Are you kidding me? This is supposed to be better than Citizen Kane? Literally NOTHING HAPPENS.
Yeah, /tv/ tricked me into watching it, too. It's shit
it's le sad when granny dies :(
>>214872981It's not better than Citizen Kane but the Ozu's aesthetic was incredibly mature for its time
Not even top 5 Ozu
>>214873070Correct his best movies were released either in the 30s, or in the 60s in color
>>214872981It's called Tokyo Story. Why would you expect it to be anything decent?
>>214872981deep feeling and honesty, not flashy pronouncements, are what make art and relationships meaningful.
>>214873070can you name themfrom ozu I think I only watched tokyo story, late spring and late autumn. What should I watch next from him?
>>214873553An Autumn Afternoon is very good, it's his last movie. The only son is also pretty good.
>>214872981the film that genuinely solved the art of cinema. everything that came ever since has been merely a side note>>214873003>>214873005>>214873054>>214873111>>214873159filtered
>>214872981Watch it again in ten years, kiddo. You’re clearly way too young to understand it
>>214874241Saying Tokyo Story is the best movie of all time is like saying the Mona Lisa is the best painting of all time lmao. Please stop using watchmojo top 10 videos as source for your knowledge

i liked an autumn afternoon better but it's been many years since i saw his movies
>Late SpringOlder, reluctant woman finally marrying because she can't live with her widower dad forever.>Early AutumnYounger woman marrying a childhood friend who she adores instead of a wiser choice selected by her parents.I understand the title of the first kino, but not the second. Sure it's derogatory to call someone an "Autumn" when they're 25, but the character is clearly of prime marriagable age unlike the first example. Can someone explain?>Tokyo StoruParents visit kids in the city, but their kids are too busy to entertain them and constantly complain about being put out. Their MIA soldier boy's widow actually takes time off work to show them a good time. When mother gets sick and dies, her kids unceremoniously come to collect the expensive kimonos. Obviously, the leading lady is the nobler character, but I didn't like her justifying their kids' selfish behavior.I love Ozu's comfy, quiet kinos. They are a nice departure from the depressing melodrama of Mizoguchi where a woman inevitably descends into shame, which I find in part fetishised, in part giving awareness to their historical lot in life. Everyone should watch the old masters to really grasp the sheer magnificence that Kurosawa would later bring to the fold.
>>214874290It's directors saying it
>>214872981You're too low iq to get it.
I'm sure it's a fantastic movie for circlejerking with other rich hollywood jews about how much smarter and more refined you are than the people who watch the movies that you yourself make
>>214874767It is, but it's also authentically kino and based. Too old and boring for even the most pretentious film student/femoid
