It's hilarious to me that Disney is having to brainstorm how to make shows that appeal to young men.

Hey Disney, get this: "Action man kills the bad guys."

You can even have multiple versions of this. Action spy kills the henchmen. Action knight kills the foul knaves. Action fantasy hero kills the monsters. Action commando kills the goons. Action cop kills the gangsters. Action ranger kills the desperadoes. Action space captain kills the aliens. Action rebel kills the jackboots. Action barbarian kills the sorcerer. The possibilities and variations are practically endless while also only really needing to make the same fucking movie over and over again.

Young men are literally the easiest audience to please so long as you don't actively resent them.
>>
>>214659621
When you start seeing this garbage, its kind of hard to stop seeing it.
>>
>>214660180
Disney doesn't want that, they want "Action man is a bumbling depressed impotent oaf while action girlboss saves the day"
>>
>>214660180
we cant have that

>>
>>214660180
Or, if they really want to go with a female protagonist, MAKE HER SEXY AS FUCK!

Jolie's Lara Croft. OG Red Sonja. Kate Beckinsale as a leather vampire.
>>
>>214660892
Yeah, the formula is basically set and they had it down to a science, and then they fucked it up for no reason.
>>
>>214659046
This. It's an ok action movie. But the title killed it. All they had to do was add "of Mars" or "and the Princess of Mars". Easy blockbuster lmao.

For some reason, most media companies these days think that buying an IP is basically like buying serfs. Like there's some fandom or audience tied to the IP like serfs are tied to the land and they have to serve you and consume all your products no matter what so long as you hold their IP, freeing you up to go for some kind of wider audience and ignore them almost entirely. And then they're bewildered every time that turns out to not be true no matter how many times the failure is repeated.

It's honestly insane how easy it is to make something appealing to men. All you have to do is make some basic wish fulfillment slop where the every man saves the day and gets the girl at the end. If you want women to watch the film too, give him a good male friend.
>>
>>214658814
I always liked this movie. Saw it the day it came out and the theater was packed...was surprised it flopped.
Disney (at the time and probably still now) really let their films become too bloated. Like all the pirates of carribean movies are 30 minutes too long , if not more.
Lone ranger was way too long
John Carter had too much stuff going on instead of keeping it stream lined.
John Carter should have been close to 90 minutes rather than over 2 hours.

Oh and then we can put a love triangle in there too! But get this, one of her love interests is actually secretly a bad guy. Boom, twist! No one will see it coming

it's the same problem we have with irony and subversion: how would kids understand Shrek if they didn't know the basic fairytales, first? and for the most part they DO teach straightforward, good values - of course you can then say "yeah, but mindlessly shooting down bad guys would be DUBIOUS in real life!"

I can’t wait for Disney to make a new IP about dinosaurs or ninjas. Something that boys like. And then by the third round of rewrites and reshoots it becomes yet another girlboss movie about generational trauma.
>>
>>214658814
The problem with Disney and every company is that they try to have all their products appeal to everyone instead of letting certain groups like their own things.

It is okay for Girls to like Princesses and Witches.

It is okay for Boys to like Ninjas and Dinosaurs.

The problem is trying to make boys like girl stuff and trying to make girls like boy stuff.
Sure some stuff can overlap. But to force everyone to like everything just ends in disappointment.

>John Carter should have been close to 90 minutes rather than over 2 hours.
i think it was pretty well paced, although maybe the starter normie-world scenes could have been cut back and John being thrown onto Mars sooner if you HAD to cut back on time.

I walked into the theatre not knowing a thing about that universe and walked out stunned at how much fun that film was. Its a shame it flopped.

They could make not gay shit, but they won't.

i read the source material, it was kinda shit, the core ideas and the world-building were great, but the dialogue and plot-progression was dogshit and needed a total overhaul. Thats not a slight on the author, considering the books are ancient and predate alot of other classics however, its just not fit for purpose as-is.

They did an amazing job cleaning it up for cinema.

they just have been trying various combinations of 'putting a chick in it and making it lame and gay' without success soo far.

for the record, i have a bad memory, i REALLY enjoyed watching it in the cinema from a person who never knew the books existed, and i forgot the name of the movie countless times because John Carter is soo fucking generic a name it just slipped my mind constantly.

Its one of the worst names ever given to a film, until that magical niggers movie came out a few years back at least.
