I'll start.
Funny movie
This is shit btw
I always remember this poster from visiting my video store
>>214846317They used this poster in Fallout 2's New Reno
This intrigued me so much as a kid. I think it's brilliant that they get so specific. If they said, "Scariest movie ever!" that would be less scary because it's so broad and even generic. But the focus on the last 30 minutes? Intriguing and ominous.
>>214846317Cool movie.
>>214846317Kek. I remember that one. It was often near this one.
>>214846418great flic
>>214846558Reminds me of this one. For who knows what reason, it was up for years.
>>214846622I used to see this all the time as a kid, and was never allowed to rent it. When I finally saw it, it did not disappoint. Unlike this turd.
Both the poster and vhs cover for this had me massively intrigued as a kid, long before I had any clue who David Cronenberg was.
This is an obscure one. I only saw it a few times at shops as a kid. It's still the only time I have seen a Double VHS box.
I was scared shitless every time I saw this.
>>214846770The fuck am I looking at, a CD?
I have never been able to find a reference or photograph to this, but there was a clamshell VHS release of this I used to see at the video store, where the eyeball on the front was sculpted soft plastic and raised up. I used to just like looking at it at the video store.
>>214846797It's a double wide VHS clamshell. Hellraiser 2 was the only one I SPECIFICALLY remember, but I have vague memories of some other mini-series style shit coming in them too.Never got to rent it, but assume the second tape is just Part 1.
I think this is the first instance of an endless recurrence visual I can remember.
>>214846882Here is another one I used to see a lot (and never rented). All the novelty boxes used to fascinate me. I remember one that had a really shitty head on a spring thing and for awhile there were a bunch with lenticular prints. I can't recall the tape, but it was a very early kids film a lenticular hologram (so 3D and image changed when you tilted the cover).
>>214846770>>214846882Neat.jpg
>>214846845This isn't it, but is an example of what I was talking about
>>214846317Is this the film she's in a high rise, she's got vibrating knickers on and there's a guy sitting watching her? Seen this on RTE years ago
Another thing that used to make me want to rent movies was the content warning under the age rating. The following always made me perk up>Occasional Graphic Violence>High Level Sex Scenes>Assaultive LanguageThe one for Robocop 2 was really rare.
Luckily for me, I would find Tinto Brass' whole filmography on the hub 20 years later. This stuff is prime pervert material, and I don't even speak Italian. It's basically the sexual fantasies I had before going to sleep as a tween
I thought this movie was gonna be metal as fuck and spent literal years trying to rent it because I was a snot nosed kid so they wouldn't let me rent it and my parents wouldn't get it for me. When I finally did get it it sucked, less production value than a goosebumps episode.
>>214846642Lol I remember this one, too. As an adult I am more interested in it as it is a Ken Russell film I've never seen.
>>214847239Further; Most films had the common and standard content warnigs (i.e. medium level violence, occasional coarse langaue, high level sex scenes and so on). Rare content warnings (like Occasional Graphic Violence) got my interest, but even rarer uncommon useage was an even bigger sell. "Adult Themes" was a standard content warning on tons of PG and M rated films. Basically>Okay for kids, but some of the subject matter may skew adultWhen Fight Club came out, it didn't have ANY warnings for sex, violence or language. Just a warning for Adult Themes, the only time I ever saw on, a, well, adult film. It immediately grabbed my interest.
>>214847406Fuck I hated when that happened.
>>214846568Peak Béart body but absolute snorefest of a movie.
we ended up renting it when i was a kidi mostly just remember the ridiculous motorcycle scene, and some guy flopping around when he got shot with a machine gun
What a darling little snowmannnaaaaaAAAAAAA
>>214847406Im pretty sure they blew the entire budget on him swallowing that cat and thats not saying much
>>214847406Peak "I should have left it unwatched" tier.
>>214847585Lol ya that one got me too
This cover had me shook for weeks.
>>214846399They had a life size carboard standee of this in the video store when I was a kid and I couldn't stop staring at it
>>214847687The font is hilarious.
Don't ask me why, but I was convinced this was going to be the sexiest film I ever saw, when I would finally get a chance to rent it.it was
Always noticed this one then one day we rent it and it's the dumbest shit I ever saw
>>214847535Uhhhhh GUYS GET IN HERE>samurai which were known for their suicidal attacks against their enemies staring at the twin towers>"A Steven Mackler Presentation">A S T E V E N M A C K L E R P R E S E N T A T I O N>ATTACK SEPT NINE AMGUYS WE NEED EVERYONE IN HERE NOW
Take me back bros :(High speed internet and everything being easily available was a fucking mistake
>>214847707>>214846399they had a poster up for barb wire for probably a year at our video store when i was a kid, and i remember really, really liking going to that storeone day it was gone and it made me sad
fucks vhs
This somehow fell into the "low budget trash that doesn't live up to the cover I stared at as a kid" and "was everything I hoped it would be" categories at the same time.
>>214846317when I went through my mom’s vhs collection as a kid I thought Deer Hunter was about oil workers someplace that went nuts
>>214847773>samurai which were known for their suicidal attacksThat's kamikaze, not samurai, lmao.
>>214846317>"hmm whats that, thats gotta be good movie">*it is a good moviefeels good man
>>214847856I had a lot of misconceptions about Deliverance. I couldn't figure out why my dad would never let me rent an old adventure movie.
>>214847806Renting was definitely funner than the system we got now. No trailers, no way to tell if a movie was good or not unless someone you personally knew had seen it, just an incredible vhs cover and 3 blurry stills on the back with 20 words saying what the movie was about.
>>214847885gonna peep this, haven't seen. was gonna watch godfather again, but i'll get my Caan fix with this instead.
Maybe someone here can help me ouy with one that used to catch my eye as a kid but I cant for the life of me find ot on the internet since I forgot its name. It lookef like a sci fi comedy or something simila. the cover was the hero and the heroine standing on top of some old mad scientist looking guys head like it was a small planet and I believe he was holding her in a pulp hero like bridal carry. I remember on the back of the box it looled like he was fighting some sort of monster as well. Anyone got any idea what that could be?
for obvious reasons
>>214847985helicopter stunts
Movies now are so bad, there's probably gonna be a renaissance for this kinda crap that was dismissed at time of release... we didn't know how good we had it
>>214846642>This is no bedtime story That tagline intrigued me as a kid. Now I realize that it's reaction to Pretty Woman being a "fairy tale". When I was a kid it looked very dark ominous.Movie isn't really that dark and ominous, however. It's actually kinda campy and doesn't seem like gritty realism.By the way, is this a coomer thread or a scary thread?
>>214846770wow I remember seeing this too
>>214848023>>214847985>look mom, car chases and helicopters! that looks so cool, i want to watch it! and i know you like bond
>>214848166kek
There's a cover that simply has a couple having missionary sex. It doesn't show anything, it's just naked man laying on top of a naked woman, looks a bit like a romance novel cover without clothing. I'm trying to remember the name of it. I thought it was "Sorceress" but I didn't find it on google. The title likely relates to women plus evil magic based on how I thought I remembered the name.>>214848081looks like a little bit of both. What kid wouldn't be intrigued by sex and violence?
>>214847981This doesn't quite fit, but it immediately sprung to mind, partly because I used to love the cover.
>>214848238I think I know the movie you are talking about, and I watched it on youtube some years ago. Young girl gets possessed or something by an evil witch aunt and seduces a guy in her suburb. Started with an S.
>>214847585I see my waifu in the background
>>214846781Scariest nightmare of my life was just a still image of this poster I had to I look at in my sleep.
>>214848318>>214848238Never mind, I was thinking of this.>Sister, Sister is a 1987 American Southern Gothic psychological horror film directed and co-written by Bill Condon in his directorial debut, and starring Eric Stoltz, Jennifer Jason Leigh, and Judith Ivey. It follows two sisters operating an inn in the Louisiana bayou, whose dark secrets come to light after the arrival of a male guest.
>>214848263>Space Emperor puts hero in thought reading machine>"I want to punch him in the mouth...">"WHAT?!">"...But if I did that, someone would punch me in the mouth.">"You're damn right we would!"I love this movie.
>>214847856Turns out it was a wedding movie
The misleading poster is far scarier than the actual movie. It's not about skeletons, but rats.
>>214846317I read one of Ryu Murakami's books in public once and multiple people approached me to ask what it was about. Looking back I should have folded some paper over the cover.
>>214846588Good catch
>>214848543Reminds me of the subway scene in Ghostbusters II. Much scarier than some random rodents.
>>214847239Hell yeah. I rented Pathology (2008) just for its kino content description.>Rated R for disturbing and perverse behavior throughout, including violence, gruesome images, strong sexual content, nudity, drug use and languageHow can you read that and not want to immediately watch it?
>>214848584The first edition cover is the bestMakes Frank look otherworldly
>>214848687This one is better than >>214848584. I thought the book sucked though. Seemed try hard and there wasn't any depth to it.
>>214848758Filtered
I love this thread. Makes me nostalgic for back when video stores were still a thing and you were a kid walking through the aisles coming up with ideas of movies that might be way off or even better just based on what you see on the box.>>214848081>>214848238I'll introduce a new category: goofy comedies with ridiculously fake cover art.
>>214848263Yes it was very much in that style but I dont think it was a kids movie
I have never seen this movie, but I remember this shit scaring me.
>>214848856>this was the height or comedy for boomers>>214848824people really walked around with hair like that?
>>214848856Its alot better than its reputation. Just good old fashioned fun sci fi.
>>214848584>Ryu Murakami>Haruki MurakamiAre they the same person?
>>214848543Watched this after reading the book. Was mad.>>214848664I do not remember it being that extreme.>>214848824I ended up watching this on youtube and it did not live up to the poster at all.
>>214848830There are three others that jump out to me. Pic rel obviously, but it's not a comedy and no mad scientist. Ice Pirates and My Science Project (but he's holding a time travelling boombox).
>>214848774There's no depth to it, anon. Prove me wrong.
Every movie in these series, I loved looking at the box art like they were some kind of macabre Avengers. To this day, I have never seen one, just clips.
>>214848856I used to think Coneheads was a no budget lame rip off of Meet The Applegates. It's funny how not having access to movies and movie news outside of your video store warps perception.
I miss being this hornyJust a look at Denise's eyes was enough to turn me into an animal
>>214846317Always got my attention at the movie aisle
>>214849011Yep. Used to see this cover all the time.
I'm guessing it's nowhere near as exciting as I imagined.
>>214848946>>214848824So was it really big hands or just really small buildings?
didn't even know it was a friday the 13th sequel
>>214849070Legal shit already happening back then. So Cunningham dropped Friday name and mentions of Crystal Lake. I thinkcalled the lake something else
>>214848997You just reminded me. The poster for the first Ghoulies is probably more iconic but I saw the second one first and pic related is the image that drew me in.
>>214846556a classic, such an iconic poster, same with the original and the third one, they're all different yet they fit together somehow
>>214848946>I do not remember it being that extremeIt was fucking insane. As disturbing as a movie gets without being focused on torture or rape.
>>214846597Just read the plot on wikipedia, what a glorious mess, even Dexter Ward from Lovecraft stories has a cameo. It's based on a book but that one while also bizarre has little to do with the movie.
>>214846317Walked past this a thousand times
>>214846556Great poster. Awful, pointless, meandering, empty movie otherwise.
>>214846770very weirdI remember some of the longer movies like Gone With the Wind and such being on double vhs but they were just fatter and not wider
>>214849043Fuck Stephen King slop. I was so hyped for this and waited so long to rent it and it sucked dick.Fucking Werecats.
>>214846317Kinda off-topic, but this movie's trailer was included in a lot of the DVDs I watched when I was a kid, thought it was a funny spy comedy or something. Then I finally watched it and it was boring af.
>>214846317oh fuck I remember that one
>>214849108It boggles my mind that I saw that poster at every store as a kid.
The gaunt, black silhouettes against the preternaturally orange dusk. It was a haunted landscape, haunted by something primeval and atmospheric. A presence without a face, pervading the landscape. You can feel how cold it is.Those three figures. There's something odd about them. They're children, yet something else. They looked distorted to me. STRETCHED out to an unnatural degree. Like a walking projection from carnival mirrors. You could imagine limps and necks and faces that look ostensibly human, but distorted to a demented degree, a cruel mockery. It casts a spell, this poster. We true connoisseurs of dread know that in the right dearth of light, dusk can be a lot more unsettling than night. Maybe it's because as the last warm and safe beams of the sun fade at last, you're witnessing something dying. Day. The death of safety and the rise of something that does not rise, but instead pervades the atmosphere. The enchanting moon has yet to come out and the stars in the firmament have not woken, so in this witching hour between day and night, the light is a dying friend, and darkness is an enemy at the door, its presence inevitable. All the horrors of the night, real or imagined, have yet to show their face, and thus you only can dread. Evening is also colder than night, because it is cool, a shivering briskness still so close to warmth you can remember, not so cold you're acclimated. So even through your costume, your arms grow goosebumps and you shiver. It's cool where these three are, and it's OUTSIDE. The great outdoors has no safety, and they may only be a small selection of the monsters it has to offer. Yet there are no houses in the background of this poster. Where can you flee?
>>214847878Every time you engage in battle with lethal weapons you’re potentially committing suicide
>>214846317>unearthedThis was a recent release it wouldn't have been in a "vhs store" retarded zoomer
>>214849185I watched it twice and I still don't remember anything that happened
>>214847687fuggg. u made me realize possessor plagiarized that cover and I liked possessors poster before I saw the connection
>>214848997All the Full Moon releases had great boxes. The movies ended up being kind of shit, for the most part.
>>214846399Immense bush on this one
>>214849249It was though.
>>214846642>Theresa Russell in a Ken Russell film>WHORE
It terrified me.
this was the italian poster for Madonna's erotic thriller Body of Evidence
Jack Frost lenticular cover.
>>214849253I've watched the end so many fucking times, but only the entire movie once. Remember it being funny. Due for a rewatch, it's been a long ass time.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SlA9hmrC8DU
stephen king was very big when I was a kid and this is one of the boxes I remember looking at, along with It and Pet Sematary
>go to grab the latest movie>cant find this behind the vhs coverTruly the worst feeling ever...
>>214849070>>214849095>the creator of the first>returns to bring you the last
>>214849344I saw it in the theatre and thought it was meh. When I rewatched it a few years later I thought it was hilarious. I think it was poorly marketed and watching it in a theatre with everyone filtered, including oneself, ruins it.

>>214849185>actors' names line up with the photoswoah
>>214849426Makes sense. I think I knew who the Jewrectors were from Lebowski so I was pretty amped on it before I saw it.
>>214849384When I was like 8 I actually had an obese woman snatch the last copy of a movie out of my hands. There was a wall of them and we were both looking. I found it first and she literally just reached over, snatched it out of my hand, and turned for the counter without saying anything.
>>214849185>When I was a kidI was in college when this came out
>>214849475It has aged well too.
>>214849511We're going to invent a time machine and make this right. That fucking rancid bitch CANNOT get away with this BULLSHIT!!!!!!!!! I'M ACTUALLY FUCKING PISSED OFF RIGHT NOW
>>214849443Did you grow up in Utah or something? You could, if you had no shame and distracted parents, go and browse the adult section here. We even used to dack the VHS sleeve covers for the edited pornos and share them at school.
Louis Malle's Damage(the same director of Pretty Baby btw)
>>214846317This cover always grabbed my attention in a videostore. And not in a good way. Also, the cover wasn't censored like this picture.
>>214849335>>214847585The back of the box showed a fair amount of Shannon Elizabeth in the shower. My uncle actually had a copy. I remember that it smelled weird.
>>214849565That had a less interesting cover here. There was a film about the same topic that had a sexy cover though.
>>214849576We had these that we always used to look at and were never allowed to rent.
>>21484901938 and never heartd or seen of this. I did have the coneheads VHS and enjoyed it. Later as a teen I found out they were a SNL skit that got a movie, like Wayne's world
>>214849376All I can imagine for this is Indians coming out of the walls and sewage drains moain "Please saar, do the needful things"
>>214849291In the sense that-
>>214849663Yeah, as an adult I realised it wasn't Beetlejuice tier, it was just some trash I rented a lot as a kid that no one ever heard of. The memory of it was much more impressive than the actual product.
Breaking the rules a bit, but the album covers skits they filmed. Never even listened to it, but the cover was unforgettable to me. One of the very first times I looked at something and felt I shouldn't be seeing it.

>>214849547Another time, when I was 4 or 5, I was at McDonalds with my grandparents. After we ate my grandpa gave me some money to go get an ice cream; big kid stuff, ordering all by myself. When it was my turn an obese woman behind me in line pushed me up against the counter with her gut and just started saying her order. I had no clue what the fuck was happening so I just squeezed out and went back to my grandparents with no ice cream.

Interesting cover, but a boring movie. In it's defense, I haven't seen it in over 30 years.
>>214850539I feel because the posters are decided by managers nowLike most of the MCU posters, it's clear that managers fight for shit like "10% bigger headshot" I know it's nothing new, Drew Struzan had issues where actors complained about how they were presented in the poster, but I feel it has gotten worse since the 2010s
>>214850279I remember seeing him on E! back in the day and he was kind of douchey. He had a tough guy persona but he was short and chubby. They were on that travel show with Jules Asner/Brooke Burke. >>214850693yikez! that cover spoils some of the best scenes, thought it was kinda funny, not at all boring, solid effects, streep was great, meta-commentary on the vainess of hollywood (imagine the bogg-pilled actresses doing that kind of a thing now)
>>214850767I self-owned by accidentally erasing a number in the post to which I replied and writing the wrong one in. I literally linked to an incel post, lol.

>>214847406Him swallowing the cats funny though
>>214850910>Too bad the ending was spoiled in the trailerThe ending was obvious if you've ever seen a horror anthology. I liked the story about the funeral director who cuts off the basketball player's feet to make him fit in the coffin.
>>214849327I had a good time with this movie, she was a lot hotter in her prime than I expected and decent acting
>>214850893I always really liked that movie. It was one of those random gift VHS tapes I got for Christmas as a kid and ended up really enjoying it. One of my first faps was to Isabella Rossellini('s body double Catherine Bell) when she walks naked out of the pool.
