Let's talk about ships, man.
Do you like Stargate???
>>214843236>wings>in spaceFor what purpose?
>>214843236
>>214843467To sell more lego sets, goy

>>214843432I prefer Atlantis.
>>214843518That's for atmospheric re-entry.There's no need for an interstellar fighter craft to include wings when there's no planetary atmosphere to fly through.
>>214843659Most if not all of the spacecraft in Star Wars enter and exit planetary atmospheres willy-nilly without a hinch even star destroyers and shit but not the Death Star which appears to be a mobile space station

>>214843467Nigga...
looking forward to seeing the ISV's again in the new movie
>damn gringo bridge
>>214843716The space shuttle has wings because it glides after reentry. It did not have power. The ships in star wars have wings for aesthetics only.
>>214843944You say that as if ships in Star Wars never leave space.
>>214843432Ngl that's a horrible design.

>>214843432Yeah, we like Stargate!
>>214843996My cope is that it's supposed to be ugly and ungainly to show that earth hadn't mastered the technology yet, like the equivalent of WW1-era tanks.
>>214844012>mogged
>>214843236GUNSINSPACE
>>214844082problem is this is what unmastered space travel looks like not that brutalist abomination
for me its the bird of prey
>>214843793This looks so fucking lame though
>>214844164>>214843944The shuttle is not a "space ship". It's an orbiter. It flies up to orbit, lets out satellites and station parts, then comes back down. It would never fly to the moon or mars. Actual spacecraft will never be designed for such "dual-use" to repeatedly fly down gravity wells, back up, then fly across space to another gravity well, go down and back up, etc. They'll attach to mother ships that only stay in zero gravity. Star Wars was at it's most realistic when Star Destroyers couldn't go down to planets and had to carry their tie fighters and shuttles around to different systems.
>>214844288You can hear the music just looking at the model.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MDm3_Sd-bJA
>>214844164Yeah, fair enough. There should have been an intermediate step between the space shuttle and the spaceborne aircraft carriers later in the show. But I guess the ugly grey brick was easier on the CGI budget.
>>214844338>"space" shuttle>flies in space>"The shuttle is not a 'space ship'"
>>214844374I refuse to accept that. I think they were going for very specific design and they got what they wanted. Why would a bumpy model be cheaper than a smooth model. Just saying.
>>214844563The sequel was overall stupid, but it had some neat human-alien hybrid tech ideas
>>214844483The Prometheus is so buttugly that I can't imagine it to be anything other than some weird compromise solution. imo the show runners made consistently good calls otherwise regarding the aesthetics of the SGC, the Gouald, etc.
>>214844662I always accepted that it was a deliberate choice to show that the SGC cobbled together a spaceship from reverse engineered technology as fast as possible, aesthetics be damned. From what I remember of SG-1 much was made of the fact that the Prometheus was a prototype with a rushed development.Doesn't excuse the follow-up ships like >>214844082 being just as ugly though.
>Battlestar Galactica rips off Star Wars>Star Wars rips off BG in returnlel
>>214844760This is where it peaked
>>214843467Because these ships also fight in atmosphere

>>214844718This looks like Babylon 5 if Babylon 5 was awful retarded shit.
>>214845061It's Call to Arms, buddy. And it led to Crusade which was pretty neat. Canceled before it could really go anywhere.
>>214845090I don't think for a second that an Earth/Centauri war would go this badly, especially after the events of the series
>>214845090Forced animation. The original Babylon 5 is the only good entry in the Babylon 5 franchise.

>>214845244She deserved better. Lucas was just fed up in ROTJ, I guess, and one shotting his big villains because he couldn't be asked to come up with good ways for them to go out.
>>214845249That's Germans for you
>>214845847
>>214845847Who made this and for what purpose?
>>214844082That one is pretty cool though.
>>214843236>Let's talk about ships, man.
>>214847205>ThunderbirdsNow that's the good shit. I miss the days when people could believe that an aircraft like TB2 could work just because it had an "atomic" power source.Supposedly TB1 was based on some obscure MiG prototype for a vertical takeoff/horizontal flight interceptor that never saw the light of day.

>>214848098James Cameron hired Syd Mead to work on Aliens. Cameron told Mead to design the Sulaco, pic related is what Syd designed. Cameron was not happy. Cameron told him it should look like a rifle.
>>214844310Bold words for someone who started thread with Star Wars
>>214848542I think Cameron made the right call. The Sulaco shape is iconic and unique. And the "rifle" thing really just hinges on the "handle" which is just a radar/signal antennae. It could easily be on the top or side. That same sort of protrusion is on most spaceship designs really. Only disappointing thing is not seeing the Sulaco actually use its weaponry.

>>214850575On the off chance you have to make rough planet fall fucking SOMEWHERE, you'd want a bit of streamlining. This take that space ships need to only function in space is baffling because it completely rejects the possibility of things going wrong and the utility of being able to function within dense atmo if the need arose.

>>214843467of course functionally useless unless you hang things from them or want to look cool
>>214850575If it's primarily or exclusively for use outside of atmosphere, no. None whatsoever, in fact it would create some problems for component packing, micrometeoroid mitigation and temperature control. Until we have something like forcefield tech to replace whipple shields and those honeycomb looking debris redirection arrays, anything going into space long term is going to trend toward being pretty boxy or cylindrical. Going out of your way to use compound curves is going to generally be avoided anywhere but maybe on reentry craft from stable orbit.
>>214854183>>214843467>functionally uselessnigga they can be used as radiatorsthere is no atmosphere in space so it's very hard to shed heat and radiating it away is very slow so it needs big surface>>214845249>>214843657nice, very gigeresque & lovecraftian

i like the TNG philosophy for spaceship interiorsif you're flying around in a highly advanced machine that can comfortably hold hundreds of people for extended journeys, and the fights you occasionally get into involve weapons that could destroy planets, then you might as well eschew all illusions of the benefits of outfitting everything with brutalist utilitarianism or the kind of spartan, military, submarine-esque aesthetic that other, gayer, trek shows have gone for just make it comfy, make it carpeted, make it look clean and neutral and like a nice place to idle away time in. i too feel like you'd make more rational decisions if you were in an environment that looks like an upscale hotel lobby than if you were in one that looks like the inside of a grungy all-metal shit box

>>214863092the enterprise in picard's time and the TNG era is a research, exploration, and diplomatic vessel that handles rescues, trades, first contact and negotiations, they do all sorts of shit so they need all sorts of people. it's also a BIG ship, and it needs maintenance. think, if some towns throughout the world function in populations as small as 30 or less, a population of a little over a thousand - a lot of them having brought their families along - could do with a barber, a dentist, several doctors, a bar, several places to hang out and relax when you aren't working, security to protect all those people and enforce the rules and procedures, people to clean, people to maintain ship systems, people to respond to emergencies specifically and are trained in dangerous EVA operations, people who categorize and research the weird shit they find on planets with alien fauna or flora, people who watch the bridge for the other shifts, people who do the jobs of ALL the prior stated jobs with the first rotation of people are sleeping or otherwise not working. the list goes on and on and on. you need rooms for all those people, storage, recreational spaces, eating areas, emergency facilities, a medbay, a bridge and battle bridge, an engineering section, a hangar bay, a brig, spare rooms for guests or diplomats, science labs, places to educate and keep children, a nursery for babies, probably some kind of kennel for any pets onboard, again, the list goes onif anything i always thought the enterprise was like 30% too small
