they always want to make a director's cut but never want to make the viewer's cut

There are a number of scenes cut from the theatrical version that should, or need to be, in the film (a lot of people remember them being in the film because most people first saw it on DVD). It's all of the other nonsense he did, like changing the music and adding horrendous cheap CGI effects and explainers for the time travel shit.
The time travel exposition stuff are my least favorite parts of the movie. I watch this for the comfy suburban 80's vibes and millieu of Donnie's life.
Smart guys think everyone is dumb so they try to explain things so people don't get lost but what they don't get is that dumb people are happier when they are ignorant and less retarded people enjoy mystery more than they do exposition so just do what Creggers did and be a better Jordan Peele by not being so Peele about it.
