because its made up for the lynch movie and most of the shit in it is either explained in other parts of the story anyway or invents fairly pointless details like the navigators wanting Paul dead even though the baron's and emperor's plan hinges on that as well. Its like showing up and hearing someone is planning on robbing a bank and then telling them to take all the money while they're robbing the place.

Maybe Dunc part three will further clarify how its version of the heighliner is physically present in two places simultaneously and lets ships pass through it from one destination to the next, unlike the Lynch version where the ships are transported within the heighliner which then folds space to the destination.

>Dune
>A person mutated into a worm that just sits in a tank of drugs and gets wheeled around to calculate folding space warp methods for their ships
>Their ships are gay sterile triangles and squares with checker patterns, and the worst weapons they have are nukes

>40K
>Choir of hundreds of blind people who dug out their own eyes that get consumed by demons everytime the ship needs to long-range communicate, or properly communicate with their own ship's "spirit"
>Said choir are commanded by a mutant with a third eye to randomly pop like grapes or turn into monsters everytime the third eye mutant sends the ship into warp travel, and anyone who questions anything done by either group is considered a heretic and demon lover who is burnt alive on the spot with flame throwers
>Ships are massive cathedrals housing hundreds of thousands to hundreds of millions of people who live and die for thousands of generations, who think the smell of diesel is fresh air, that metal surfaces are like soft soil, and have only ever eaten the recycled remains of other humans that was cooked 500 years ago

Why is 40K so much better than its "inspiration"? Everytime you hear something in 40K you want to explore it further... Everytime you hear something in Dune you just imagine a 60 year old gay man writing it as he licks the cum off his lips.

It's in the Schools of Dune trilogy where it happens. Pretty good reads if you need more Dune. That Dune Prophecy show was loosely based around the events of Sisterhood of Dune in the trilogy.
>>
>>215031469
The novel is just a cluster fuck of "maintain the status quo bro":
>GUILD have a monopoly on all space travel but need the SPICE.
>The SPICE is mined by CHOAM. (SMUGGLERS also supply some SPICE.)
>CHOAM is majority owned by the EMPEROR and minority owned by the MAJOR HOUSES.
>The GUILD and BENE GESSERIT are silent partners in CHOAM.
>The EMPEROR has best troops the SARDAUKAR and gifts fiefs like DUNE to other MAJOR HOUSES rather than directly taking control, because being directly in control would be seen as a monopolisation of power, it also gives him a buffer in the administration of DUNE.
>The MAJOR HOUSES exist in the LANDSRAAD to vote and talk about matters and also together they can push back against any overreach by the EMPEROR.
>The BENE GESSERIT manipulate the political situation behind the scenes for their own bloodlines goal but also maintain the rise and fall of HOUSES in the status quo.
>ATREIDES got too popular in the LANDSRAAD and the EMPEROR conspired to kill them because muh status quo.

I was not a fan of the two sequel books he did and couldn't get into the butlerian jihad trilogy, but every other trilogy I've read so far has been really enjoyable. The prelude trilogy was probably my favorite, Hasimir Fenring is really fleshed out and such a good character.

>butlerian jihad trilogy
I've always wondered what the original intent was. I've only read the first three OG Dune novels. But the encyclopedia that Frank had a hand in writing made the Butlerian Jihad feel more about overcoming machines, AI, people using machines and not fighting in a Terminator style war against them. Is it ever clear what Frank's original intent was for the Jihad?
>>
>>215032490
I don't think he ever said, no. I seriously recommend reading God Emperor of Dune, it's my favorite of all of Frank's.
>>
>>215032490
It wasn't a terminator style war, it was destroying computers etc, a fanaticism sweeping everything. And he does describe it in the encyclopedia. It is Brian who makes it into a war against machines.

I hate that he did this so much. It's obvious that Brian watched The Terminator back in the day and thought, "Wow. A war against giant robot spiders would be so cool! I think my dad wrote something about a robot war too, I think." And then he wrote his fan fiction novels, and then Dune Prophecy cemented a war against giant robot spiders in the public conscious.
And the show (and the nufilms) did not have the balls to actually call it the "Butlerian Jihad." Instead, they call it "the machine war."
>>
>>215032490

Because with Warhammer nobody reads the actual books (which are formulaic slop) so you can make the setting sound cooler than it actually is through lore videos and other secondary material. Most of the ship cathedral stuff is additionally plagerized from nemesis the warlock and heavy metal magazine. When they actually do go into the warp in Warhammer stories it goes fine 90% of the time unless it's near the eye of terror.

You guys can laugh, but this is literally what Weirdingâ„¢ is in the books.
Lynch knew it wouldn't work on a film, so he turned it into a gun.
DUNC knew it wouldn't work on a film, so it was omitted entirely.
I'm fine with both SciFi's version of it and Lynch's change to a gun. DUNC removing it altogether is genuinely a problem for the story though. Literally the only reason why the Fremen were able to fight back and win was because Paul taught them the Way of Weirdingâ„¢, but in DUNC, Paul just "inspires" them and they win, I guess.

Had Paul just been "some fremen guy" the guild would've shown up and said they're happy everyone is free now and that because they helped so much they think its only fair that they become the exclusive buyer of spice from the fremen. The guild now control the entire universe through their monopoly on both spice and space travel.

>he returned for the be sequel
There's no point to a Dune sequel. The story doesn't go anywhere that's cinematic. It's why everyone only ever adapts the first book. And if they try, the sequels fail and are forgotten. Lynch made the right choice just putting an ending to cap off his movie even if it's silly in regards to the specifics of book Dune.

It's an innately middle-Cold-War book. Spice is oil. Space is oceans. Nukes are nukes. The sand planet is the middle east. The Fremen are whites with a Muslim aesthetic like Chechnya. Shields are there to abstract away the conventional armies to highlight the poles of atomic age strategy. The Bene Gesserit are probably Jews, or at least international old-money.

it will work anon they cannot have a backup its systemised to make sure nobody has total power
the balanceing of said system is MAD

thats the point

>1 spice makeing planet (if no space everything fails)
>1 transportation guild (will die without spice cannot own planets)
>1 priest class (cannot own priests or ships but are close to every single leader if you piss them off they will kill all the leaders)
>thousands of plantets that rely on spice (if you piss them off they stop working for you

so the spice planet can cripple the trade network and ruin the planets

the planets can stop tradeing and ruin the trade guild and the spice planet

you get the idea

only the bennie jesurits or whatever could survive the spice being cut off as they will have massive stockpiles

the navigators will also have stockpiles but they cannot get any more and use alot more so they would be crippled super fast and need to fight a ground war on the planet

the planets cant really do anything anyway maybe they can send armys to fight the war on dune but they are fucked

no backuplan exists because only 1 spice planet exists thats why an entire house that owns thousands of planets must give up everything in order to run the spice planet

the guild would never have directly taken over or even attempted some more measure of control than they had in the status quo prior to pauls ascension
you saw how people treated their relationship to the emperor, the sort of infighting that occurs when spice is involved
everyone is paranoid about everyone else and their possible plans to seize more power, the small houses want to become great houses, the great house lords want to become emperor, etc.
why would the guild, which has everything it wants and isnt suspected any more than anyone else by anyone else suddenly throw themselves into the limelight

being the foreign dictator's glow in the dark reptilian handler is much better than being the the dictator
>>
>>215040064
the conclusion is not that some AI would be helpful, its that foresight and responsibility are required to handle things like spice and thinking machines
they expand the reach of humanity, both in consciousness and space, but overreliance on them leads to complacency and the death of all growth and adaptation

there is nothing wrong with prescient space drugs or robots or genetic modification
the problem is failing how to see beyond them, each of them are good enough, but all of them limit humanity by preventing civilization from trying to find something better
this is the golden path

I can understand Fremen being the Alpha dog in Dune. They know the terrain, they know how to operate with the desert, they can force the enemy to not use shields, etc. But how the fuck did they manage to fuck up shit in the rest of the galaxy? How do they fight in marshes or cities or snowy montains they never stepped in? How do their religion and culture endure when they find their first river, untold riches flowing before them?

It's handwaved and makes little sense but if you want to try and imagine a universe where people accustomed to guerrilla warfare on a scorching hot planet can fight billions across all forms of terrain, utilising all forms of combat techniques, then just imagine it was mostly spice related. Spice enhanced warriors. Threat of stopping spice flowing onto worlds forcing their surrender, handicapping their functionalities.

I think Herbert, like Howard, just really romanticised the idea of people closer to nature - a more barbaric people - being tougher and more capable.

Paul's army has complete control over interstellar travel. He can pick every single battle and never has to worry about unannounced reinforcements showing up.

It'd be like fighting a country's military by at the start of the conflict, forcing them to hold their current positions, robbing them of any means of communicating with other bases and groups and so on. You'd be able to take the country with a fraction of their total force. Most would just surrender instantly.
