this, for me it's essentially a somewhat generic (but well made) sci fi film and a high quality M83 music video for most of the movie. But then suddenly the ending hits like a truck and I'm left feeling overwhelmed with optimism and love for the human race

this song is gay as fuck, just generic sappy pop music. i was expecting some cool synthwave beats when i saw m83 mentioned. i saw oblivion when it originally came out, but wasn't aware of synthwave at the time so i figured i missed out on a cool soundtrack i might appreciate more today.
i was on the cusp of rewatching it too, based on these positive comments about it, but i'm not so sure now. what a fucking shitty gay song. is it actually in the movie or does it only play during the credits or something? i might give it a chance if it doesn't play during the movie, or at least if only the instrumental version plays.

Obligatory
>When I was sixteen, I won a great victory. I felt in that moment I would live to be a hundred. Now I know I shall not see thirty. None of us know our end, really, or what hand will guide us there. A king may move a man, a father may claim a son, but that man can also move himself, and only then does that man truly begin his own game. Remember that howsoever you are played or by whom, your soul is in your keeping alone, even though those who presume to play you be kings or men of power. When you stand before God, you cannot say, "But I was told by others to do thus," or that virtue was not convenient at the time. This will not suffice. Remember that.

the first and second act of the movie are excellent but the third act shits the bed. Regardless of whether you agree or disagree with the political message of the film, it's poorly handled - it goes from this semi-realistic reinterpretation of the life and times of the crusader kings with a heavy focus on duty to god, morality, and the importance of good leadership and suddenly tries to cram 1000 years of philosophical change and evolution into the last 20 minutes such that the characters suddenly start advocating for a pseudo-modern cosmopolitan system of government out of nowhere (and suddenly the entire film becomes about the creation of this 'kingdom of heaven'). Again, whether you like or dislike the politics, it's POORLY DONE. It's very much an example of a film which is lesser than the sum of its parts, because the first two acts are top tier crusade kino.

There's no reason to speak to the dead at all, but he couldn't help himself from being a smartass.
>>
>>214693932
Yes, the Director's Cut makes several plot points make a lot more sense.

The aforementioned change to the protagonist's past, for example. Him being an engineer explains why he knows about setting up an irrigation system, or his knowledge on siege warfare.
>>
>>214693976
yeah I'm watching the director's cut then, having read some more about it it sounds like they fixed virtually every problem I had with the film (insufficient character development to justify what happens in the 3rd act + the 3rd act being rushed). Unfortunately it seems like they kept that cringe ass speech but I can tolerate that

PoTC was historically a very risky project and you just don't see that kind of stuff getting the greenlight today. It was pre-capeshit and pre-Lucas Films purchase so it was one of the last times we saw an artist be given free reign and a huge budget.

On top of this the director was a VFX artist most special effects were done in-house as opposed to shipping scenes off to malaysian CGI studios for post-production. Only the 2000s could have created the cultural and technological conditions for a lightning in a bottle like this, I doubt we will ever see anything like it again.

Alexander, Napoleon, Hitler.
Those are the big 3. Oh, right, Cesar.
Maybe, MAYBE Washington. But who knows? In 3000 years if America falls shortly after today it will only be the richest nation at one point in time. Maybe not even that. Does anyone here know the richest nation on Earth for any given century?

If Achilles existed today, he would be whoring himself on every popular social media platform.
>>
>>214699211
>If Achilles existed today
that is paradoxical. it is impossible for people like him to exist because all men are incredibly weak physically and especially mentally now. basically your great grandfather fought in WW2 so that you could sit around gooning and playing nintendo switch at 30 years old

Achilles is telling him he lacks the reckless instinct that is needed to become a legendary war hero. It's innate.

he was terrible as Augustus in I, Claudius however. maybe it's just I have a specific image of what I imagine Augustus to have been like and loud and boisterous isn't one of them
but I agree he's fantastic in everything else

Not citing Depp is a crime. The barbossa actor and him carry that movie hard

2067 is a sleeper hit, to me. Got dogged on all the review sites, probably because of Kwanten - but the soundtrack just dials it up to 11. Kristen Axelholm and Kenneth Lampl knock it out of the park.

This quote is ass because Don is literally lying here, he is a petty bitch and he fucked that guy over deliberately because of jealousy.

Probably because you watched Rome first. Augustus was generally regarded as a badass and not some fruity twink, he was the actual founder of the empire and not Caesar.

Dude, Hector goes out like a bitch. Achilles literally chases him around because Hector doesn't want to die.

The Greeks had several insults for fags. The degeneracy of the upper classes all over today is an easy comparison.
