Why did Temple of Doom age so poorly in comparison to Raiders, which was made 3 years earlier?

The tone is different. I didn't mind it at all when u was a kid, temple was my favorite. Now as an adult I cant get past the first 30mins, even though I'm sure the second half of the movie is probably better

For me it felt campier, grosser, gruesome, less compelling. The "mystic Nazi ghost story" theme/aesthetics of 1 and 3 were more interesting and less repulsive.

I liked the monkey brain stuff. This film captures the exotic of India with only a hint of exploitation. More exploitation, the better.

In contrast I think Raiders suffers because it's solid, but too many people have ripped it off over time so it feels played out through no fault of it's own. Raiders is overhyped and Last Crusade is underrated
