I wouldn’t call Magnolia “deep.” PTA’s early career (Hard Eight through Magnolia) is a series of Scorsese and Altman pastiches and he brings it off more successfully in Magnolia than Boogie. I know it’s intentional but Boogie’s world is so sleazy tacky and hollow that I just get sick of it over the course of two and a half hours. This is probably a matter of personal taste. PTA is better at earnestness than satire and irony, so cribbing Short Cuts plays more to his strengths than cribbing The Player. Magnolia has a better cast with better performances, it’s more ambitious and original. You could argue it’s gimmicky and manipulative and I agree to an extent but it at least delivers some kind of emotional catharsis, whereas Boogie didn’t at all for me. Magnolia is flawed, badly paced at points, some “threads” of the story are a lot more interesting and convincing than others, and at points like you said it verges on or crosses over into treacly melodrama. I didn’t like the frog storm or the Amie Mann singalong. But in terms of technique, scope, acting, plot and emotional payoff I strongly prefer it to Boogie Nights
