Back then programming a computer with a complex multi-step mathematical calculation was a bigger pain in the ass and would take longer than just handing the formula and input over to someone with a mechanical calculator and having them run the numbers themselves. NASA had to do a lot of that so they employed a bunch of women with a basic knowledge of math to run formulae like say, calculating how much delta-v you'd get out of a rocket of a particular mass with a particular amount of fuel to burn at a particular specific impulse. The rocket scientists were the ones coming up with the formulae.
