They should have made it that Dexter did turn himself in after all, at the same time Doakes was discovered, and everyone ignored him/thought he was pressured into a false confession by Doakes. Then he could think he was properly destined to be a serial killer and would never get caught, and they wouldn't have to retread this storyline two more times with LaGuerta and Angel.

Dexter was just a prelude to DOAKES, he always wears sunglasses (his vision is augmented), and he also breakdances after he takes down a serial killer.His nemesis initially appears to be Lundy, the federal pedophile who fucks Debra because she looks like a teenage boy, but later we learn that he feeds Doakes secret intel because he knows Doakes is so based.
