Is it the best time travel movie?
>>214727587I enjoyed this one. I don't think it's the best though I don't know what that would be. Certainly not "The Time Machine" with Guy Pierce wink wink.
Triangle is the best, dont watch the trailer or read anything else. Underrated kino.

There was that one really cool moment that's worthy of a big budget movie. I forget the rest of it. Also, the guy who made it immortalized himself just in time before he lost his amazing looks.

>>214730174Yeah nobody here has seen it. Which is funny cause this is where I discovered it years ago. Solid low budget time travel "thriller". Maybe no one cared cause it's Spanish or something.
I like the first half of Primer for reasons completely unrelated to the time travel plot. It's just really comfy. Something about a bunch of engineers bickering back and forth about how to build something while Shane's soundtrack plays in the background is really nice. I wonder if this is what it was like to be one of those small game development teams back in the 90s.
>>214727611>shitcrimesThis movie is not good. The only way it makes sense is if you decide that all main characters are so stupid that they’re bordering on a mental disorder. Here are my main complaints:-There are plenty of time traveling plots where the premise is that the main character time travels, makes mistakes that lead to bad outcomes, then tries while ironically failing to do something differently. Not this guy. He INTENTIONALLY does the terrible things for NO OTHER REASON than because he knows future him did them. (Ie: hmm I saw this lady naked and unconscious before I got here, and nobody else is here, guess I’d better sexually assault her to make sure it happens again!)-You get a huge gash in your forehead, do you decide to wrap a bandage around your ENTIRE FACE because of that? But how else can there be a creepy mysterious guy with a bandage around his entire face in the movie?-Woman stops to help a guy in a car crash, then decides to walk into the woods with a stranger for no reason. After being sexually assaulted by a man who crashed in a car on the side of the road, she immediately rushes to help another guy who also just crashed in a car on the side of the road.-The scientist just lets this idiot run the show and tell him how things are going to go. You’ve just majorly fucked up by using a time machine with negative consequences and a complete idiot is now telling you what to do. You just passively allow him to make these terrible decisions without getting involved at all?I thought it was lazy story telling, unbelievable characters, and a cliche plot that doesn’t even use the premise well. I have. I idea how it got the ratings that it did, other than that people prefer their time travel movies to be dumbed down.I will never understand why it gets posted alongside primer despite not being nearly as interesting and cerebral, just a fucking waste of time. There's only so much writing to be excused for the sake of the plot

>>214732476I'm kind of disappointed I missed out on this, although back then I probably didn't know who Shane was yet>>214732658What I never understood about this movie is that the main character knowingly fucks herself and should, in theory, have all of the information she needs to determine what happened like halfway through the movie, but it's presented as though the pieces of the puzzle only come together in a huge revelatory moment right at the end

>>214732658I don't know about specific plot hole in this onebut the story is ridiculous, it's for low IQ people, once they revealed she had a baby and becomes a man, any one with an above average IQ should be able to predict he will be all the characters of the movie

>>214732658The Fizzle bomber has newspaper clippings from alternate timelines suggesting he can change the future, other than that it would be a perfect closed loop
>>214737768>just Cole being a retard from the getgoThey state in the film a few times that time travel fucks with your head and you get confused to what is real and what isn't. Among the first lines in the film is Cole and Jose talking about how the volunteers don't come back to genpop and they're all crazy/locked up somewhere.>also why didnt jose blast the scientist at the end too?Jose wasn't there to stop the virus. The virus had already been released into the airport before Cole and the doctor saw the scientist and tried to stop him. Cole himself states earlier that if he finds a pure sample of the virus, then a scientist will be sent to analyse it in order to find a cure in the future. That's the lady who sits next to the scientist at the end and says she works "in insurance" (she's too old to have survived 30 years into the future to brief Cole when he first starts time travelling so it's clear they sent her back to study the virus). They were never travelling back in time to stop the virus from ever happening (they even talk to Cole about getting addicted to that dying world when he comes back and he's confused). I think it's the old destiny vs free will argument. Child Cole was always going to see his older self getting shot in the airport. Even if some events can be changed (like inspiring Brad Pitt's character with the 12 monkeys name or appearing in a WW1 photo), others (like the virus) can't be changed and will always happen. >how the fuck was cole also able to zip back into the future as well? The volunteers had trackers in their molars. They could be zapped back to the future. They do it to Cole when he's tied to the bed in the asylum, again after they fuck up and send him and Jose to WW1 and finally when he's in the river getting chased by police. They can't zap him back after he removes his teeth (just like the rambling stinky homeless guy mentions). Jose also asks him why he fucked around with his teeth since he had a pardon in the future.
>>214738156The lady who sits next to him at the end is the boss in the future
>>214738156so thats why jose didnt tell him who to shoot when he handed him the gun? idk maybe im missing something it looks like a lot of shit happened to get to that stranger ending. were they the biuggest retarded scientists sending an even bigger retard into the past? was it just a coincidence kid cole was there or did the scientists know?
>>214734367Any 4chan board.
>>214728895This film was amazing in Spanish, one of the few cult classics on the airwaves.
>>214738275Yes. The scientist who runs (or is running with the other scientists) the time travel program would be best suited to gather info on the pure virus once it has been found. The call made by Cole at the airport is how they know in the future that the 12 monkeys group isn't responsible and to focus on the virologist and his crazy son. >>214738285>so thats why jose didnt tell him who to shoot when he handed him the gun? I think so. He only manages to find things out because he's influenced by his dream/memory as a child. It acts as a sort of anchor. Because of that you could say he was destined to find out and then get shot. Cole was first chosen because he was disposable (antisocial behaviour etc) but had a good memory. The people in charge wouldn't have given a shit if his suit got punctured outside and he then died from the virus. They also didn't give a shit if he went crazy from time travelling at first. It's only when he finds some useful info that they start treating him nicely. He wakes up in a comfy bed with a big beautiful painting and music and he gets a pardon. At that point the scientists themselves say that he's the most qualified because of his achievements and start briefing him in detail (the names of the cities where the outbreak happened). Then there's also the detail of the book the doctor wrote. If she wrote it in the past then the scientists should have access to it in the future and see that the doctor interacted with one of their time travellers.
>>214737451Fuck you. What didn't you like?
>>214738571>It's only when he finds some useful info that they start treating him nicely. He wakes up in a comfy bed with a big beautiful painting and music and he gets a pardon. At that point the scientists themselves say that he's the most qualified because of his achievements and start briefing him in detail I think what frusterates me is the movie has a STRICT almost cruel rule of>nope everything youre seeing is part of this strict timeline and everything is fixed. ww1 transport? yea that was suppsoed to happen. 1990 and is interaction with Goines? uhhh yup, fixed. kid cole seeing everything happen, must be a hell of a fucking coincidence from the scientists POV bringing in this literal who thug, but hey fuck it, fixed!I guess it was the directors intention to fuck with us but idk, from the scientists POV I guess their behavior was fixed too? at what point does this get lazy I mean cmon
>>214727587It cant be the best when you need to watch diagrams and explanations on internet to fully understand what happens in the movie. And dont come telling me "filtered", cause the movie DOES NOT explain everything in it.
>>214738285>were they the biuggest retarded scientists sending an even bigger retard into the past? You have to take into account that the population was wiped off and they live like worms trying to prevent the virus from getting underground. I'm guess the scientists are they best they have on hand. Cole was disposable. Why risk wasting precious resources (the scientists) by sending them back in time (and maybe going insane afterwards) if there's a chance that they'll find nothing? They're already wasting food on antisocial fuckups, just send one of them.>was it just a coincidence kid cole was there or did the scientists know?I think they didn't know at the start but might have pieced it together after sending Cole back a few times and him slightly altering some aspects of the past. For example, they could have access to Cole's asylum medical records from the past and read about his dream or the book the doctor wrote.
>>214728304came to say 12 monkeys, focuses on people within the time travel story rather than get bogged down with paradoxes and heroes fixing events and all that shit
>>214738604Too drunk to spoiler right. [Spoiler]everything. Ugly main actress. Boring kill scenes. When the film starts she hugs rich guy and says Im sorry, implying she knows what is coming. But when they get on the boat she pretends to be oblivious and discovering thinga for the first time
>>214738689kinda hard to make things stick to this one rule of "the past cant be changed, everything is fixed". I guess theres 0 point in asking "why cole? why did the scientists fuck up twice in sending him to the wrong places? why waste time with cole and goines if the scientists knew he was going to tell goines about the monkeys?" looks cole had a predetermined role in this.it reminds me of The Leftovers where the director kind of makes a point where "shit just happens: the show" but we're supposed to believe the main character survives be buried alive with posion inside and and being shot multiple times as a case of a guy with some uncommonly strong constitution.
>>214734367Happy Death day is a good one.
>>214738821Dont watch the sequal
>>214738687I am here to tell you "filtered"I didn't get ALL of it but I got most of it first time 'round. I will admit to watching an explanation video after the fact but I didn't really get much of it, most of what was being "explained" was really just wild guessing at what happened off-screen. It's obvious in many cases that SOMETHING happened but impossible to say exactly what it was, which I think is intentional to add a mystery aspect to the movie. I think it's better that way, too.
>>214738816>why did the scientists fuck up twice in sending him to the wrong places?Cole states that the process hasn't been streamlined and things can go wrong. They also send Jose to WW1 by mistake. I've seen a theory that states the scientists were in on it and wanted to prevent Cole from stopping the virus. That's why she offers the virologist champagne on the plane at the end and the insurance line is referring to insuring that the virus gets released. I don't think it makes much sense. She's there as "insurance" in the sense that she either gets infected with a pure form of the virus and brings it to the future or talks to the virologist about it and brings that info to the future. Cole swallows a bug in order to try and bring it back to the future.
>>214739039That's fair, what I cant stand is people claiming they understood it all on their 1st viewing withut needing any other outside information.
>>214727995Carruth is never coming back. He hated working with a low budget, which is why he tried to get two huge projects financed. And despite Fincher's and Soderbergh's support, nobody wanted to produce them. He fucked up big time. He had a huge crash out on Twitter and he posted weird shit on Vimeo. He was also abusive with two of his girlfriends. It's absolutely over for him.
>>214739047I guess I just dont respect the directors rule of a fixed timeline. Zero reason to discuss the why's and hows. Feels like a classic directors narrative handwave rather than something interesting. I guess the point is us watching something inevitable unfolding before us in frustration? idk
>>214739137I guess it depends on how the director explores it in his film. There will always be paradoxes everywhere with these types of films. In one of the back to the future movies the main character travels back to get his parents back together. If his previous antics in the past led to his parents not meeting, how does he exist anymore?

Deliberate obfuscation and red herrings to "add mystery" in a narrative that's already nonlinear isn't a clever directorial decision, it's a cheap attempt to add additional depth that wasn't needed, at the cost of legibility.S;G has its own problems, but no one comfortable with their masculinity is gonna chimp out too hard at them. At least its narrative structure is unabashedly straightforward.
>>214740243There is some truth to it. >>214730932Part of its greatness is that it's just comes off as realistic what might happen if a couple of fags accidentally invent a time machine for real in many ways:>how they could invent something like that>how they would talk about it>investigate it>have to prove what they're saying to the other fag>come up with ideas at of how to use it>have personal motivations to use it, fuck the other guy over, build multiple machines and send those back, build the failsafe, etc.The way they would figure shit out logically and create multiple secret loops is a nice contrast to the usual movie thing with characters doing stupid illogical things just to keep the plot moving.I also like it because I can appreciate the low budget at the same time as watching it and I'm just as impressed by the production itself. Same thing with 'Cube' where you know the entire movie is being shot in one 'room' while still being involved in the story where it's supposed to be one of many in a vast 3D maze. I love that shit.'Upstream Color' is worth watching if you haven't seen it. It's a little harder to follow at first and has some odd elements, but has the same level of comfy where you're just watching fags playing their part. Would have liked to have seen 'A Topiary' and 'The Modern Ocean' for the same reason, such a pity.I don't even believe allegations from women at face value or media reports these days - especially in 2016 of all years.
