Wow I guess the Patriot Act really *is* justified in order to prevent terrorism. Thanks, Nolan!

>the Patriot Act really *is* justified in order to prevent terrorism
It is incredible that good people will defend a total surveillance state (depicted often in film) despite the many real world examples of oppressive regimes using it to take control.

name two and a half examples?

Common people are stupid and gullible and will always be exploited by the elite. We use to have systems in place to prevent this, but they have long since been supplanted.
It still amazes me how willing people are to be slaves. Simple platitudes like "absolute power corrupts absolutely" just go out one ear and into another.

They hamfistedly discuss Rome's suspension of democracy in one scene and how it's not necessarily a good idea in the long run and /tv/ is still too dense to get it.

I got kicked out of a leftist film group in college when I argued that the conceit of Nolan's Batman trilogy is that George Bush is Batman.

Well. yes? And in the dark fart rises the crime in gotham was fixed with the "dent laws". They were so effective that they transformed the city from a garbage dump and slums into an immaculate first world city.

I love all the post 9/11 anxiety that permeates throughout TDK. Fits well with the Joker being a war veteran theory.

Nothing to see here....move along.

Nolan's trilogy when you look back on it are very pro-rightwing authoritarian state, and no not in the retarded le based way.

Bane co-opting "occupy wall street" rhetoric sort of underlined to me how much Nolan disdained common peoples' concerns about oligarchy and how we would be better off with a rich vigilante to save us (but we don't deserve him!).

It's honestly why these movies have become more onerous to me over time, aside from the memes.
>>
Batman’s a vigilante there’s no way it wasn’t going to be right wing

Batman begins and the dark knight were every aspect of 9/11 chopped up and rearranged for the purpose of granting the catharsis we never got. The omniscient surveillance is used to isolate bad actors from innocents (it wasn’t) is dumped as soon as the threat is over (if wasn't), the joker doesn’t win (osama did) and the US gets to keep being a force of good in the world (it isn’t).
>>
>>214799369
Good point perhaps! I think Nolan goes further than your usual vigilante movie though, and he either doesn't understand the implications or he does and thinks it's a good thing.

>as long as the RIGHT TYPE of person has this power it's ok!
>the people fed up with government and business are stupid and misled! We need an enlightened rich guy and an army of police to protect us!

He's making Michael Winner's death wish trilogy look quaint by comparison (these are also better movies btw even if I think he overdoses the "Sissy libs don't wanna PUNISH criminals!!" angle).

I didn't notice the pro-fascism message until Dark Knight Rises.
>>
>>214799301
This is such a dumb reading. His Batman is depicted as a project and a psychological crutch for the character to eventually shed, and it explicitly causes more problems than it solves from one film to the next.
>>
>>214801998
The entire trilogy is that 'random maniacs hide behind ideology to justify destroying america because they hate us for being happy and having cities and creating and having wealth. Good salt-of-the-earth billionaires like Thomas Wayne make the world go round by building and carrying it like atlas, but some people don't understand that and kill him because they're low morality criminals. What we need, is a new style of hardline super-SWAT billionaire hero who has the clarity and power to cut through all red tape and perform acts of brutality, mass-surveillance, weapons development, international treaty breaking, and anything in their power to neutralize terrorist maniacs or else 9/11 will happen again and again and the cities will be nuked. Torture is completely justified. These anarchists and leftists think the people are just so stupid they'll turn on their heroes like that, but they don't understand that americans are good people who cherish their heroes, policemen, and military no matter how far they may 'temporarily' fall or what insane things they have to do to get the job done'
>>
>>214801966
Only if you actually believed all the bullshit coming from Fox News and ignored what was actually happening in the world.

Now, read as a fantasy of what “right wing” means, yeah, it fits pretty perfectly, complete with all the fantasy conclusions.
>>
>>214802005
Nah he's just a really self-loathing hero who's hard on himself because he really is such a good and troubled moral person, these enemy terrorists keep abusing that morality as a weakness by attacking and torturing him into states of shame and self-doubt, usually explicitly just to take him out of commission, humiliate the wealthy american class before the masses, and blow up a building
>>
>>214802158
Well yeah that's what I'm saying, it's republican in the sense it accords perfectly to the republican fantasy at the time
>>
>>214802177
You really aren't in a position to criticize it when you fail to grasp the most obvious points the films make over and over about the character and his motives and effects.
>>
>>214802265
the Batman identity in this trilogy is indeed a project, but he is shown as a necessary one, who is doing the right thing by working towards becoming the man Thomas Wayne was, but for the new era. Yes, Bane would not have had a bomb if Bruce hadn't made a long project of building a free-energy reactor for the good of the American people, but the free-energy reactor IS a rightfully philanthrophic project in the exact vein of Thomas Wayne's train system (which was also turned into a terror weapon by Scarecrow). At the end of the day, through all these trials and tribulations and failures, to do nothing and be terrified into refusing to go through these conflicts to do good for the world, is surrender against your enemies and giving up on your people. Batman did all these things in pursuit of achieving and rebuilding American excellence and the excellent American individual in himself, which he achieves.
And yeah the entire thing is a discrediting of the opposition claim 'i'm only here attacking you and being a terrorist because you dared to be you. We have to blow up your building because its a crime that you bothered to build anything let alone succeeded so wildly.' Consider the argument that the US deserved 9/11 for any reason - Nolan's trilogy goes out of its way to call that bullshit. 'Sorry for being the best guy with the biggest towers and biggest gun, I guess'
>>
>>214802265
No you see billionaires are only moving and shaking and acquiring wealth to deal with trauma and they’re totally good people who want just to do good in the world
>>
>>214802535
The real billionaire's dream is to give it all up and live just like us. But le sigh, evil never sleeps :/
>>
>>214802265
Things Batman/Bruce has done wrong
>try to become a soldier or warrior to protect his family and his city's people
>finds out his mentor is a terrorist and immediately kills him and his entire army to prevent a terrorist attack in his home city, but immediately swears off killing forever out of guilt
>is visible enough as an american hero that a psycho starts blowing things up and kills his girlfriend, tortures his friend into insanity, claiming Batman is responsible because it was done in retaliation for him acting too strong
>quit fighting for several years because he's depressed his girlfriend was murdered (his biggest downfall in the series - inaction)
>spend his time in recluse building a free power source for the nation that will revitalize the city, but was MANIPULATED by guilt and the executive corruption of others, into giving up TOTAL PRIVATE CONTROL of his company and one of the buyers turns out to be a terrorist and turns his reactor into a bomb
I'm not personally arguing this is how it is in real life, I'm saying this is what the movie shows us, and is part of the fantasy its telling. Bruce really never did anything wrong except believe his enemies when they convinced him to give up fighting. His only failures are the self-doubt that causes inaction, and giving up private control of himself and his company
>>
>>214802199
by putting in the realm of fantasy, the only place it actually works, makes it staunchly not “right wing.”
>>
>>214802939
>no fantasy can represent itself because it inherently calls itself false by being a fantasy
That's nonsense. You don't even believe that yourself.
>>
>>214802800
There’s no reason to consider the third one and the same universe as the first two. They’re all about 9/11. The third one is about occupy.
