it's Refn, you gotta know what you are getting into. style over substance - but it's like a mass overload of style over substance - and so that makes it good. I loved the show

Other than this and Twin Peaks season 3 is there anything else that feels like a dozen hour experimental movie in the form of a tv series?Copenhagen Cowboy too I guess but that wasn't great.

>>214641384Unironically filtered. It's not a revenge cop story, at all. That's sort of the point. I liked the moral quandry Martin has here in this scene, and Viggo just stands in the same spot while Martin wanders around the scene going over things and trying to justify himself. The funny thing too is in general the guy is the type of people they routinely take out, Martin sensed this deep down but he never went over the edge and it was personal wrath instead of real judgement.Like the film Riders of Justice, which isn't by Refn but is Danish as well; that movie the righteous morality of the characters is put into question by creeping doubt that perhaps they made a mistake. Cool vibes.
>>214643144This guy made me laugh
>>214643144This and the scene in the squad room were the funniest things in film that year.
>>214643913The ukelele concert in Ep4 or the Christ play? I haven't gotten to Ep8 yet on my rewatch so don't have screens of the play but yeah on rewatch the whole segment in episode 4 at the station was great, not only the LT hamming it up, but then the prank bit, and Viggo's code for Martin and the desk sargeant wondering about the ducks. Great scenes.
>>214639819>that wasn't great.Strongly disagree, it was the most absurd thing he's ever made but was so confident in itself that it looped back around to "this is fucking sick"The fact that it ended just as the plot was taking off will forever make me mad.
>>214644223I need to get around to seeing Copenhagen Cowboy.
>normal show, but we'll have the characters pause for 30s between every line of dialogHack shit lolAlso, the muttzus character was kino in episode 2, but as soon as he starts talking in later episodes I couldn't take him seriously at all. Somehow cartel grandpa was the best character overall.

>>214644283"Fever dream" is an overused descriptor but it's a real trip. I feel like his boyfriend Hideo Kojima was a big influence, there are a lot of completely ludicrous beats that are played totally straight.
>>214644223I was a bit harsh, should have said not as great. Still enjoyed it more than almost all television. I also expected it to have a definitive ending since Refn must realise there's no way anyone would sign up for a season 2 of his insane shit.
>>214644435>his boyfriend Kojima
>>214644283>Copenhagen CowboyIt's not as good. The way I'd compare it is that TOTDY is like a 'best of' album for Refn, where CC is experimental looking for a new sound. It has moments that are brilliant. But as a whole, it's a lot weaker. And, unlike TOTDY where the ending is very poignant and feels deliberate in the way nothing's resolved, in CC it feels like the story is just unfinished.

>>214648713I don't know what you mean. The guy in black is Alfonso, who is being an arrogant douchebag and disrespectful of Jesus and Yaritza who are essentially the new King and Queen in LA, and using this transitionary time after Magdalena's death (the woman in the portraits all over her house, no narcissism here at all), to poke around in and immerse himself in the luxuries of people above his station.Jesus and Yaritza quickly remind Alfonso of his proper position in the cartel heirarchy.
>>214648222The only things he didn't write were Drive and Copenhagen Cowboy. Drive's writing is uninteresting in comparison to his other works which to me made it worse than his other stuff, and Copenhagen Cowboy might as well have been written by him.
>>214649766this is weirdly sexual
>>214639819The Curse, to its detriment though it would have been a fantastic 2 1/2 hour movie instead of the meandering mess it ended up as.
>>214649961
>>214649961>weirdlyHave you not seen the show? It gets much weirder
>>214649961>>214650264Yeah the Oedipal themes with Jesus and Magdalena appear early in the series, and when he returns to his home to restore his mother's empire, Yaritza (his new wife) immediately moves into his mother's room. He treats her like his mother, both desiring her but also a little fearful of her. Those were interesting scenes, his mannerisms when approaching his mom's suites at the house. The second episode I got some vibes that the Don, Magdalena's brother, might've been overly fond of his baby sister too.
>>214650914>>214649961Not that the Magdalena focus is the only sexually deviant part of the show; Martin's obsession with jailbait, and Janey's perversions aside, Janey's father had a ton of issues himself. Might be corruption of the wealthy and elite just bound to happen.

>>214651465>so muchThere's like a thread maybe every month but probably less than that. Also, he's recently finished filming his latest flick which will be a good indication of how badly the bots are. So I did got around to a grid for Episode 5, I went purely chronological with the screenshots top-left bottom-top and it seems ok but I'm not likeing the color balance as much. For example with Episode 4 (>>214644283) I moved caps around more on theme for each row but also was more color balanced so maybe I should do that for Episode 5, although the chronology goes really smooth in this one.

>>214659545On my rewatch the opening scene Larry mentions that women manipulate everything really hits hard. My take with the series is it's about two women who seek justice or retribution through violence; and while Diana divines wrongdoers for justice, she uses men (Viggo and Martin) to enact the retribution, Yaritza is both diviner and enforcer. When Diana becomes aware of Yartiza's presence she likes that potential.I think the 10th episode just is an exhibition of these two women; Diana having cathartic release from her stresses (she has meloncholy over Viggo's health through the whole series), and Yaritza making overt moves as the Priestess of Death.
