Suriyothai (2001) depicts the 16th century ruined Kingdom of Ayutthaya, which later became Siam. During this period, there were 2 city states that encompassed Siam (Ayutthaya and Pitsanulok). This film takes place over a score of years where the Kingdom saw many invasions from the neighboring Honsawadi (Ancient Burma).

The film features full scale outdoor sets, real temples, throne rooms, ancient palaces, and massive scenes with thousands of extras on camera in a scale not seen since Lawrence of Arabia. It was funded by the Thai royal crown, allowing them access to royal palaces and relics. It was directed by a Thai prince who went to film school with Francis Ford Coppola. Coppola later re-edited the film, trimming 3 hours from its runtime, changed its name, added his own name to the title and ruined it. It took 6 years to film. They conscripted 20,000 soldiers to play the extras, used 350 elephants, etc.

This is the never before ripped non-export edition of Suriyothai that I recently bought. I have painstakingly and professionally re-written the entire English subtitle sourced from the export DVD, all 3,000 lines of dialog. Beforehand, the previous hard subtitle packaged with the export DVD was completely botched, with improper grammar, misspellings, mis-translations, and even several scenes without subtitle at all. I worked through the subtitle top to bottom. I believe you all will be pleased with the result.

No western media has ever reviewed the original Thai cut so don’t even reference that shit. They have only seen Coppola’s 2 hour cut. Plus they were retards in 2001 anyway. I have contacted Arrow, Kino Lorber, Criterion, and just about everyone else about remastering this film in its full 5-hour long glory.

Special thank you to Okron who reviewed the 5 hour film on letterboxed. I'm glad you enjoyed the film...

A note on the 'elephant CGI', I think what you are referring to are the composite shots. They probably used green screen on the elephants when they yanked them down. It's not CGI but practical effects. Again, thanks for the honest review!

Hello anon
>>
>>215017351
Hey anon! Per your request I uploaded the JSON file (subtitledit) raw file to the gofile, and the latest VOB. The 1 song is still untranslated which I need to do. My wife and I are going to the bank real fast. After that i'll be back to take more looks at the sub. I also want to clarify the title of the second king Chan which is 'uparat' or uparaja (meaning vice-roy) but direct translation is second king.

the joke is thailand made up its history to avoid being colonized. none of it actually happened.

Nobody gives a fuck schizo. Not to mention this is completely false since France and Portuguese had emissarys and ambassadors in ayutthaya since the 16th century and their accounts are clear. Ayutthaya was a “terrible spectacle” and “one of the 3 great powers of Asia” according to European emissaries. We have paintings of it. Drawings. And finally the ruins and relics. A kingdom that was destroyed does not make it cease to exist. Burmese accounts share the same story.

Thanks anon, I'll give it a watch!

There's a subtitle error about 4H12 min or around there. It's minor like a space or something.

As for discussion, the action scenes vary but there are some very kino moments like when the blackface assassins come. The random white person is a neat touch which is something I don't think you would see in a Kurosawa. That being said I argue the battles and action rivals Kurosawa but I haven't seen all his filmography. The elephant duel scenes are ok but I felt they were too careful and you can see everyone trying to act steady on them vs when they fired cannons off those lugs.

I would have liked to care more about the characters, like some of the palace guards, merchants or maidens and like other I felt Suri was underutilized after she shone bright in the opening. I would have liked to see her breasts too but the way they displayed breasts seemed very correct (high consort, prostitutes only) it really helped shape that class structure. Also big shout out to the girl who flips the golden fan around in the palace.

Thanks for the little review. Feel free to give it a review or shout out on letterboxed or IMDB. I am looking for your error now but haven't found it yet!
>blackface assassins
yeah, one of the many scenes that aren't present in the 'coppola' cut. It's insane how much kino they removed.

Buddy you aren’t ever going to convince anyone of your schizo theory while providing zero evidence to debunk standing history. I’ve visited and walked the ruins of Ayutthaya myself on my trip to SEA. No poor or uncultured civilization could have built such magnificent structures and temples, especially ones that survived multiple attacks and eventually destruction. This is like claiming the empire of Angkor didn’t exist because anon said so.

What do you stand to gain for arguing in my thread of a Thai film, about India of all things? China had far more of an influence on Thailand than India ever did. China even considered Ayutthaya one of its vassal states at one point.

I will watch

I'm about to upload a slightly improved subtitle if you wanna wait a bit.
>>
I'll use the id numbers in the json to mark my suggestions
>13
should have a comma after Rat instead of a period
>21
should have a comma after Praruang
>22
should read "who came to savour" or "who was savouring"
>37
should have an exclamation instead of a period after bored
>44/45
I would move 'Your Highness' from 44 to 45, so 45 reads "Your Highness, this is not a good idea."
>57
would add a comma after sake
>71
should end in ellipsis like 70
>72
then, if 71 ends in ellipsis, 72 should start with a lowercase instead of a capital
>97
should have a comma after inside
>102/104
if 'The Princess' should be capitalized, then 'Crown Prince' should also be capitalized
>104
consider ending with an exclamation instead of a period
>110
if we're using UK instead of US spelling (like with 'savour' in 22), then 'honor' should be 'honour' instead
>120
should have an exclamation after 'No' instead of a period
>127/128
as 102/104, capitalization of Crown Prince
>137
should read 'One of the daughters' instead of 'One of daughters'
>148
should have a comma after king
>154
should have a comma after Ayothaya

Will do more later
