Overall, I think the ASoIaF series struggles with character development. Either the character doesn't learn anything from their journey and remains the same by the end as they started, but now have nothing to do and just exist OR the character needs to be rapidly transformed into something else for the sake of plot convenience.There is an illusion of gradual development with characters like Jaime but the show explicitly has him monologue at the end that he has learned nothing from his travels.
