The mythology is actually great but falls apart after season 5 because Chris Carter never really had a plan where to take it all. I think they were pressuring him to keep the show going, too, so he (quite literally) set the mythology arc on fire but had to return to it periodically. Then Duchovny got tired of doing the show, left, then came back for a very mediocre series finale which is then completely undone by the new seasons.
