Just got done seeing it, a solid 8.5/10 from me, damn good. Very different than anything PTA has ever done.
The ending chase scene thru the hilly roads was amazingly shot, and I loved how that artistic choice eventually led to actually effecting the narrative when she slams on the breaks out of view from the guy chasing her and makes him crash. It was a pretty damn funny movie too, my theater was full and there were multiple times everyone laughed out loud. It not as “cerebral” as most of PTAs work, but it was beautiful shot and wonderfully paced.

When she's at the revolutionary nun camp they're concerned that she's too much like her mother, immediately embracing the lifestyle. Even the machine gun scene is matched to create the parallel. I just got home from the theater. It was a really, really well done movie, even if I don't care for what the characters stand for.
For a 2.5+ hour movie it flew by and I felt like I went on a real journey with these people. I did figure out a pretty big aspect of the movie early on, which kind of hurt it.
The performances in this are amazing. Has Leo ever acted poorly? Is he in the running for greatest actor of all time?
Benecio was excellent as well and Sean Penn was amazing.
The music and direction were top tier as well.

I liked it, but honestly the movie is fucking bewildering in its pacing. It spends a solid 20-30 minutes focusing on the mother who is utterly irrelevant the moment she steps off screen, save for the last moment where the apparently gave a letter that very clearly wasn't from her given that Bob outright says she hasn't talked to him at all since she ran. The whole chase scene on the rooftops only for Bob to fall off, get captured, then escapes to get back with Sensei seems like a massive waste of time as well. We don't get any new information or perspectives, it's mostly for a gag that tossed the realm of belief out the window (Bob falls like 3 stories and gets up like nothing happened) just to get us back to where we already were. I get that it's mostly symbolic, but there's a lot of these moments where it feels like the director felt that he had to expand the run-time even longer. It's a 2 hour and 50 minute movie, it could have been trimmed down and refined. Also, the score felt oddly disjointed at times. Maybe I'm stupid though, I'd enjoy getting different perspectives on the movie, and I enjoyed the symbolism for what it was. I just felt it could have been executed better.

It's a great cinemascore but I think it's partly a result of the fact that the movie didn't break out in its opening weekend. People were bandying around $50M domestic and it's looking like it'll get $25M if it's lucky, so most of the people who went were already in the bag for this. Just saw it last night, solid 7/10 I'd say
It was pretty entertaining and enjoyable, felt very well paced (felt like a 2-hour movie despite being 3). Music, cinematography, acting, etc, were all pretty good.
I think the movie's got good bones but fell apart with the story for a variety of reasons.

We weren't given much reason to sympathize/like most characters/groups.
The French 75 were a bunch of incompetent, bumbling, drug-addicted "revolutionaries" who never really seemed to have a goal past "obtain money through violence." Junglepussy standing up on the counter of the bank waving a pistol around shouting "This is what (black) power looks like." lost all possible sympathy from me. That's not power, that's tyranny. These aren't revolutionaries, they're thugs trying to feel important/vindicated by attaching themselves to a "cause."
I feel the obvious play would be to make the Chrstimas Adventurerers be "evil and intimidating" but instead we got "evil and weird." They did not feel threatening. Lockjau felt threatening as a military leader, but not as a member of the club. The weirdness of the club felt out of place tonally, like it was used for comic relief to show how weird and silly they are, and I don't think this movie really needed comic relief.
In short, these two extreme organizations felt very lazily written, and that they relied on the current sociopolitical climate to fill in the gaps of what each group stood for. Which makes sense for cutting corners, but it dates the movie hard.

The secondary groups were more compelling to me. del Toro's character as the karate instructor was probably the most well done. He was well liked by the community, respected, he was a competent leader whom everyone followed. He knew the systems, how to get people places, and had been doing it succesfully for a while. He was shown as far more competent than the French 75. The latter seemed like nerds playing out their power fantasies with their parents' money.

Closest thing I would compare it to in terms of politics is Children of Men, probably a little more left than that, as the leftist group in OBAA is not as conniving and egregiously scummy as the Fishes. It's very obviously sympathetic to minorities/immigrants and unabashedly anti-fascist. The protagonist however is a former activist who mostly got into for the pussy and now just wants to ferry his black daughter figure to safety. DiCaprio puts in basically the same performance as Rick Dalton.

I guess the other opposing group at this level would be the US Military/border patrol, but not much to say there. I wish we'd seen how easily they took down the nunnery, that felt like wasted potential. Why include the scene of the nuns practicing using their heavy weaponry and then have them all get restrained off screen without single gunshot? If the soldiers were that good, why couldn't they feel more like the opposing force to the French 75? They wouldn't've needed the Christmas Adventurers, just make Lockjau the guy in charge of said elite group. If the goal is to showcase the bizarre nature of race purist secret society-type people, they probably could've done that without introducing a whole other group.

I don't think the movie had many strong characters. Benicio del Toro's is probably the only major character that was all-around well written. I mostly liked Villa, but her decision at the end to continue her mother's work and be a revolutionary was lame. I was stupidly hoping she'd go on to try to affect actual, long-lasting positive change, but of course it'd be too much to ask and clearly not what they were going for. diCaprio's character was lame, bumbling drug-addicted failure of a father. Maybe good for a comedy movie, but he was a loser here. Why would I want to watch a loser as a main character? Only saving grace being that he did care about his daughter, and that's a good thing.
Lockjau was not convincing. He easily could've been a truly evil character that inspired fear and dread, but instead they made him a creepy uncle type. Doesn't help that his skin was all weird and red and his hair was dorky. He came off as a weird gross old guy that I don't want to look at, and not at least a connoisseur of the devious.

tl;dr, good production value, fun action movie, but as a poignant piece of art it fails because it's not clear in its message/characterization and relies on pre-existing sociopolitical views to strike any kind of chord.

I think the problem these two things create is that it leaves very few likable characters. I think del Toro's character is the only likeable one, but he's a secondary character at best.

I don't know what the movie was going for with its message, but I think viewing the events of the movie on the basis of race is putting your head in the sand and ignoring reality because it's easier.
All races of people in the movie are shown as being capable of good and bad, it's better to analyze the individual on the basis of their actions/beliefs rather than their race.

Oh, so that's what that was. I was ~5 minutes late to the theater and missed that. I came in when Lockjau was watching Perfidia through the binoculars.
I still disagree though, I don't think violence is a method for change worth striving for. I think there are better ways of affecting positive change than violence. It'd be more compelling if the French 75 was shown having actually achieved things of value, but on a grand scale, they were powerless losers from the beginning to the end. They never really seemed to make any headway/progress throughout the movie, only setbacks, so all their violence came to naught: they're failed revolutionaries who only ever made things worse.

Just came back from watching it.

We sit down at the seats, and what fills our senses for the next 3 hours is quite possibly the most beautiful, inspiring, and triumphant work of art I have ever seen in my 35 years on this Earth. And I’ve played Disco Elysium and got to see Hamilton live on Broadway.

Stellar. Just simply stellar. Never has a film been more relevant and poignant for its time. I particularly related to the cuckolding of the main character and raising his birthing body's son, as it accurately reflected my own lived experience, and I'm sure that of many others of us standing for the revolution.

This is a turning point, for our country, for our culture, for our world, for history itself. Thank you Leo, Sean Penn, PTA, and Warner Bros for standing on the right side of history and igniting the revolution of oppressed folx against the power structures controlled by the white elites.
