Just watched this for the very first time and seems like a decent number of people online dislike it for the sole reason of not understanding it.
Have these people just never been in love or am I the idiot for propping up this film on a pedestal just because it's a little artsy?

I haven't watched that movie in a while. Is that image (popular as it is) even in the movie? I remember something similar happening but the lady wasn't dressed like that in that scene.

there are a lot of movies like this around hong kong, taiwan etc. you're watching the normie version of the genre, it goes a lot deeper.

for some reasons asians love romance, missed connections, wholesome cyberpunk, pointless slice of life.

It is not. I just picked out a random high-res photo from Google images desu,
The only people who kneel down on that escalator to look into the apartment are the flight attendant (to say goodbye to Cop 663) and Cop 663 when he hears Faye yell out from his apartment.

>some Aussie bloke from Sydney decides to fuck off and travel the world in the 70s at 18
>works in oil drilling in India, cow herding in Israel, and as a doctor of Chinese medicine in Thailand before settling in Taiwan and becoming a photographer, then, cinematographer
>proceeds to become the cinematographer for Wong Kar-Wai's most iconic films
What the fuck? This is the kind of life you cannot possibly have anymore. Fuck this world. Boomers had it so easy, they could find a career just based on a handshake.

>Christopher Doyle's first film was the 1983 Taiwanese film That Day, On the Beach, directed by Edward Yang. Despite having no prior experience with 35mm film or lighting, Doyle took on the role of cinematographer because his girlfriend, Sylvia Chang, who was an actress and had a connection to the film company, convinced the studio to hire him.
