What happened to western animation

No one cared about treasure planet or Atlantis, both were flops. Not really hard to understand. Maybe you should’ve watched it in theaters when it came out instead of now pretending that they’re masterpieces

Bad time for these. it was before the CGI backlash, so at that time people and kids especially loved 3D animation over this stuff because it was novel and just like in my video games. By kids I mean myself of course.
>>
It couldn't compete with 3D, which was new and exciting at the time. There were some cool blending of the two, though.

1998 answer by WB to the Disney Renaissance

It's weird how people keep jerking off these periods of western animation. I mean, I grew up with that shit, including the 90s stuff, and it didn't feel right. I didn't outright dislike it (at least not until the late 90s), but you could feel it was "modern", and it looked too artificial and like everything was made out of plastic. A lot of the human designs were also outright disgusting, with ridiculously ugly faces and sloped foreheads (The Prince of Egypt is a prime example), and everything was ridiculously melodramatic and over-emoted by the early 2000s.
That last point is a bit odd, considering cartoons are supposed to rely on expressive animation (because cartoons were originally only directed at kids, who needed things to be exaggerated to understand the emotions being expressed), but to me it ended up in a kind of uncanny valley, where they mixed weird, cartoony designs with semi-realistic, but still ridiculously over-emoted animations, which made it look like the characters were acting, rather than showing genuine emotion.
Of course, the latter problem has gotten significantly worse with 3D animation, but its roots can be found in the late 80s and the 90s. Anyway, all of this shit also coincided with third wave feminism, and it's obnoxious how many "strong" female characters started popping up, and how Disney increasingly shifted to almost exclusively cater to their female audience by the early 2000s, at least for animated features.

Amerifats can't keep costs under control, everything has to cost $200 million dollars and then make $500 million or more, and then if that happens the next one will cost $300 million.
>>
>>215018265
yeah there was a lot of spacefag slop around that time, probably why the studios died off.
>>
>>215017769
Why does Alice in Wonderland keep getting so many adaptations nowadays but not Treasure Island?
>>
>>215019581
Treasure Island could really have happened, so it would have to look realistic. Alice is pure fantasy, so it could look like anything.

high effort, low returns. The heads just want the check so that's how lowest common slop is "popular". Global connection made it that lowest effort/highest return point is falling, da joos are minmaxing the game.

Those 5 computer-animation movies by DreamWorks from 1998-2005 are just plain unforgettable
>>
Remember how the main selling point of CGI replacing 2D animation was that it would be cheaper? Why did Wish cost Disney $200M?
>>
The whole treasure planet and Atlantis is good meme needs to end
>>

Bitching about “third wave feminism” in the context of bitching about western animation is fairly hilarious.

Disney presented stories where the girl would be a beautiful princess who had to be saved by a great man. Very often the villain would be a representation of a mother hen, think cruella de vil or lady tremaine or Ursula. There’s a nonstop theme of old ugly fat ladies being jealous as hell over young beautiful poor girls.

Compare that to Sailor Moon and the fucking legions of girlboss characters in anime.
>>
People who say it's cost are wrong
Those movies were all around $100,000,000 to make
Disney/Pixar CGI slop nowadays all have budgets around $200,000,000 inflation hasn't doubled costs since 2000, only like 85%
So at best, the cost is the same

Why do people say The Prince of Egypt flopped? It grossed 101 million domestically. Same numbers as Hunchback of Notre Dame and Hercules.

Shareholder parasites and their kike lobbying groups have made every company a hostage to make profits over making anything good.
it's why stock buybacks are one of the things companies try to do most once they go big

Hunchback "broke even" with its budget of $100,000,000, meaning it lost money after marketing and the theaters' share
Hercules wasn't a big success either if I recall

>>215021224
What, are you retarded or something? The princess shit was the norm up until the 80s and into the 90s, then it started changing, and the focus shifted to "independent" women, while the men were gradually relegated to comic relief. At first the female characters usually still had to be rescued at one point by the male MC or the prince (if the female was the MC), but they had far more traits that are commonly pushed by feminists, usually being smarter than the goofy male characters and doing a lot of the work themselves. Eventually, the male characters were mostly written out, or served purely as comic relief or as a sidekick/romantic interest, with the female characters being warriors going through the traditional male hero's journey. Even when you did have male characters post the early 2000s, it was always a goofy, insecure loser.

>Compare that to Sailor Moon and the fucking legions of girlboss characters in anime.
Who's talking about anime? Sailor Moon is a pretty bad example, considering it's just generic mahou shoujo, but yeah, it's absurd how awful anime has become in the past 20 years. Almost all the male characters are effeminate faggots, and the female characters tend to be the dominant ones, even in anime where the faggot males are still better fighters. Hell, half the shows have crossdressing or genderbending. It's absurd that anime became as woke as western shit, despite the lack of a far left political machine to push it in that direction.
It really speaks volumes about how pathetic japs have become, not to mention the western audience that made it mainstream in the past 10 years.
>>
All of these movies were immensely beautiful, I saw them all in cinemas as a kid.
The early 2000s was the last golden era before the MBAs took over and the business became about optimizing returns (to compete for capital against the successive tech bubbles).
Now it's not even that, as they have proven they can't compete (everyone with talent was fired to make way for Jeet slop and boomer talk shows).
Eventually a new indie scene will develop whether on steam or YouTube or whatever.
Things are good when people don't do them ONLY for money.

You all couldn't get enough of the farting ogre. That's what happened.

Yeah Toy Story made a billion dollars for half the price and a quarter of the man hours.

How come Japan gets away with tropes like women beating up men twice their size and sissy male protagonists? These are tropes that are jeered at as woke when Hollywood does it.
Anime also fucking normalizes the trend of weak men being irresistible for being nice and passive. That's how you get a generation of doormats who do nothing as women are attacked in public.

>How come Japan gets away with tropes like women beating up men twice their size and sissy male protagonists?
I would assume it's because it's not pushed for ideological reasons, and because the modern anime fanbase consists of mindbroken faggots and zoomers who have grown up with that shit.
It's like that dumb boiling frog apologue. Weebs have just gradually gotten used to being emasculated (as long as they get to fap to it), and the fanbase has become increasingly filled with faggots and betas. It wasn't as sudden as the shift in the west, which was actively pushed by journalists, feminists and other subversive scum.

Or maybe it's just that failed beta men are willing to accept anything, as long as there's a sexual aspect to it. As weak and pathetic as the japs are, they never abandoned the fanservice.

They're still asking $30 for the blu-ray here lol, so maybe they're still hoping to turn a profit out of it.

Uhm sweaty, how is that supposed to compete with the best animation of 2025?
>>
>>215021794
because the girls are hot and you're supposed to think the fags are fags, not that all men are fags and all women are that strong.
>>
>>215022972
>and you're supposed to think the fags are fags
No, you're not. The fags are the self-inserts or fujo bait.
>>
One of the weakest DreamWorks movies, one of the weakest John Logan scripts, and one of the weakest combinations of 2D and CGI

>no major hand-drawn animations
>everything is digital and looks like shit
>cgi everywhere
It is the dark times of mutt cinema.
>>
>>215024906
It's not dark, it's dead.
And it's not just mutt animation, it's all animation. The japs and gooks are bigger fags than the mutts by their very nature, and the chinks are cancer incarnate. And the frogs? Somehow they decided to compete for the title of the most degenerate faggots of all time with their revolting lol cartoon, and I think they succeeded.
