I get what they were going for, but the villains were complete caricatures who didn't fit the tone of the movie at all and made the movie swing between almost slapstick parody and sci-fi drama in a very awkward way. Also I still don't get why they made the girlfriend character act like a complete psycho in just a few scenes, but then never did anything with that and just made her out to be this completely wholesome and benevolent leader figure. I get that she was being protective of Mickey but she just went completely psycho several times over relatively minor things and nobody really cared.

>>214689930Why do Bong's Korean films have knockout directing, editing is slick, visuals are fantastic with great cinematography and style, but when he makes films in America they're shot in an incredibly generic way and have extremely drab muted colour grading? Is it a studio system thing or is Bong doing this shit on purpose? This film had a couple of decent shots, and an interesting use of a piano soundtrack but otherwise looked like any other movie and was just really grey. The way the movie is structured is weird cause it kinda starts with a montage introducing a bunch of characters, we alos get a random flashback in a middle of the movie (to those psychopathic clone scientists), and then a montage summing up things real fast in the end. Steven Yeun's character disappears for most of the film and his story begins and ends with those starting and ending montages, the story with a jealous girl trying to steal one of the Mickey's away gets sacked, she just becomes evil then suddenly in the end she is good again and also a lesbian. It feels to me the film was completely different in the script. It was probably an ensemble movie like Nashville or Boogie Nights where we followed a bunch if characters more or less equally, but the studio didn't like this and forced Bong to re-edit the movie into a more linear narrative.
