I am not a fan of 80-90s episodes overall but some of them i enjoy and it is very enjoyable to see him being even more cunning and showing his experience here.

The best episodes tend to have the best guest villains.
I like to enjoy it through the lens of watching said villains be tortured and broken down by the big C
But theres also a couple of great sympathetic villains and the relationship that forms between them and Columbo can just be very compelling.
I ask you try again. You may just need more time to get used to the 70s tv style and pacing.

I like the running gag that he's constantly hungry and on the prowl for free food. I think there's an episode where Columbo steals some bread rolls from nuns running a soup kitchen.

That episode also had a couple minor but notable guest stars including France Nguyen and Mako. France was in a handful of small things in the 70s and 80s and Mako I at least remember from an episode of MASH as a Chinese or North Korean doctor in a patient exchange episode. They were scraping the D-list barrel except for the guy who played Frank Pantangele. I forget the name of the guy who played the murdered but he did a good job, also Shera Denise playing the murderers girlfriend is worth noting. God bless Peter Falk, he should not have let his wife have so much screen time, she is terrible.

That and one other episode were based off Philip Marlowe novels I believe, the tone is way off. It’s engaging because Columbo is personally invested since it’s family, but the scene with the lipstick is horribly stupid and the “villain” is just a bag of late 80s/early 90s cliches.
I watched last salute today and Robert Vaughn tries his best to save it but the gotcha is so bad it hurts. To note, Columbos young assistant/coworker also had a bit part in MASH as colonel potters son in law. Lots of cross pollination between the two shows, strangely enough.
