Did that whole movie take place on Liberty Island?
>>
Yes. The monkeys were a subtle allegory for, you guessed it: Italians.
>>
One can imagine the statue was moved during some dystopian future, and we're seeing the remains buried up to the waist in sand due to rising sea levels.

Or the more based option, nuclear war blew it all up!

I just watched this movi3 for the first time. What a lovely piece of art. It must have been so amazing to see this back when it came out. The build up in the beginning along with the banter between characters was so foreign in how minimalist the approach was. I loved it.
>>
The force of the nuke clearly broke the Statue of Liberty, knocking it into the ocean and it drifted until it crashed into the mainland.
>>
Taylor's villainous turn in the ending of the second entry is maybe the biggest character shift in all of film.

Theories

>The land was filled in sometime before the fall of mankind
>through a freak accident of physics, half or more of the statue was blown intact across the bay onto the coastline by powerful bomb
>it's not the original Statue of Liberty, and is something like a tourist attraction replica from ages ago that has somehow washed up intact on the coastline
>it was some kind of art installation from old world, avant-garde for it's time as a representation of rising sea levels
