha anime, not young police officers' heroic story. Other members rejected the storyboard.>Oshii still wanted to change the main labor's design, so he took a majority vote at that time. Oshii lost by 3-2. Oshii's labor idea was turned into Asuka MPL-96.>https://ehoba.hatenablog.com/entry/2020/08/27/220852Oshii originally joined Headgear as a hired gun, and in that role didn't have the same desires as the rest of the team, but because he was one among many peers, didn't have the ability at the time to push for his way.He was not a part of the team that created the world of Patlabor, but instead had his role in storyboarding within the general outline the majority ruled for. For Patlabor 2, he was handed control because the series writer Ito, was exhausted from the TV and the second OVA series and didn't have the stamina left to make another film. >https://spice.eplus.jp/articles/285200>"If Oshii had been the director, the biggest difference would have been in 'Two Karuizawas'. That's because Oshii's idea of Shinobu's character was in GekiPato 2, and by the time Oshii joined the new OVA, six scripts had already been completed and he wasn't in a position to take on the role. I was exhausted from working on the theatrical version, so I said, 'Oshii, do whatever you want,' in order to finish it, and that's how it turned out... In that sense, I'm an accomplice too," he said.Google TL
>>214601024That's interesting but it doesn't really change my mind. Based on the movies I already assumed that both the tone and type of show the OVA was, wasn't what he actually wanted to make however that doesn't mean he wasn't responsible for it. I'm still sure he is the main person responsible for its quality. I just wish they'd been able to tard wrangle him to make more of it like that.
amazing police thriller, haters will never understand
>>214596957Yeah sure it looks amazing but by god is it boring.
>>214601437im not that interested in Japanese post-war politics sorry.
>>214596957>that monologue Oshii KNOWS nukes are fake holy shit its been a very long time since i've last seen it, but that strange incoherent babbling makes some sense now
>>214596957best anime of allhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QdrtTd9JP30>>214598103mega kino>>214601530>boringfiltered
>>214596957It's like GitS - visually gorgeous with outstanding music. It might be my all time fave OST.But it's a giant load of tedious nonsense and kinda painful to sit through with the endless, babbling monologues.Mamoru Oshii sucks. The OVA was ten times more entertaining despite not looking/sounding as good.
There's nothing worse than anime that tries to be deep/philosophical/political.Stay in your lane, anime creators - Stick to action/horror/scifi/comedy etc.
>>214603953You're in luck, anime has stopped trying to be 2deep4u since.
>>214596957It was Kino, but Patlabor 1 had a better story.
>>214596957No joy
>>214599621Where can I watch it?
>>214605796I repeat, no joy
It seems people either love it or hate it, kind of like Gits 2. Anyone happen to see Avalon? Is it good?
>>214596957Absolute Kino about hypocrisy of Japan's peaceful demeanor post-war.
>>214603953yeah and now the chinks have taken over because japan has no voice that isn't just lusting over children with terrible forced humor and anyone can make that.
>>214603803I watched it a couple of times and while the Coup scene and the aircraft interception are pure kino with every rewatch I become more painfully aware of how retarded the plot actually is>go on peacekeeping mission in Cambodia>get attacked>isnt a peacekeeping mission supposed to be peaceful????>what if peace le not real>spend years of preparation and then mastermind the Japanese government into overthrowing itself (in a crisis that could've been resolved in a couple of emails) so people realise peace le not real>???>profit
>>214596957I don't know a whole lot about the political themes/backstory for this movie, but I enjoyed it a lot regardless. It looks and sounds beautiful, you can tell a lot of care went into making the thing.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0HvmqGtoY_0
Kanuka or Nao lads? Love them both but Kanuka just edges towards the winner for me.
>>214596957It's ok, first one was better.
>>214596957The highest kino.I don't care if it has a different vibe from the OVAs/Show, I like 'em both.
Kino soundtrack
>>214598103I love Oshii's signature vibe scenes. https://youtu.be/amKt8ttja1E?si=6m_VktaMsdy04Nwihttps://youtu.be/ARTLckN9e7I?si=_i9ohO0uHe24cXQq
>>214596957Expected MECHS, what I got was very cerebral takes about the inherit violence in the modern world wide political status quo.The movie slows down a bit too much in between big scenes, but the visuals more than make up for that.
>>214596975This is a film, not a movie
It's like if Michael Mann made a mecha anime. You get fewer and fewer anime films like this as you come out of the 90s, making a movie through the medium of anime vs making an "anime movie" with all the associated tropes and stylistic cues. I guess studios realised the profitable western audiences would settle for cheap shouty chibi shounen dross about ancient evils awakening and wacky talking animals.
>>214608101Zoomies can't appreciate how much effort goes into making animation like this
>>214608101Zoomie here this looks good but unfortunately I can't truly appreciate how much effort went into making this
One of top tier bubble era anime.Akira is for plebs.Partlabor is real high-tier taste.I once rejected friend request because gaijin said Akira was his favorite.
>>214596957Patlabor 3 is cooler it has a big monster
>>214596957Based. Absolute classic from back when anime was hand drawn and had soul.
>>214596957phenomenal
>tfw Oshii will never get a proper budget on anything ever again because the modern industry favours quantity over quality
>>214596957I wanted mechs fighting and instead got 2 hours of detective movie and 20 minutes of ok action scenes
