MASSIVE SPOILERS FOR HIT MOVIE WEAPONS

Is this the weakest villain to ever be in a horror film? And she knows like, 1.5 spells?
>>
>>214712751
The movie is extremely overrated. I like Barbarian. But the twist in this is just lame.
>>
>>214712766
>But the twist in this is just lame.
What twist?
>>
i mean she spends most of her time meditating and not studying. shed probably know more if she wasnt such a lazy bitch, didnt even help the kid to feed the weapons

>>
>>214712751
I had hoped for a little bit more to happen, maybe some demon that was puppeting her instead of this just being a little twig trick that she figured out and anyone can do it in 5sec like the kid
>>
>>214712751
I don't even mind her as the villain. The dumb writing near the end is what bothers me

She takes control of the Parents of kid and the kids 17 classmates. The FBI/Cops don't find teh kids father having a stoke suspicious. the kids mom has not been made available to the investigators which is another huge flag. Also 17 kids missing would be global news and viral on social media. That city/town would have been a media circus for months. Also parents don't hire private investigators or don't just form a group to take some kind of action on their own accord feels illogical

even the 'le best' horror movies have trouble fitting logic.
one example is when evil lurks.
it's a well-known fact in-universe that there is an apocalyptic demon possession problem, and yet for some reason, only a handful of people seem to give a shit about it.
>>
Fuck off, the strength of the movie is the shifting nonlinear focus on the towns people. Nobody gives a fuck about your need for a lore breakdown on a generic witch.

Imagine wanting a monologue by the witch explaining her powers, explaining her motives, explaining her backstory. Are you fucking kidding me?
Go back to /tg/ and roleplay your high school crush who you never spoke to, act out a tranny roleplay sesh with your other autistic Troon friends on discord. Nobody wants to hear your shit ideas.

This was incredibly disappointing. How the fuck is it rated so highly?
>next to zero questioning and followup about the only kid that remains
>zero surprise visits by officers to the house
>the parents not talking to any friends/family/work for weeks goes completely unnoticed
>no detectives even considered triangulating the directions they ran to
>main chick falls asleep on a stakeout without even locking her doors?
>the witch has her hair, but instead of creating another puppet, she sicks the gay asian on her
>the giant fucking AR just floating in the air for some reason
There are so many blatant holes and horrible decisions in this dogshit writing that even listing them is exhausting.
>>
>>214713635
>>the witch has her hair, but instead of creating another puppet, she sicks the gay asian on her
She could literally have made her sudoku and make everyone believe she was responsible or at least make her go missing which would still put suspicions on her
>>
>>214713635
>How the fuck is it rated so highly?
The same reason any of the Dexter spinoffs are rated highly (who does the rating?)
>>

There’s no tweest.
>>214712751
I liked it but I can see why my buddy thought it was bad. There’s not a lot going on really. It’s just filmed in a competent way with a style that makes you think of something like Prisoners, together with the intercut POV narrative you normally find in a crime or mystery movie.

Here that is really just window dressing for a very basic villain who kinda gets punked.

The “seriousness” angle helps sell key scenes like the parents stabbing themselves in what would be a laugh riot scene if handled badly (think Sam Raimi horror comedy).

I’ll take this opportunity to remind people of Warlock if you like witch movies. It’s low budget but fun and uses some ancient superstition to good effect. Also time travel plot.
>>
>>214713556
the guy who invented the modern clown based it on representations of demons from Indonesia. and there's a theory that these demons and other monsters, who are eerily similar in design around the world, were originally once the Nephilim.

How did the canine unit not track the kids to that house? And its really convenient that NONE of the houses on Alex street had RING cameras to capture the 17 kids that ran to his house
>>
>>214714370
Because it isn't good and people are expecting it to be good when they watch it because of the ratings. Why they believed those ratings is a good question.
>>
>>214713635
>police dogs could not pick up the scents of any of the 20 kids missing
>after someone calls into the station saying they know the location of some of the kids, a cop on duty goes missing and nothing is followed up on
>>
So there was no witch and that Alex kid was just a school shooter right?
>>

but they did visit the house and concluded everything is in order

>>
>>214713635
>the giant fucking AR just floating in the air for some reason
How else would you know it's a movie about how bad the 2nd amendment is? We need to give up our gun rights, for the children.
>>
>>214712876
For me its that no other houses doorbell cameras capture the kids running to the house and this wouldn't even be an issue if Ring cameras were not a major plot point of the film.
The idea that the kids ran out into the darkness and just vanished was spooky as shit but then you show they just ran down the road to the 1 kids house in a neighborhood lined with other big houses who all apparently dont have doorbell cameras. Completely ruined the suspense and immersion for me.
>>
>>214714783
yeah they could've easily shown her put a spell on the investigating cops or whatever.
>>
>>214714793
Also the house happens to be the kid of the only non missing kid, that was just super retarded writing
>>
>>214712766
This shit had a twist?
>>
>>214714793
>they just ran down the road to the 1 kids house
Also, at the end of the movie you see them coming Alex' house by following the street. So the triangulation plotpoint also doesn't make sense, they weren't going in a straight line to the house.

Still liked the flick though, even with these sloppy points.

Movie asked for quite a lot of leeway in rationale and consistency but it still managed to grip me.
On the last confrontation i was rooting for the little nigga like i haven't rooted for a protagonist on a movie on a while. I thought he would destroy the tree and that would break the spell but he actually remembering what the witch did and reversing it was super satisfying too.

she shows 1 spell, the most straightforward in effect
all the much more complicated compound actions just happen without any explanation
she can't issue voice commands because why would she need the stupid ritual if she could just do that
but somehow she can tell the kids to go in the woods
she can tell the mother to go sneak into the car and steal some hair from whoever might be inside
she can tell the cop to get whoever is in the cop car and bring him back

think about it anons
>director was a friend of trevor moore, who was an alcoholic
>the witch represents alcohol, who is not taken seriously by the people she corrupts and thought to only stay with them a short time(à la "its only 1 beer/glass/etc")
>the child of the alcoholic parents has to take care of the house and the chores, hence him having to buy food, cook, feed his parents, etc
>the absolutely obvious plotpoint of substance abuse by telling us the teacher had a previous dui and buying a shitton of alcohol at the store
>the junkies entire plot line
>the fag couple letting the witch(alcohol) into the house and the household immediatly gets destroyed by her(the asian throwing up black sludge is reminicient of throwing up after drinking too much)
>the kids still not being okay way after the movie is an allegory for the long lasting effects alcoholic households can have on their children
>the teacher and the cop fucking up their relationships by meeting at a bar and drinking together
>spells being (((concocted))) by throwing stuff into (((liquid))) aka alcohol
i thought it was an allegory for guns at first as well, but then a friend told me its about alcohol, and it immediatly started making sense to me

I have a few different ideas of what it might be there for, but I don’t have the right answer. I like the idea that everyone is probably going to have their own kind of interaction or their own relationship with that scene, whether they don’t give a s*** about it and it’s boring, or whether they think it’s some sort of political statement, or whether they think it’s just cool. I don’t really care. It’s not up to me. I just like that it’s there.
>Or is it? Cregger actually says no. I co-host a horror podcast, and in our interview with the film-maker, he unequivocally said he was not thinking of school shootings when he wrote the movie. For him, that’s not at all what it’s about. (Though he did stress that he welcomes people’s interpretations, and in fact wanted to make something with that kind of flexibility.) He wouldn’t say precisely how he personally interprets the story, but he has mentioned repeatedly that it was something he started writing out of – hey! – grief, even if the movie itself may be more ambiguous as to its thematic aims
>>
For me it wasn't the logical inconsistencies, it's just a bad horror movie
>only jumpscares are in nightmares
>setting is boring suburbia
>ending is comedic
A24 atmospheric horror is far better
>>
>>214716910
wtf am I reading is this guy permanently drunk?
>>
>>214716259
There are 2 modes shown:
Mind control and mind sharing
Happened to the kids, parents, cop, and druggie
Can give somewhat complex orders and is permanent. When the witch died they stayed brain dead. When the junkie broke in the witch instructed the parents to attack him without ever having actually seen him. Requires an item from the target.

Attack command
Just makes the user attack one target. Brolin snapped out after the witch died so it's temporary, but the principal was still hypnotized after killing his husband and being ordered to stand down with the water.

>>214716521
The gun and other jump scare nightmares at the start are there to make the viewer think this movie is deeper than it is. It builds up tension for the reverse twist when the genre changes to comedy

>>214716809

Anon is mixed up. Creggers dad died of alcoholism, the old lady being gross scenes are inspired by that. The film is thematically about loss - the sudden disappearance of the kids mirrors trevors sudden death and absence in zacks life

god she was so sexy in the movie as a teacher, i wish there was fanart and fanfiction of her having a sexual relationship with her students. 8 year old me would have a boner in her every class

It's a fun enough little movie and the dialogue and acting are good but it covers up a lot of plot holes.
It's fine if you just enjoy the show and don't think about it.

the movie is ABOUT how people are incompetent.

the crimes being investigated badly is part of the point of the movie. everyone in the movie has parasitic qualities, deficient qualities, everyone also has empathizable qualities, human qualities.

the movie doesn't make it explicitly clear that the humans incompetence is because of the magic because maybe its not.

its more saying that peoples incompetence, their hubris, might as well be magic, might as well be a supernatural evil.

and that their human side might as well be a supernatural good.

And there is a battle between good vs evil going on. through peoples actions.

maybe because that town had people already corrupt, already incompetent, already evil, thats why the witch chose to go there and thrived there?

It was aight. I would cut the scene at Marcus' house entirely. Totally pointless and explains the entire movie by the half point. Although the movie still have tons of holes in it. Still, letting the kids tear the witch to pieces was satisfying. 6/10 at best for me though.

You're right, true kino enjoyers only care about the plot beats. Presentation, cinematography, character work and creativity are all a waste of time

>>
>>214719410
>Presentation, cinematography, character work and creativity are all a waste of time
They are when bundled with bad writing
>>
>>214719410

>presentation
The structure is annoying and there's no good music

>cinematography
It's fine

>character work
They didn't develop any of the characters. The cop is flawed but never learns anything, the teacher is a drunk slut who cares about the kids the entire time, the principal is dumb and dies, Alex is sad and lonely, and Josh Brolin's development happens all in one scene ("I'm sad you're gone I should have told you I love you"). No one has to grapple with bigger issues or face their flaws.

>creativity
It's not that creative and it peters out into nothing. The premise leans heavily into "it's a metaphor" shit because the underlying plot and storytelling aren't that compelling.

what a retarded comment. horror movies make everyone scary. toys in chucky. children in the omen. old man dracula. little girls with long hair in japanese movies. the genre is literally about the capacity of anyone and anything to induce horror

witches are scary because there's something unsettling about the wisdom of some elderly lady being corrupted, just like it's unsettling when the innocence of a child is corrupted

no race is scary though. at least not compared to a real monster, even hp lovecraft understood this, dislike and disgust is not deep enough

I guess voodoo stuff is the closest you can get but not sure if there's been any really good movies in that world. resident evil 5 probably gets closest but even that isn't the scariest re game

I liked her, she was creepy as hell and believable as a shitty witch that manages to slip by unnoticed because of her doddering jewish aunt persona and people not being aware of magic.
Also incredibly funny when it all blows up in her face.

So like are the kids and the parents gonna be braindead forever? And why did it say in the opening that "the case was buried because no one solved it"? Like they have 17 kids lynch a granny, shit ton of witnesses that the witch shit was real, shit ton of bodies like the homo couple, dead cop, dead druggie, etc.

>The structure is annoying and there's no good music
wrong, the structure is a fun change compared to most run of the mill horror movies, and the music wasn't particularly memorable but it wasn't noticeably bad either
>It's fine
it had some pretty cool shots, but nothing short of a genre-defining masterpiece gets praised for cinematography these days so it's kind of pointless to even discuss it
>They didn't develop any of the characters. The cop is flawed but never learns anything, the teacher is a drunk slut who cares about the kids the entire time, the principal is dumb and dies, Alex is sad and lonely, and Josh Brolin's development happens all in one scene ("I'm sad you're gone I should have told you I love you"). Who cares if people learn stuff? They present the characters and their flaws well. Horror movie characters who die aren't meant to have character arcs, they're meant to die. There are so few horror movies with the kind of character development you're talking about you could probably count them on one hand.
>It's not that creative and it peters out into nothing. The premise leans heavily into "it's a metaphor" shit because the underlying plot and storytelling aren't that compelling.
I didn't know or care about the metaphor shit and I still enjoyed it. It's not a masterpiece, but it's a fun movie and far better than 99% of horror schlock that gets released these days.
>>

explain, in detail, why the writing is bad. no ad homs
>>
>>214712751
So what's up with the finger pricks? The cop pricks his finger on the guy's needle, and the witch pricks her finger on the thorn. How do you interpret that if it's about school shootings or alcoholism? It doesn't have to mean anything, but I'd like it to.
>>
>>214721946
horror requires you to accept the concept to begin with, no horror works if you go "oooo scary demon child, how about I just kick you?"

just watch serial killer stuff based on real events if you can't suspend your belief. people doing a deal with evil and gaining access to dark powers is old as writing itself
>>

I actually really liked Barbarian but I still have no idea what the fuck they were trying to do with Justin Long's character. It felt like they were trying to draw a parallel between him and the rapist inbreeding psychopath who caused everything especially with the "I don't think I'm a bad person" speech he does near the end and trying to make him unlikable by loudly yelling faggot on screen (nevermind the fact that every dude on the planet has said that before). Shoving the mixed race chick I forgot the name of off the water tower is fucked, yes, but having regret sex with some chick who later alleges she was raped isn't even remotely comparable. If they revealed he really DID rape her, it would've made more sense.

I stopped watching as soon as they introduced a gay couple out of nowhere. The broccoli haired can I speak to your manager bitch playing the main female lead was bad enough but then they threw that shit in. I'm tired of this shit.
