The “seriousness” angle helps sell key scenes like the parents stabbing themselves in what would be a laugh riot scene if handled badly (think Sam Raimi horror comedy). I’ll take this opportunity to remind people of Warlock if you like witch movies. It’s low budget but fun and uses some ancient superstition to good effect. Also time travel plot.

There are so few horror movies with the kind of character development you're talking about you could probably count them on one hand.>It's not that creative and it peters out into nothing. The premise leans heavily into "it's a metaphor" shit because the underlying plot and storytelling aren't that compelling.I didn't know or care about the metaphor shit and I still enjoyed it. It's not a masterpiece, but it's a fun movie and far better than 99% of horror schlock that gets released these days.

Like all horror movies, you need to suspend your disbelief because people need to be retarded somewhat for it to work. The Thing is literally the ONLY horror flick where people are competent and it's insane that to this day, no one has topped it.

It felt like they were trying to draw a parallel between him and the rapist inbreeding psychopath who caused everything especially with the "I don't think I'm a bad person" speech he does near the end and trying to make him unlikable by loudly yelling faggot on screen (nevermind the fact that every dude on the planet has said that before). Shoving the mixed race chick I forgot the name of off the water tower is fucked, yes, but having regret sex with some chick who later alleges she was raped isn't even remotely comparable. If they revealed he really DID rape her, it would've made more sense.
