>Trick or Treat (1952)
>It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown (1966)
>Halloween (1977)
>Garfield's Halloween Adventure (1985)

ok I was watching Dawn of the Dead, and I got two versions - original and Argento. The Argento file was fucked up though so I switched to theatrical. But comparing them the Argento one was so kino in comparison I can't go on and am gonna postpone watching it till I get a version that works.

As far as essentials go for a newcomer, we should limit one per sub genre. It's for Halloween remember, not horror in general. So for example, we already have Halloween on there for slashers, so why add Elm Street or Chainsaw Massacre? As far as vampires, Fright Night or The Lost Boys? Werewolf in London seems pretty essential, though.

The dialogue and characters are much better, and the themes are more thought-provoking and timeless. Dawn feels much more specific to its era of pop culture with its anti-consumerism message, which is probably why it maintained that initial popularity over Day, but Day's expression of the personal reactions of different kinds of people on a hopeless situation has a lot more substance than anything presented in Dawn.

Update:

>The Legend of Sleepy Hollow (1949)
>It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown (1966)
>Halloween (1977)
>An American Werewolf in London (1981)
>The Return of the Living Dead (1985)
>Fright Night (1985)
>Garfield's Halloween Adventure (1985)
>Evil Dead II (1987)
>Ernest Scared Stupid (1991)
>Hocus Pocus (1993)
>The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)
>Monster House (2006)
>Trick 'r Treat (2007)

This is more balanced imo. You have a werewolf film, a slasher, vampire, witch, and zombie film.
>>
>>214964313
Me too
>>
>symbolically castrates the man
>literally penetrates him
>theres still a wage gap 40 years later
overall i enjoyed Slumber Party Massacre (1982). i dont rate it that highly but its got the right moves. the killer is somewhat uninspired, but that might be because i watched Driller Killer (1979) right before this. even so, the weapon of choice was far more symbolic than the driller killers, including shots of him gently stroking the handle, lubricated with the blood of women. Despite being written and directed by a feminist, it still does what it can to appeal to the male gaze, making this a fairly balanced ordeal in terms of what type of audience its seeking. i really wanted more of diane (the qt in the red striped shirt), almost wanted her to be the FG but Valerie is the much bette choice. she even has the feminine/masculine name. One tiny detail i really liked is early on someone enters the home and the open windoes curtains shift from the change in pressure, leading to some dramatic irony. Theres a lot of twists aswell, making for a sense of bewilderment.
>>
>>214964373
>being written and directed by a feminist
thanks now i know to avoid it
>>
>>214964410
>>214964373
the unique thing about the film is Roger Corman stepped in and balanced the film perfectly. there's almost surreal feminist elements (like the female electrician) and then tits galore.
kino film, more female directed films should be thwarted and fixed like this.

>>214964410
hey, serious question, like i really want you to answer, what makes you think the slasher genre as a whole isnt feminist? the killer is practically always a man who kills by penetrating, thwarted by a woman who becomes more boyish through the movie, her thwarting is always an emasculation of the man and the concept of machismo is almost a silver bullet for your own death.

holy based, never thought I'd see Roky in a /tv/ thread

guy's a genius. he and the 13th floor elevators were awesome. later, after he lost his mind and got out of the mental ward, he was even better with the aliens, and others. the misfits literally ripped off his horror rock genre and made a career out of it. he had insane lyrics. two-headed dog, and click your fingers applauding the play, burn the flames, cold night for alligators. crazy shit. burn the flames was on the night of the living dead OST.

his poetry was creepy as shit, too. raised by a mentally ill mother in a slummy hoarder house. no wonder he went nuts.

his love songs were good, too. sad, confused life. RIP Roky.

Haven't seen Chime. Cloud is strictly a thriller tho, but by nature Kurosawa adds his spooky touch to it.

I need to take a break from these non Argento/Fulci Italian flicks. They are getting weirder the more I watch them. Just watched the House of Witchcraft and Ratman was recommended afterwards.

>This movie isnt very good so far
I used to think that but it has grown on me considerably.

Pros!
> Despite the comedic elements elsewhere in the film the final showdown from when Thorn climbs upstairs onward is a truly brutal as fuck fight to the death.
> The female cast is all largely fairly likable aside from Diane but even she isn't a bitchy caricature.
> Valerie fits the Laurie Strode final girl mold closest but in terms of screen time Trish is just as much of a main character
> Tons of nudity.
> The film treats the male nerds with nuance & respect showing that despite them perving on the girls they also voluntarily end up sacrificing themselves trying to get help & one of them goes down fighting hard. The film also gives them a valid logical reason for splitting up although it still backfires badly.
> Score is decent & fairly different from the Halloween/F13 theme mold.

Mixed Elements!
> Russ Thorn is a very different slasher than the iconic Michael Myers/Jason Voorhees mold, much more of a everyday, in plain sight type of human lunatic. At times his menace is diminished as a result of that realism such as his fun cowardly reaction to Valerie emerging from the basement with a epic machete. The actor gives a good slimy, sleazy performance without going too over the top.

Cons!
> The way the sound editing is done it makes it look like Valerie is outright ignoring Neil's calls for help at the door instead of only barely hearing them because her TV is so loud which was clearly the intention of the scene.
