The films before 2 were largely just comedy that didn't take itself seriously at all. 2 introduced an actual protagonist and characters to care about, but they prevailed. 3 is largely just about how fucked up those characters have become and then the brother gets killed off-screen and things end on a depressing note.

But then again, this is the third movie in the franchise (or fourth counting AHE), and very few series manage to keep the fire burning this long. That sense of shock and wow factor is fading; it doesn’t feel like a slasher milestone anymore. Honestly, it reminds me of how Halloween started losing its edge. I just really hope part four doesn’t go completely off the rails and that the story can finish strong instead of fizzling out.
