What are the best westerns? I'm pretty new to genre and need some recs.
i like the outlaw josey wales
>>215037765This is the GOAT right here. I've never seen a single other Western come close.
>>215037765Warlock
>>215037765Go by the directors>John Ford>Howard Hawks>Sergio Leone>Anthony Mann>Clint EastwoodAnd others
>>215037765Start off simply.
>>215037765High Noon makes chuds boil for some reason
>>215037773>Union badLmao watch some Fuller instead
>>215037765I would start with some of the more modern films like Dances with Wolves, Unforgiven, Open Range and the like then work your way backwards. People who recommend stuff like the Dollars trilogy to newcomers are making a mistake in my opinion as they are going to be an acquired taste to people who are used to newer films. Not to say these films aren't good or anything they just aren't appropriate for someone new to the genre.
>>215037922>they are going to be an acquired taste to people who are used to newer films.Absolute garbage tier opinion. That's like saying people addicted to tiktok should watch 10-minute youtube videos before starting watching films
>>215037765>old stuffGood Bad The UglyOnce Upon a Time in the West>90s Western revivalDances with WolvesUnforgivenTombstone (this one is quite campy)>00s and beyond3:10 to YumaTrue GritAssassination of Jesse James
>>215037922>Dances with Wolves, Sucks.>UnforgivenA movie based around subverting traditional western ideas is a terrible choice for a first western.
>>215037969>Absolute garbage tier opinion. That's like saying people addicted to tiktok should watch 10-minute youtube videos before starting watching filmsI got into westerns in the early 00's when the genre was largely dead in theaters and none of my peers were into them. I found, through personal experience, that showing them some of the newer films worked better than the older ones. If you think something like Stagecoach is going to keep the average zoomers attention (which I assume OP is, if not then I apologize OP) then you are out of your mind.
>>215037765Best soundtrack too
>death rides a horseIs this any good? I heard it inspired Kill Bill
>>215037765Start with the classical era: Ford, Hawkes, Mann, easy to find a good guide to it. You'll have "small" and generic westerns shot mostly in studios as well as epic ones. Then go to the Italians but not just the Leone, check Corbucci and such... Next the american revisionists like Peckinpah and don't forget the weird ones, Rancho Notorious by Fritz Lang, Ride the Whirlwind and the Shooting by Hellman, John McCabe by Altman or even Jeremiah Johnson. Bad day at Black Rock by Sturges is not set in Western times but it's great. Skip Josey Wales it's a meme and watch a good Ostern like White Sun of the Desert
>>215038132OP here. I'm 29 and I enjoy older films (often more than modern stuff). I'm also a horror fan so it'd be kind of weird if I didn't.
>>215038203Then I apologize for my assumptions. I have kids so I have the mindset of introducing older media to Zoomers and Alphas. You should do fine with the classics then.
>>215037765A classic.
>>215038332A bit goofy for a newcomer?
>>215038158Better than Kill Bill.
>>215038181>Skip Josey Wales it's a memeYou were doing so well
>>215037765Original 3:10 to Yuma StagecoachShaneTombstone
Rio BravoStagecoachThe Searchers
>>215038181>Skip Josey Wales it's a memeYou're a meme and a gay one at that
I've watched all the 'classic' westerns, but I always come back to this one. Near perfection. A finely-tuned pastiche of western kino.
>>215037778Uhhh spoilers?
>>215038413It's fun and light, not too bad for someone getting into them. You don't want to recommend High Plains Drifter right off the bat and leave him disappointed in everything else.
>>215038142This one first came to my attention for its influence on Tarantino's The Hateful 8.I loved The Hateful 8, but The Great Silence utterly mogs it to an unmerciful degree. It just goes so damn hard
Watch jubal too
>>215037778>This is the GOAT right here. I've never seen a single other Western come close.I found it on the dull side.
Hell for cowardsit even features a ghost rapist
>>215037765>John Ford>John Wayne>Monument ValleyHere it's the quintessential classic western movie.
Watch Red River and ignore the last 3 minutes. It's the greatest Western bar none.
>>215038734you mean High Plains Drifter

I hate Unforgiven.
>>215038549>>215038447What's the appeal besides "Union bad"?It starts as a gritty one but devolves into a stupid adventure with an even stupider standoff at the end...Run of the arrows or Rancho Notorious are superior if you deseperately needs a good southerner in your western.
>>215038657There's way better than the Eastwood westerns
>>215040040This anon does not endeavor to preserve
>>215039047Worst ending of all time. Real shame that it was one of the few movies where John Wayne actually put on a performance.
>>215037778/tv/ was full of absolute dogshit on this one. i will scathe and shit on this movie till the day I fucking die. it is shit. the pistol-whip was so comically ass it broke the entire immersion for me. i got about 1/3 through and found the film to just miserably and utterly fail to capture my attention in any meaningful way. it was a genuinely terrible film. the style and way the film is is so shit. it has no setup and no direction. the dialogue is so utterly annoying to listen to. whoever put the ensemble cast together is the most midwit casting director ever. utter failure of a movie and i'm pissed how much time i wasted on it. it looked really promising but /tv/ was wrong once again. TWBB and NFCOM stay winning. whoever reccomends this movie is a pseud.
Peak fun
My favorite westerns were Rio Bravo and El dorado. Someone recommend me more technicolor western kino.
>>215038142I liked this more than Django but they both were overated.
>>215039557Solid list, toss in Winchester 77, the Tin Star, Vera Cruz...
Top atmospheric kino
>>215037765>look at that castStart with this
Have a look at some of the cheap westerns that spawned from the 70sWhen there was nothing on, I watched a film called A Man Called Noon starring Richard Crenna. Watchable.
>>215037765
>>215043089Also another watchable one,A Reason to Live, a Reason to Die or it's called Massacre at Fort HolmanJames Coburn and Telly Savalas
>>215038332Good movie, hands-off sister Sarah is seethe-worthy.
>>215037765ZACHARIAH!
>>215041338
>>215043674
>>215039047What was wrong with the last three minutes?
>>215043697
The Wild BunchJohnny GuitarTGTBATUare my 3 favorites by a wide margin, then after those probably Rio Bravo, High Noon and The Great Silence.
>>215037848This one was a before and after. Still bangs. Absolute classic and elemental film.
After you've watched all Leone, watch this. He second unit directed many scenes here. It is an amazing movie. Often overlooked because it is a "comedy-drama".
>>215038142is that kinski?
>>215037765High Plains Drifter and Pale Rider are pretty cool
>>215038181>Bad day at Black RockI found this to be a total waste of time. Good performancr by the lead, but him being a super hero tier fighter took all the suspense out of the movie. Solve it with clever dialougue like your old busted hobbling character did for the good parts of the movie. Instantly went from dialogue heavy witty charm to wowie zowie, he can take on a whole town of men with karate!!
>>215044958Yes.
>>215037765Blazing Saddles
Fulciās Four of the Apocalypse
>>215037765good bad ugly
>>215042816Got any tobacco?
>>215037975this is a great startI would add:pale ridertwo mules for sister sarathe quick and the dead
>>215040726He was ashamed of his posting, his pretensions of taste and basedness; he was sorry about his jadedness, his autism, his inability to express what he now believed was the case - that he truly regretted provoking janny, that he missed Moot as much as anybody, and wished his departure hadn't been necessary.Even as he refreshed the catalog on the Montenegrian basket weaving imageboard, he knew that other anons avoided his bait threads whenever he started them. He received so few replies that he reacted to each thread deletion with no emotion except curiosity. He kept to his basement all day - flipping over image folders, looking at his destiny in every sneed and chuck. The janitor came up from /sp/ at 1PM on the 3rd. He had no grand scheme, no paycheck, no agreement with higher moderators. Nothing but a vague longing for hotpockets, and a generalized wish to do it for free. Janny would be ordered to explain his banning of the thread after a complaint filed in the feedback section, but after only five seconds of rumination the mods would pardon the janitor. There would be no eulogies for OP, no one would see his thread get deleted, no anons would complain to Hiro about him being banned, no shitposts would be written about him, no screencaps taken of him, no one would ever open up the archive to browse the threads he posted in. The thread would 404, and the janitor would laugh - but OP would only sit in his chair and look at his thread, the page being deleted right before his eyes before he could figure out the CAPTCHA.
I can't believe El Topo hasn't been mentioned yet. You gays aren't fun anymore.
>>215041541Dodge City
>>215037975>>old stufflol those are like mid-period. The Great Train Robbery was silent and the first movie to edit in multiple perspectives. nobody did it before because it was thought audiences would hate it because it would be too confusing.that's how old westerns are. movies had been in color for a couple of decades before GB&U and OUATITW came out.but I do agree they're great. all your recs are good. I'd add the original True Grit with John Wayne. he usually just plays himself and it's not very interesting but in TG he's great
>>215038332it's great
>>215042816I love Robert Mitchum in this
>>215037765I need to confess a /tv/ sin. I love westerns but I cannot fucking stand Howard Hawks movies.
>>215048367why
>>215037765Wild wild west
>>215048384They're tacky, boring. Sort of paint by the numbers westerns with the soul washed out.
>>215048608that's interesting. to me Rio Bravo was gripping, intelligent, and dripping with soul. he got real good performances out of Wayne
>>215037765Don't waste your time, watch Easterns instead.
>>215048708No thanks. I hate injuns.
>>215038181Best taste in this thread and actually knows what he's talking about. The Clint Eastwood directed westerns after he came back to America are very mediocre but everyone loves them because it's Clint.
>>215038332
A lot of great movies are listed. my old school fav has to be the wild bunch. new school is the aussie anti western the proposition. amazing cast. amazing soundtrack. those that doubt me suck cock by choice.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uutYyiJqmpQhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uutYyiJqmpQ
