Here's a better question.The introduction to Prometheus shows several Engineers engaged in some kind of ceremonial "seeding of life" event on an Earth that appears to be more primordial. One can assume that Ridley Scott and the writers room that wrote the script for Prometheus are intellectual dimwits without the slightest understanding of geological time.This might be a long post, but it is necessary.Let's begin with what we understand as the origins of life on Earth. Billions of years ago, approximately 2.5-3 billion years ago, after Earth formed in the early solar system, the moon formed likely from a collision event with another large planetoid, and the Earth cooled down enough such that the surface wasn't molten, and oceans began to form as comet ice was deposited on the surface, in the oceans various chemical processes led to the formation of the first simple single celled life forms. Life would remain very simple and non-complex for billions of years, over time the life did evolve slightly, into the first bacteria and algaes which would have created the oxygen in the atmosphere and deposited banded iron formations globally from the oxygenation events oxidizing iron in the ocean and depositing it on the seafloor. We have a lot of evidence of banded iron formations around the world from this time. Stromatolites also soon appeared, these are concretions of sedimentation from cyanobacteria mats that we can still find today on Earth in places such as Shark Bay, Australia. We have evidence of stromatolites that are billions of years old, showing that life did exist on Earth billions of years ago. However, it wasn't until around 600 million years ago that life began to change. Multicellular lifeforms began to appear in the Ediacaran, known as the Ediacaran fauna. These were the first multicellular life forms on Earth, and were sessile, tubular organisms. For millions of years life was like this, until the Cambrian era.

This was around 540 million years ago. So, in Prometheus, again it is shown that the Engineers at some unknown time were seeding life on Earth using the black goo to basically ritually sacrifice an engineer into his primary organic structures into the ocean, his body essentially being the building blocks that formed life on Earth. This is explicitly shown in the movie, Ridley wants us to believe that the engineers are the source of life on Earth and the ritual and decomposition of his body in the primordial Earth led to the formation of the first DNA and multicellular life. They show dividing cells, DNA double helixes forming, etc. So, to get back to why the writers of this movie are such hacks, they are implying that the Engineers have been around for BILLIONS of years! Even if we're generous and say that this event with the Engineers took place in the Cambrian, that was still 540 million years ago! 540!
Ok, now this is where this movie gets even more fucking stupid. Shaw discovered the petroglyphs in the cave, showing the Engineers came back to Earth eventually, hundreds of millions of years later, and met with primitive humans, showing them where they came from, which is how Shaw and company learn about the place to search for their "creators" that ends up being the planet they travel to in the movie. So, somehow, the Engineers remembered Earth and decided to just show up to it over 540+ million years later (billions if we're talking about the origin of life on Earth being that event)? They jump started an evolutionary process that didn't even see humans form until just over 1 MILLION years before present? So the Engineers plan was for the Earth to go through five mass extinction events which killed off almost all life on Earth over hundreds of millions of years before something that looked like them, hominids, evolved from earlier primates that just happened to evolve from earlier ancestors around 24 million years ago? Make any of this make sense. The Engineers planned on all the previous dominant life forms on Earth to go extinct and eventually lead to humans? It just makes no fucking sense. Nothing in this movie makes any goddamn sense. Ah yes, the engineers were so desperate to check up on their science experiment on Earth from 540+ million years ago a couple of thousand of years ago to find some primitive retard apes that somehow evolved from other life after 5 mass extinctions over the last 500 million years, and it just so happens that the Engineers evolution was completely stagnant in that time and they appear with the exact same physiology in the past as they do in the present with the black goo ones at the research station on that moon.
