How would you survive a The Road (2009) type happening?
I would get raped and enjoy it, and that’s what no one did
Very disappointing movie
Very carefully.
>>214841347The cannibalism scene disgusted me. Such an ugly dehumanizing scene. Fuck the pervert who conceived it.
>>214841347I would listen to what they had to say and that's what no one did.

>>214841347if i had no choice but to survive this type of world with my family, the arguably most humane thing to do is mass suicide
>>214841385Taking feel-bad fiction personally makes you sound like a moronic facebook boomer.
most of us would probably die in the first month , me ? i would gang up with questionable people that have done questionable things and take care of eachother and no1 else unless it´s a child or a coupple / lone woman down on their luck as long as they can contribute to our survival and don´t drag us down.if you are solo with no friends or acquintances and 0 survival skills or knowledge , your fantasy will not become the reality you´d expect it to be.iron up and pile dem woods.
>>214841594>no explanation given as to why there are no animals nor plants to eat and why whatever killed edible plants and animals didn’t also kill the humans.Because firestorms and nuclear winter killed the plants and humans outlived animals because animals don't know how to use can-openers.
>>214841347Objectively you should kill every people you meet to steal their food, which is deeply depressing.
>>214841414The Richard Speck game plan. I like it
>>214841385wait till you hear about the part with the newborn baby from the book that never made the movie
>>214841594There are people who will tell you the nature of the catastrophe in The Road isn't important because the story is meant to be about how humanity responds to the end of life on Earth. But that's fundamentally dishonest because the way humanity responds depends on whether or not there is Hope. lAnd you need to understand the nature of the catastrophe to know if there is hope or not.
>>214841761What kind of nuclear winter instantly kills all edible plants and animals, destroys Cheyenne mountain, missile silos, and other nuclear bunkers with hydroponics labs, and wipes out human memories on how to care for crops and livestock? Was it caused by a terrorist-redirected-naquadria-infused-asteroid?
>>214841831>depends on whether or not there is Hope.maybe people just don't know? Common people

>>214841347>governments goes away>everyone immediately resorts to tribal cannibalism
>>214841385Why does it always devolve into crap like that anyways, there are literally plants growing in the background. Plant some fucking seeds and grow shit. It's really not that hard
>>214841861>immediatelyThe kid was born after the fall of civilization (assuming the dad and mother wasnt dumb enough to concieve a child after the fact and the mom got pregnant aorund the time when shit started to go south). He's about 10-11 so fair to say at a decade had gone by since the fall of civilization. But thats besides the point of the entire story. Whatever happened is left unexplained because it isnt important.
>>214841861yes, see siege of leningrad>russians aren't humansokay, great famine, donner party, siege of ma'arra>>214841876apparently it's some super volcano being set off setting off massive ash cloud which causes ecological collapse, no sunlight and global cooling
>>214841831i think the point is that there is no hope and humanity has to make their own somehow. it's why the ending is a bit ambiguous with the group who find the boy, you hope they are good people who will look after him - and that means you are carrying the fire
>>214841876>Plant some fucking seeds and grow shit. It's really not that hardWatch the movie before you plant those seeds though
>>214841347>cant grow food>animals die off because nothing grows>the climate is fucked so you're freezing all the time and lighting a fire is bound to attract other people>you have to live like a hobo and hope you find anything eadible left behind>every interaction with another human is a risk that isnt worth it>the only alternative to that is killing and robbing people for whatever food they have and/or cannibalismHonestly, I'd just an hero. There are lives that are worth living and fighting for, but that doesnt sound like it and I guess thats why the mother killed herself and wanted to kill her own kid because she saw the writing on the wall. Whoever manages to survive that hellscape is going to be so fucked up and damaged that they'll never experience a moment of happiness or joy, just a scared animal wandering from scarce food source to scarce food source
>hungry>plant seeds now and eat 3 months lateror>hungry>eat that man

>>214841347The Road is actually one of the best movies I’ve ever seen.
>>214841347but what do they eat
>>214841347I grow about 40% of my food in my basement, but that's because I like bread and meat. In a scenario where I just have to wait out ecological collapse, I'd suck it up and go vegetarian moleman mode. Sure, it'd be awful to live on bare minimum power and nothing but greens, beans and tubers, but gangs of cannibals are a really short-term problem that solves itself the longer the disaster goes on. I guess the real problem is the fact I can only feed myself, and anyone else who survives is either a fellow paranoid recluse moleman or former rape-cannibal. Those aren't really conditions conducive to rebuilding civilisation.
>>214843048Watch the movie and find out.
>>214841831Fundamentally braindead take, because the moral of the story is that humans create the Hope they're depending on.

>>214841788>Would Hurt a Child: In a world this absolutely devastated, it's unfortunately to be expected. The cannibals have lost all compunction about hurting, killing, or eating kids: the trucker who the Man confronts and shoots attempts to take the Boy hostage, the cannibal brigade that the pair later hide from are described as bringing "catamites"note with them, and in one of the more gruesome scenes of the book the pair pass a newborn baby, roasted on a spit and partially eaten.rude

>>214841838>>214841831These people are touching on the essence of the Road, but I will dumb it down for the Modern Audience. The Road’s apocalypse is kept ambiguous yet all-consuming because the writer wants to simulate the conditions for hope. The world is fucked. Nothing grows, nothing lasts. Was it a super-volcano? Nuclear war? Giant meteor? Doesn’t matter. The world is in a bad way and we don’t even get to see the first couple years of attempted restoration. Things are winding down into total death. But (you) have a son that was born into this world, and despite your best efforts still smiles at you, laughs with you, and is growing up in a dead world. Are you really going to say to him that nothing matters? He’s your son. You hope for him, you want the best for him. Your life, the world you know, is done. It’s been done for years. But maybe his life can matter - you don’t think it will, but that’s the thing about hope. You want it to be better. That’s why the book ends with the son meeting a good family, and ends without any follow-up. You hope things will turn out well.

>>214844418>He didn’t take biology in High School
>>214844306Based. Cormac is not doing an allegory about God with the Father and the Son, but I really like how the small line of the son being the word of God, is a direct reference to John 1. >The Road: He knew only that the child was his warrant. He said: If he is not the word of God God never spoke. >John 1: In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.>He was in the beginning with God.>All things came to be through him, and without him nothing came to be
>>214844306Actually; I’m aware as to what the overall plot The Road entailed but was criticizing OP’s topic for discussion as The Road’s apocalypse wasn’t sufficiently explained to allow for a properly roleplayed thread to be set up. It’s rigged from the start!

>>214844418I mean, if you really think about it, there are loads of deep sea ecosystems that are entirely separate from phosyntheyic systems. If you had a boat and the right maps you could fish there all day every day
>>214844061As long as onshore winds don't suddenly stop, my turbine setup will provide enough power for my lamps. That said, there isn't enough light for plants, but I'm imagining a permanent overcast of around 8 or 9 okta, which is enough for my large array to generate around 40% of my needs over a standard day.>too noticibleWell, if it's a cannibal raider gang with hundreds of men and drone surveillance sweep teams, I guess so, but there's a point of diminishing returns where it becomes more feasible to eat other cannibals than devote hundreds of man-hours to tracking down one guy based on aerial recon. I don't think groups that large would survive at a point in time when almost everyone else is dead and they're down to grid-searching rural areas in the hope of maybe coming across someone to eat.

The Road is pointless because what follows is logically at one point there'll be no more water. You're just torturing your boy, you're FORCING him to suffer.
Would life be easier or harder for vampires in a post-apocalyptic setting? Assuming they need to feed on humans regularly (with or without killing them by draining too much, your call)
>>214841347Probably not as the world is totally fucked
>>214844825False. At the end of the movie you actually see sunlight for the first time, it signifies that the skies are finally clearing from the disaster and long dormant seeds will begin to grow again
>>214841385Cormac McCarthy is a genius who makes pussies like you uncomfortable with mere words on a paper.

That kid is dead, right? Reacting with so much emotion at stranding their robber naked was a very bleak indication that despite their lifestyle, he was still too sheltered to the realities of survival. His father failed him.Unless he somehow lucked into getting a miracle step-father better than the one he had (because people often extensively track others in the post-apocalypse with only good intentions) then he has no chance. You'd have to take a prybar to everything the book/film establishes up to that point to conclude he went off with a happy family or even had a sizable chance at surviving longer than a week. The mother was likely correct.

>>214845143The nigger left his hermitage and walked down the downtrodden path along ramshackle tincan dwellings and destitute fences and wired clothing lines on his way to quench his negro thirst among his fellow negros at the pumping station. Obsidian scion, cursed to wander the earth. 30 silver dollars slapping against his hip, witness of his grand betrayal yet the promise of salvation. The stale air of the river and its floating debris filled his wide negro nostrils. Yesterday they'd found a fresh body in it, how many unknown carcasses its murky waters knew was a secret kept between God Almighty and the crawdads. Nigger children played along the gravel road throwing dead rats at one another by the tails like Belaric slingers, ancient warfare reborn among the shanties of the modern world. A bellicose play repeated ad infinitum by the marching of callus bare feet on the amphitheater of imagination interrupted by the sound of dinner bells and shouting and the smell of cooking to be continued at another time. He kicked a dead cat with his worn boot, toe cap missing for half a year. He adjusted the brim of his new Stetson hat and he spat. From the negro Church he heard antediluvian chants out of place in a civilized age. Flittermice flapped about in their insane chase in the night sky, bringing about pestilence wherever they decided to fall dead. Halfway there. His throat was itching. The old pumphouse not only supplied water but cold beer and company and games of hazard and the tales of old niggers to the discorded negro tunes of jazz. An old generator kept the looted fridge running, the broken piano was found under the expressway. Blocks of ice and sawdust kept the rest of the stock cold in an icebox. They shared this establishment with roaches and rats and mosquitoes and the lice residing along their negro scalps. A structure of the white man appropriated by his charges in their own image. The white man's burden

>>214841831this anon accidentally stumbled upon the question the book/film itself answers. The philosophical question the film/book are asking is what do you do in a world that seems completely hopeless. Do you simply give up like so many do in the story? (the man's wife is a perfect example). Or do you carry the fire of hope within you (the man and boy both do this) to search for a better life. The man and boy are ultimately rewarded for this hope in the end. The family is quite obviously not cannibalistic, they begin following the man/boy in order to find out whether they are 'good' people like them. People whose morality does not reflect the circumstances they find themselves in, but instead is rooted in human values (christian values). Trancending one's environment and having a moral compass that is not just hopeless nihilism is a big part of the book/films themes. The last paragraph of the book is hopeful and shows that despite the world being destroyed, the 'fire' can be carried on. "Once there were brook trouts in the streams in the mountains. You could see them standing in the amber current where the white edges of their fins wimpled softly in the flow. They smelled of moss in your hand. Polished and muscular and torsional. On their backs were vermiculate patterns that were maps of the world in its becoming. Maps and mazes. Of a thing which could not be put back. Not be made right again. In the deep glens where they lived all things were older than man and they hummed of mystery."

Of a thing which could not be put back. Not be made right again. In the deep glens where they lived all things were older than man and they hummed of mysteryIt's a nice whitepilled alt interpretation, but this passage is clearly mourning how irrevocably fucked the world had become regardless of humanity's (and the father/boy's) own suffering. There's a lot of weight given to the changes to the environment as much as the people. But after a long trudge through misery, people see what they want to see, and instead read this final passage and choose to believe the boy was scouted by a benevolent group who raised him to adulthood and he got married and had a house and a dog and a wife and a son and died old and happy while 'Firework' by Katy Perry played and the world eventually got better with pretty water and flowers. Because it's human to (c)hope.

Because it's human to (c)hope.made me lol. The final passage is both hopeful and mournful imo as is the ending of the book. Greypilled. Again, the book/film show over and over that there is not any rational reason to carry on and be hopeful in the world the characters are in, but they do. The idea that a family can survive in this world and (seemingly) not be starving and even have a dog is possibly the most hopeful part of the entire book/film.
>>214845593very good post and it annoys me that people can't see this. the book is a lovely book about goodness in the face of almost unimaginable adversity, about a father's love for his son and hope for his future explicitly written for his son and people act like it's some edge doomer nihilist thing
