Such a bad year for movies so far.
I've only watched Nobody 2 and wanted to like it but couldn't.
Ranking what I’ve seen so far1. F12. Lilo and stitch 3. Mission impossible 4. Jurassic5. Superman Only 1-2 weren’t massive piles of shit
>>214703249I haven't watched a new movie since 10 years at least. Completely dead medium
Avatar 3 and Zootopia 2 will knock down demon slayer
>>214703289F1 was mediocre but yeah it's probably the best out of the shit this year.
>>214703249F1 and mission impossible were so fucking bad. After Top Gun and Fallout were so good. Cursed year
>>214703289For me it's1. Superman2. F43. Jurassicwould've been a total washout without james gunn
>>214703289>3. MIFuck no. Even Rebirth was better than that shite
>Only one American flick made over a billion Pre-covid the top ten highest grossing movies all easily broke a billion dollars and that was before the huge inflation surge. Seems like cinemas are gradually weakening since nobody wants to pay $20 to watch some AI boardroom slop
>>214703390Ya it was pretty mid by any standard but it was at least very competently made
I really dont understand how MI was so fucking bad. I might even put III above it. And why was it 3 fucking hours long? There was nothing in the movie to justify that
>>214703513Rebirth is one of the worst blockbusters I’ve ever seen
Thought Splitsville, Materialists, and Weapons were all in the 8 to 7.5/10 range. I guess Dakota Johnson fans like me had a good summer.
>>214703536The west has fallen
>>214703249I think the past 20 years have been pretty bad for cinema. But this year ranks as one of the worst ones yet. Maybe the end of the year Oscar-bait salvages it all. A few movies have good buzz coming out of the film festivals, so who knows. As it stands, the 2020s are right on par with the 2010s, 1950s, 1940s as the most mediocre decades in cinema.
>>214704779Avatar 3 will save us
>>214703427What a terrible taste.
Eden is absolutely great
>>214703249It's awards season, so I expect we'll get some 6/10's now.I saw a trailer for some new HBO show called Task. All I could think was "why is this a show" and "I'd watch this if it were a movie".
>>214703249>year so bad an anime film gets in the 10 biggest box officeslmao LMAO
>>214704779We had Weapons and some other stuff. But every year, even the worst, usually has some passable genre films. The awards bait trailers don't look great, but they don't look awful. But that's kind of the high watermark now>It's okayI kept thinking it might turn around, but I think it's clear the "peak" of the medium was 1999. Too many other competing formats now.
>>214703249Gonna have to disagree, the Minecraft movie was pretty great.
>>214704904Demon slayer > fantastic 4
>>214704951For me, the "peak" of this last era was sometime around 1997 - 2002. It's really hard to pinpoint but 1999 is a good pick. As has been noted by many, the real peak for cinema was 1939 then the World War torpedoed everything and the resurgence didn't start until the mid-1950s when music, TV, movies and most every art gets caught in a tidal wave that doesn't peak until around 1976 and then it all plateaus until the eventual collapse in the early 2000s. Just looking back, every year starting in the mid-70s was nothing but kino up until this century.
Lol who tf watched that dragon movie
>>214703289Caught stealing was fun
>>214704904Don't worry, Zootopia 2 and Avatar 3 will knock it off the spot
>>214703249F1 was kinoMinecraft was funRest sucked Mitfr was unwatchableSupermanlet was boring Rest I haven't seen
>>214705577If you think F1 was kino then i implore you to watch Gran Turismo. Youd think thats the best movie ever made
>>214705511It's sad. The 80's were considered a "down" year when the industry was focused on youth-centric films to make big box office returns and were more risk averse. But if you pick any random year from 1980 to 1985 and stack it against 2020-2025 it's shocking the quality disparity.
best movie of the year
>>214705600In the 80s you didnt have to be with a big studio to make theatrical movies. Only the studios were making slop
>>214705594I love both
>>214705685F1 was mid. Gran Turismo was so much better.
>>214703249I feel like there hasn't been a good movie in like a decade
>>214705739Avatar 2 ?
For me it was Kpop Demon Hunters, that's my movie of the year. Not by any objective metrics, I just know if I've watched a movie 15 times in 3 months it must be good.
>>214705739There's been plenty of good movies. I think what's missing, and what we got a lot of in the 70's through to the 90's is a movie that hits three boxes1. Not good, but great. In the conversation for an all timer2. Pushes craft limits in some way. Improves on what has come before3. Isn't just a financial success, but seems to have cultural impactIt could be that the medium itself just isn't in the same position it once was.
>>214705786K-slop
>>214705808I don't watch K-anything so idk what all the tropes are like but the music was catchy, the girls didn't have any western guuurl power girl boss shit, and the moral lessons were also good. I didn't feel any heavy handed political messaging which is honestly such a breath of fresh air.
>>214705785avatar 1 wasn't a good movie, why would I see avatar 2?>>214705802>There's been plenty of good movies.like what?
>>214705852I don't know. Barbarian. Uncut Gems. Stuff that lands in the 3 out of 4 bucket. It's the lack of consistent 4 star kinos that is the problem. These good movies are meant to be the filler between great movies. Now they are the benchmark and 1 and 2 star slop is the filler (rather than the rare misfire). To me it doesn't feel like Hollywood fell off a cliff. It's like watching a sportsball player just get progressively worse each season yet he still has a contract because every couple of games he shows up and performs to the adequate necessary level. It's sad, rather than shocking.
>>214705934>Barbarian. never heard of it>Uncut Gems.it was ok, it was also 6 years ago
>>214703536>DEI slop vs giving the audience what they wantWhat a mystery
>>214703271I liked the first one up until the final action scene where it went full campy avengers team up marvelslop and that alone has kept me from ever wanting to see any sequel.
>>214705852Avatar 2 is better
>>214705851> breath of fresh air.Gay
Ne zha 2 peak!
Bump
>>214703249F1 and Superman were both good.
>>214703249>soulless shitty remake gets a billionI really hope people only watched this to spite Snow White
>>214703249>>214703271>>214703289>>214703293>>214703427Naked Gun 2025 was peak kino
>>214706071barbarian is great
>>214703249Caught Stealing, Megan 2, Weapons, and Bring Her Back are kino.
>highest grossing >bad That's been the case for the last 20 years or so.>>214704779>1950s >mediocre lol what? That's literally one of the very best decades.
>>214703249A cultural wasteland. Chinese are still fond of a very old folklore mythic god. Americans get a meh update comic superhero like a listless pointless party
>>214703249Weapons is the best thing I've seen from 2025 and I'd only give it a B.
>>214703249You're not joking. Almost exclysively kids movie.
>>214708145Sinners, 28 Years Later, Warfare, and Bring Her Back are in the same tier but lower.
>>214708130I don't think I've met anyone who would rank the 1950s over either the 1920s, 1930s, 1960s, 1970s, 1980s or 1990s. One great movie every other year does not make a good cinema decade. That's basically what we have now, one great movie every other year, lots of average and forgettable movies in between with masterworks far and few between. What year in the 1950s would you consider great and what films are good enough to push that decade into discussion with the other decades widely considered as the best years?
no love for "Drop"? It was a tight little suspense flick. although it got too Die Hard at the end.

TOTALHOLLYWOODDEATH
>>214708033Trvke
>>214709127GoodLess remakes
>>214707867Ne zha 2 is better
>>214708816I would consider more than 5 of those masterpieces, but if you were to rank all the years of cinema starting in 1910 - 1957 would just around break into the top 40, maybe top 30. So it's just above average in relation to other years. Still, 1957 mogs the last 20 years except for 2007.
>>214704264Hear me out. Dead Reckoning and The Final Reckoning could have been one movie if they took out all the worthless exposition scenes and dialgoue about THE ENTITY, it controls the truth, it controls cyberspace, we can't beat it... ad nauseum. Delete every reference to the Entity and give me a human antagonist instead like the best MI movies. The Entity wasn't a compelling villain and all the Noun Villains are poorly written: the Syndicate, The Entity, the Rabbit’s Foot, the Acolytes (remember how the Entity had its own doomsday cult full of British people menacingly chanting?)
Pretty terrible. What I've enjoyed so far:1. Weapons2. 28 Years Later3. Eddington 4. Superman
>>214703249>F1 is the only original movie Brutal
>>214709570It's an original movie in the same way that Barbie was. A new story based on an established product. It's a product placement movie. Minecraft would be similar, but the game has a half-assed story and mythology they adapted to the big screen and expanded on.It's grim, regardless.
>>214703289>F1It was at least 40 minutes too long. Out of racing movies I liked Ford vs Ferrari and Rush more.
>>214705636After Beu is a Afraid I'm staying far away from Ari Aster.
>>214703249I've felt like going to the cinema for over a year but there's been nothing actually worth seeing. Grim.
>>214704865>Eden is absolutely greatIt's from 2024 and mid at best. Same goes for Life of Chuck and Relay, even though it got available on streaming this year.
