Who is this for?
>Zoomers didn't grow up on Simpsons
>Millennials are too jaded and poor, and the Simpsons have been down hill since they've watched
>Boomers are dying
>Simpsons Movie 1 is closer to the start of the series than it is to it's Sequel
>The main cast sounds like they're literally dying
>Some of the main VA's, have in fact, died
>Writing has been piss poor, and it's still 2 years out
>More will probably die in 2027

As a millennial, even I saw hate for this show. It was always the same complaints, it wasnt really funny, kind of boring, a bit daunting, and hard to watch. I tried, but it did nothing for me, I just turned to it Bevis and butthead when I wanted to laugh at something as a kid.

Disney just wants to keep the Simpsons brand in the public eye. All this talk about another movie made me go back and rewatch a couple of episodes from season one. The art is charming shitty but the writing is still charming.

The Simpsons was already dead to me before the first movie even came out. I only ever saw it years after the fact out of morbid curiosity.

I think I only enjoyed 2 jokes from it, Spider pig and GTA Walrus, I remember the movie, but only ever watched it once, even mom and dad thought it was the quality of an ok episode.
It really boggles me that they rewrote the script multiple times, is not like comedy was or is dead.

It’s become obsessed with referencing memes from 90’s episodes to stay relevant. Modern Simpsons writers only have The Simpsons as a touchpoint. They didn’t grow up reading the and watching classics like 90’s Simpsons writers did.

If Matt wants The Simpsons to compete with South Park, it has to be as loud as South Park. We’re in the attention economy now. And attention needs to be earned.
>>
>>214922928
They're not wondering. they don't give a shit.
one reason they keep sticking to IPs is its a perfect excuse for execs to shit out a movie while they pocket most of the budget money. Even if it flops they can say it was based on an existing IP, not their fault.

I also believe they're trying to tank these studios so foreigner investors can snap em up cheap. The same way they're intentionally trashing everything else so it can be rebought by outside investors

This has been in development for like 10+ years there are old tweets from the writers talking about it, it will almost certainly suck ass but it's something the writers have wanted to make basically since the first one. >>
>>214922729
My guess is that they will use this movie to pivot away from the main cast or at the very least permanently age everyone up so they can retire Marge from the show.

In the first case I could see them rebranding the show as 'Springfield' for seasons 39 and 40 With more emphasis on the secondary characters ala 22 short films about springfield to try and give the show more life and ending it at 40 if it's unsuccessful.

They have been doing more and more 'in the future' episodes so they could pivot towards 'aging bart and lisa to adults and making them the focus characters' whilst sidelining homer and writinf out marge before julie kavner dies and having a couple of seasons with the new status quo to see of it works out.

Simpsons has weird timing and things drag in a way that modern shows don't do. And every comedic character has a silly voice which is a staple of the past. The only good silly voices were Krusty and Apu, and they killed the second one. Whenever they reference something it's years past its relevance

I've read the script. The entire movie is about marge not letting homer go to epstein island with carl and lenny, so he sneaks on to a private jet behind her back. After the jet lands homers unpacking in his room and it turns out bart snuck into homers luggage when he wasn't looking. The rest of the movie basically revolves around homer trying to find a way off of epstein island while doing everything he can to keep bart from being molested by various celebrities and politicians.
>>
>>214932259
I think they should expand the guest couch gags concept, and make a whole show like that. Just bring on guest directors and animators, and let them them do their version for an episode. It's about the only thing that would make me pay attention at this point.
>>
>>214931120
This is my problem with the show desu. Its dna is so thoroughly anachronistic from the references (Dr Hibbert, Grandpa being a war hero, Skinner's PTSD), to the organisation of the characters (the family still watching tv, arcades, Bart pulling pranks and being disaffected when he'd be a conservative grind setter to rebel today)

Even the idea it isn't a sequential story but rather a resetting loop means the meta structure of the show screams last gen.

Just aging the characters up like some people suggest misses the point.

Seasons 1&2 are kinda hard to watch for me. I’m a massive Simpsons fan and most of my childhood was planned around when KotH and Simpsons would air on Fox.
>Seasons 1&2
Lost of sappy “heartwarming family sitcom” moments. I didn’t care much for this. DESU, I’ve only sat through them once…
>season 3
Gets better, VA work gets less wonky too.
>Seasons 4 through 10
Peak Simpsons
>Seasons 11 through 16
Gradually gets worse, season 16 felt very “family guy” to me. 11 through 13 are solid, but it starts to get shitty. This was also when the guest stars became more common.
>Simpsons Movie
Saw it in theaters, it was okay. Just not that funny and felt like a drawn out episode with the stakes heightened.
>post season 17
I would catch an episode here and there but they were pretty bad. I know a lot of anons hate anything post season 10, but I still think up to at least season 12 is good. It nosedives after that in writing quality.

I watched Simpsons in the 90's when I was a kid, it probably peaked for me in early 2000's with Hit and Run & Road Rage games. I was done with it YEARS before the movie came out in 2007, which I thought the franchise was already dying by then as other shows like Futurama, Family Guy, etc were more interesting to me.

Cannot believe this show is still on the air and they're thinking about a sequel movie. Still haven't seen the first one.

I remember the advertising "The movie that's TEN YEARS IN THE MAKING!"
I was mad hyped at the time, and I considered it (still consider it?) one of the best movies I've ever seen, to the point of putting it on a pedestal and not rewatching it unless it's a special occasion. I haven't had a special occasion, so it still holds that top stop for me.

I have a coworker who's born in 2005. He's been watching alot of The Simpsons, and even likes the new shit. He also like the Star Wars sequel trilogy, and has written video essays on them. I will not embarass this man by posting them here, so feel free to accuse me of making him up.

>Has new Simpsons been good at any point or has it been consistently shit?
I don't think it would really matter if it "got good again" because I don't think it's possible to enjoy a show with a non-aging cast of characters over the course of so many decades. I tried watching the latest season of Simpsons a few years ago. I vaguely remember it being about a black teacher at the school or something. Nothing about it was terrible, but nothing about it was terribly great. It's just impossible to care about the emotional moments without being distracted by the fact that all these characters are the same age and will never ever grow up.

I watched a different episode at another time, where Homer tried to impress people with the idea of countering free library shelfs in the outdoors by making a single building that's a library and everyone laughed at how stupid he was and he was ashamed, and I was just thinking this can't possibly be the first time Homer has been shamed for his stupidity? Maybe cramming the metal crown back up his nose to get stupid again wasn't a good idea.

Do you think the The Simpsons Movie would have been more well received and loved if they went with their original plan of having Hank Scorpio be the main villain?

Depends on the plot. I always thought it was a shame they didn't make his breakaway republic canon on the show.
The movie should have been the nation of Scorpia now encroaching on Springfield's borders and it becomes the site of the latest flare up of the US vs Scorpia war.
>>
>>214934466
It's canon in the comics.
>>
>>214934479
Huh. No shit. How much detail do they go into?
>>
>>214934534
It was ages since I read the comics but Hank Scorpio appeared in several issues and the first time he appeared in the comics the Simpsons got thrown into a prison cell with him and they mentioned it there iirc

It was. The drop off was right when those other shows premiered. Many anons will not admit it here but early FG was a breath of fresh air when the Simpsons started to get stale fast.

This is the last chance they have to end the show that is in any way organic instead of being forced to abruptly stop because one of the voice actors dies.

Naturally I highly doubt they will do this.

I stopped watching 20 years ago and have only seen a couple of the worst meme episodes like the lady gaga episode and the gamergate episode since then. Have they actually introduced any new recurring gag characters since then or are they still trying to coast off the increasingly shorter list of classic characters with dead VAs?
