People were constantly fanning themselves, fainting, and passing out. This is on top of the film being made in less than a decade after the bombs nuked them, and the country routinely had shortages in material and some foods during the occupation. One such example is the Godzilla costume in that very image, which had to be made from ready-mixed concrete instead of your typical costume-making materials. Rubber was very expensive at the time, and they sparingly reapplied it when the skin broke from the actor's movement. Shit's fascinating.
