This movie is a masterpiece and it's shocking how clever and modern it remains 74 years later. The number Gene Kelly performs with Cyd Charisse was one of the most beautiful things I've seen put to film. And the whole movie looks so good and vibrant, not "vibrant" like nowadays where they use a lot of color but it just looks like a kindergarteners' crayon drawing. I don't understand why they don't use technicolor anymore even if just for the novelty of it. Asking anons to recommend me any other movies from around that time period, don't need to be musicals. I was thinking of watching The Sound of Music next.
>>214692662>I don't understand why they don't use technicolor anymore even if just for the novelty of itThe process used 3 strips of black and white film, and the camera was as big as a fridge.I don't think you can even get black and white film anymore. I know black and white films even in the 1990s were shot on color film stock.
>>214692773That's a shame, but then again, nothing movie studios do nowadays seems effecient or "frugal" for that matter. But I guess it would be a small minority of people who would be interested in watching something using technicolor. Makes it all the more impressive the shots they pulled off considering the size and weight of the cameras though.
>>214692662>I don't understand why they don't use technicolor anymoreBecause there aren't any companies that make required materials and equipment and there isn't infrastructure to process and edit such movies. Everything went digital, every company that did it went bankrupt and closed down, people who knew how to do it retired and died. See The Love Witch and read the director's blog. She made that movie like 10 years ago and went out of her way to do it on film in technicolor and faced years of difficulties.
>>214692773>the camera was as big as a fridgeDon't forget that it required absolutely MASSIVE amount of light. The lighting setup was so big and got so hot that it literally melted make-up on the actress' faces after 5 minutes of shooting.
>>214693019I agree. The other thing that made Technicolor difficult was the massive amount of light it took with very hot carbon arc lights. Lighting was a real art form on classic Hollywood films. Filmstocks in those days were slower anyway, but the Technicolor process further reduced the amount of light reaching the negative. If you enjoy the look of Technicolor, you should check out some of the blurays Warner Archive are putting out. They can digitally realign the b&w negatives to get a perfect Technicolor image. They're working through the classic MGM and WB backcatalog and putting out Technicolor restorations every month or so.
>>214692662>Asking anons to recommend me any other movies from around that time period, don't need to be musicals.I rather like The Yearling (1946). It's just wholesome, earnest and sincere, and the cinematography is gorgeous. https://youtu.be/6Xks5GobEHw?feature=shared
Technicolor wasn't that big except it was noisy and had a big case for soundproofing. You could get around it now if you wanted to with dubbing which is way easier and more precise than it used to be. The development pipeline is a different beast though, probably lost tech.
>>214694955Will be watching this one tonight anon, thanks for the rec.>>214694446>If you enjoy the look of Technicolor, you should check out some of the blurays Warner Archive are putting out. Gene Kelly is one of the most talented men ever to live. Singing, dancing, acting, writing , directing. He just did it all and at the highest level.
>>214692662I think it's retarded
>>214695291Check out this fully blimped Dynoptic Technicolor rig for "Money from Home". See Jerry Lewis with a handheld cinecamera for scale.Dynoptic Technicolor was a 3-D process only used on 2 films: "Money from Home" and "Flight to Tangier". It was a dual-camera Technicolor rig, shooting 3 strip Technicolor in both cameras. That means it's photographingg every second of footage on six reels of film simultaneously. Unbelievably expensive. Money from Home is currently undergoing a full restoration in Technicolor and 3D, expected to be released some time next year.

>>214692662I like it but I wish the whole movie was in the style of Broadway Melody. The best sequence in the movie.
>>214692662Yeah it's really good.>I was thinking of watching The Sound of Music next. Most musicals are shit, it will pale in comparison to SitR.>I don't understand why they don't use technicolor anymoreAnything technicolor could do can be achieved with digital software, they just have to put the work in in post, instead of outsourcing it to pajeets.
I like the Doug Sirk / Rock Hudson movies, although I think Magnificent Obsession is the only one shot in true Technicolor.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mk10gqsonlgAll that Heaven Allows and Written on the Wind I think I like better. Colour looks incredible in these too. Somehow Rock Hudson always has better chemistry with his female leads than most of his heterosexual contemporaries.
>>214697626check out The Band Wagon 1953
>>214692662lovable movie. One of the last movie I've watched with my grandma before her passing last year. Gene Kelly was too precious for this world
>>214697626This was, in fact, the best part of the movie. Anyone have a webm of the scarf flowing in the air part?
>>214694319Kino
Heart of Stone (1950) The first colour film made in the DDR (East Germany), so no decadent capitalistic Technicolor, but a superior Soviet equivalent.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IxKz4737woghttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IxKz4737wogI was stunned by how incredible this looked.
>>214697751>Most musicals are shit, it will pale in comparison to SitR.I watched the first 10 minutes before being interrupted. The opening sequence was stunningly beautiful, do the other parts of the movie not hold up?
Insanely overrated. There's some great single scenes, like when he's singing in the rain, but the story and characters are lame.
>>214699126I can see how someone would think this and it's acceptable, but the highs are so high and besides, it's just so consistently heart warming and enjoyable. Maybe it's in part to me being a zoomer but I don't see movies that made me feel how SiTR made me feel very often.
>>214696844Yea this shit be lookin gay af lmao miss me with that fruity shit
>>214692662>I was thinking of watching The Sound of Music nextThe 4K is out at the end of the month, it should be a looker if they used the 60th anniversary 8k scan.
I wish I could live in a Hitchcock movie.
