Why didn't The Thing just calmly explain that it's a lost alien that wanted to leave the planet without any trouble? It worked for E.T. the extra terrestrial.

>>214705696Modern audiences love to belive Macready was the thing at the end. Stupid theory in every way, Macready's perspective is the audience's window into the movie, if you believe he is the thing you are a prententious fil fag who like the smell of your own farts. I know that Macready seems to think Childs is the thing at the end by the way he smiled at him. I choose to believe that Childs is himself, and they both die paranoid that the other is the thing. If Childs was the thing he would have no reason to pretend to Macready, there is no escape from the doomed base at this point and no one to defend Macready. He is totally vulnerable, and if Childs was the thing he would attack.

>>214707680Both. >>214707751Yeah. Every cell is capable of feeling pain and can transmit that pain to other cells. It could probably "suppress" the pain by isolating the cells that are about to get fried. Or it could be capable of producing "dead cells".
https://youtu.be/IKDXNuqNDAw?si=1CTgEGsVX3NuZI59Never expected a review of The Thing from old Plague but it's in season and he gives a lot of good insight. Funny to think that the crew and even creators of the Thing didn't know how it functioned or worked. Also, the idea of the Thing viewing intelligence as just a resource instead of a goal like humans strive for is pretty terrifying.
>>214707795the thing is selfish and each part only thinks about its own survival. one can't bring itself to let itself die to cover for another, that's the whole reason the test works. and if the main body started killing blood cells as they came out a finger cut, the hand would think it's under attack and separate of its own will like norris's head when the body was on fire
>>214705801>Mac offers him a drink, Child’s takes it and drinks.>”we should prepare our own food and only eat out of cans”Mac laughs when Child’s willlingly takes the drink because that gives away the fact he’s a thing, no human would accept sharing a drink with someone else in fear of assimilation. Mac is living the paranoid human thought process and Childs clearly isn’t anymore otherwise he’d never take that sip. It echos the opening when Mac pours his drink into the chess machine after getting checkmated, sharing a drink as a last ditch effort against an adversary who has already won.
>>214707187Starman is a fine movie for it's time. I wanna know how my favorite director of all time (The THing, Big Trouble, Mouth of Madness) made the WORST fucking movie of all time (Ghost of Mars) - it's not Ice CUbe, he can't act but he's never ruined other movies
>>214708178he was just really thirsty
>>214706957It’s a perfect imitation, seemingly memories intact and all, so it would be able to tell the taste of something. The fact Childs is willing to share food with Mac at all is the tell the Child’s is infected, otherwise Childs wouldn’t dare take that sip from a potential thing.
>>214708178good point but at that point they were both dead men (or a dead man and a thing) walking - they would freeze to death once the fires died down and Mac knew it. No sense worrying about infection then.
Childs is the thing. The film literally shows you the bath the thing takes as it comes up from the generator room to where childs was falling asleep at his post earlier. There's no reason for that shot otherwise and it's a pretty involved one. Look at the parallels between the shots at 1:26:40 and 1:29:20. Carpenter has been trolling idiots by saying it's supposed to be ambiguous when he actually spells it out for you.

>>214708374
>>214706873>but has no intelligence or creative spark of its own, which is why it tried to turn a helicopter into a spaceshipThis ruins the just a parasite theory, it is smart enough to buil a spaceship.
>>214708270People literally kill themselves rather than find out what being infected is like in the movie, are you trapped in there forever conscious but no longer in control? Is it painful maybe even painful forever to be assimilated? It’s a horrifying thought. If Child’s was human he’d be cautious of Mac and any drink or food he’d offered no matter how hopeless things are. If Child’s is a thing he’d only be trying to “act human” and sharing a drink is a normal human thing that would appear to be the right human move to do. However if Childs was actually frightened and paranoid the way Mac is, he wouldn’t take that drink. The Thing can imitate humans perfectly but it wouldn’t actually be afraid the way Mac is, that part would be an act that it can fail.
>>214708397but you can't build a spaceship from a helicopter, and a smart alien would realize thatit's just using bits and pieces of knowledge it gained, like a kid playing with dad's tools
>>214708335They also see "Childs" walking out of the base after it's established that his post is empty and the door was left open. You don't leave doors open up there, especially if it's where you're guarding.

>>214708425Maybe you can? It’s an advanced alien species that likely has already assimilated lots of advanced species and has the stored knowledge of entire planets of sentient beings with all their smartest minds collective knowledge combined. it might know how to do all sorts of advanced science and potentially only needs some basic things to do so. You can make a lightbulb from a potato and some metal wires fairly easily, go back in time and show someone thing and it’s literal advanced magic pulled from nearly nothing. The thing might know how to change the molecular compound of things with a simple process we have yet to discover, it’s completely unknowable however in the films logic it appears the thing was infact capable of building a spaceship from scraps.
Also Carpenter confirmed on twitter that one of them was the thing.
>>214708479no Childs, Mac, narls and old white dude head out to blairs shack in this cut after Mac talks to CHilds next to the window and find the tunnel to the space ship and blow it up.>I don't remember what cut this was called, had it since 2010.

In Starlog and Fangoria magazines for the time that covered horror and sci fi and FX praised the living fuck out of the movie.Boxoffice wise, it was a slow psychological burn that hit a little too close to home for older people / WaterGate era. It wasn't markeded well and had a SHITTY at the time movie byline:Man is the warmest Place to Hidethat they changed to The Ultimate in Alien Terror which turned other fans away thinking there would be a lot of alien battles and attacks.I can't pinpoint when during the theater run they changed it but I remember being a child when it came out and asking my father what the byline meant. He was a crazy man that took me to horror films like Alien and Amityville Horror in theaters when I was WAY too young for them.

>>214708504My turn.
>>214708512if it had the power to transmute metal or alter physics at such a fundamental level, why would it behave like it does? okay the move is not HARD sci-fi but I'm sure in Thing-iverse a helicopter made of aluminum, steel, rubber glass and plastic can't be turned into an interstellar ship, and any alien that could travel to earth would know this. the Thing is more like a disease than a fully sentient creatureyou know in Terminator when the Terminator is searching its memory bank for a pre-learned response? that's how I think the Thing operates. it assimilates knowledge and uses bits and pieces but it doesn't have feelings, hopes, dreams or anything like that for itself
The alternate ending would have been nice, the entire production debacle of them discarding the practical effects was a huge mistake.
>>214708750It has all the time in the universe and freezing doesn’t kill it. Legitimately there’s the possibility it enjoys playing with its victims and the whole movie it was in control and just messing around. It is entirely possible the thing is insanely intelligent and unbeatable physically and mentally and doesn’t care if it takes a billion years to unthaw as that’s nothing in its infinite lifespan. It’s such an unknowable alien creature, does it think at all or just a parasite mimicking extremely intelligent beings? Does each assimilated human think they’re human until the thing has to take over due to danger? Is it super smart with eons of civilization harvesting knowledge? Did it build the first ship or simply assimilate its crew? Is it a hive mind all acting as one or is it reproducing more and more beings with all of the knowledge and abilities of every being its assimilator had already gathered? Not being able to fully comprehend or get in the head of the thing is part of what makes the movie great but at the end of the day fact is it’s intelligence might be beyond all comprehension, we do not know.
>>214708840Wait! Im not the thing, I think Im Hitler.
>>214708844I'm gonna get that thussy
>>214708622>>214708644
>>214708249>It’s a perfect imitation, seemingly memories intact and allYeah but is it? There's not really any clear rules. My other piece of evidence would be the scene where Wilford Brimley is trying to convince Russell to let him out while a noose is hanging there. Brimley is already converted, The Thing just doesn't have the cultural context to understand that a noose is used for hanging. Not to mention just that MacReady having a bottle of liquor still and his chuckle after Child's drinks it, like he knows something he doesn't.
>>214708841“Good sir you cannot take an apple of the earth and these metal triflings and create the light of a candle wick!”Again you can make a lightbulb from a potato and some wire but show someone a few hundred years ago and it’s literal impossible magic. You cannot know what kind of science the thing, with potentially infinite assimilated civilizations worth of knowledge can perform with simple objects. You’re making massive assumptions about how the thing operates, it absolutely may have its own thoughts and desires or it might be a mindless parasite imitating what appears to be sentient thoughts. We cannot know for sure do not assume anything about how it works. Fact is in the movie universe it attempts to build a spaceship which makes it seem very cunning and not mindless.
>>214708965anon are you talking about using potatoes to generate electricty? i had a potato-powered clock as a kid, but it used two of them to power a wristwatch sized LCD, basically. anyway you can use a potato to make a thin wire glow but that's as close to a 'lightbulb' as... a helicopter is to an intergalactic starship
