It feels like we have had multiple episodes of wheel spinning to get to this point and then it's a cheap cameo and twist everyone saw coming. I would be forgiving if the twist happened a few episodes ago because I'd expect more action to come but for some reason Gunn felt it necessary to repeat the "team are fucked up post season 1" for most of the season. Vigilante has been screwed most of the season too and I'm glad he at least had something this episode.

In the DCU we're already in the trap of having shows/seasons of shows where the goal is to advance the plot and set certain in-universe events into motion with little attention given to character development. Peacemaker is the titular character of the show. How has he grown at all this season? If anything, he's regressed. The narrative of season 1 consisted of Chris embracing his heroism, overcoming regret, and learning to trust. Season 2 has him return to a childlike state, quite literally living with family again. He abandons his friends. He is remarkably ignorant about the new world he chose to inhabit. It can be argued that Harcourt is learning to be vulnerable and honest. Economos is coming out of his shell and growing a spine. Vigilante's arc will probably deal with overcoming abandonment/betrayal and learning forgiveness. Adebayo is useless. But Chris... what even is this arc? I'm rooting for him because John Cena's great but this is probably Gunn's weakest character work so far.

Alternate dimension but they're le bad is such a tired, trotted-out trope. It can be fun but it feels really disappointing that THIS was the big reveal we spent six whole episodes trying to build towards.It's such a banal and sophomoric route to take things. I can not overstate how much this has taken the wind out of my sails for this season.The shorter episode runtimes with abyssal pacing across the arc was already irksome but I was hoping at least that tension would build to a pressure release worth it.At the very least, Cena and Holland both absolutely nailed that emotional confrontation and that's served as the highlight of both the episode and the whole season. As much as the broad strokes are this trash, the character stories in season 2 have been a delight to follow.
