Because TV seasons are now produced like movies, where it takes about three years to get it done and you get the same amount of content that you would get in an average movie, but with a bunch of filler to stretch the runtime to eight episodes.
I guess if a show gets four seasons in this format it can be considered long running since it would take about nine years to complete, not counting the time it took to produce the first season.

This would cost 10 billion to make in current year. The 20+ episodes a season, shooting on location, special effects and God knows what else. The TV business is just different now.

This is the worst thing to ever happen to TV shows because it pretty much ensures no more high episode count comfy shows that can be watched casually. It worked for a handful of shows that should really have just been considered a new thing somewhere between movies and TV shows, but not as a replacement for TV shows. Now every low effort showrunner thinks and acts like a spoiled movie director with zero accountability or sense of urgency

Streaming has changed the game. "Primetime" is anytime, so every show has to compete with everything equally, not just shows from the same time slot.

Entire model changed. In past you wanted a lot of of episodes because it meant you’d make more money in syndication. 100 episodes is the low mark to get syndicated. If you have a lot episodes can make a lot from cabal channels that need to fill time slots. But since everything going steaming that’s no longer a requirement
