>it's 1994
>the cold war is over and russia is open to the west now
>you make a film set in russia starring russian characters
>still hire germans and irishmen to play russian characters
Wtf?
>>
It was cheaper

>It was cheaper
How was it cheaper to hire industry stars who require millions of dollars in royalties over some literal whos from a country so impoverished at the time they'd literally work for peanuts?

It's almost like they had a resume, a catalog, a list of people they could immediately find, hire, and cooperate with who also spoke English and lived nearby filming sites.
Unlike "Russians."

>women having voting rights
>you need someone to fix your sink
>still hire men
Wtf?
>>

It's not the 60s anymore where a Russian living in the West was a White survivor of the Russian Civil War.

If you're gonna make a realistic movie set in Russia and not bother to actually hire actors who can speak Russian, then why should I watch your movie? Clearly you don't give a shit about its quality or immersion.

And your sink comparison doesn't make any sense either.
>>
They constantly hire scandinavians to play Russians. Viggo, skarsgard, dolph etc. Nobody wants to see real Russians. They're gross
>>
>>215038838
Why bother hiring professionals when your neighbor could perform surgery for a hundred bucks?
>>
>>215038988
>Nobody wants to see real Russians.
Then why do you keep writing stories involving them? Simply don't set your film in Russia or have Russian villains. That is if your not a low quality hack writer, of course.
>>
>>215038975
>And your sink comparison doesn't make any sense (to me).
Not surprising.

• War is over (no hard feelings!)
• Now everyone is equal and available (amirite!?!?)
• Still hire the most accessible person after researching availability and quality of work in the limited amount of time (i do it better, tho)
WTF?!?!?!?!?!??!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!??!?!?!?!?!??!?!?!

If you believe Russian actors are so hard to reach or worse than American or British actors, then why did you make a film that's 80% of the time set in Russia? Previous James Bond films managed to successfully retcon SMERSH into an international crime syndicate Spectre, and that was at the height of the Cold War in the 60s and 70s.
>>
>>215038785
Same reason they hired English actors for Chernobyl, western European accents are more pleasing to listen to than Russian ones. Personally I'd be perfectly fine with Russian accents but I'd be lying if I said I preferred them beyond being ethnically accurate.

You seemingly have no clue what the fuck you are talking about. The 90s in Russia were turbulent shitshow. Why would MGM dip into the scene where they had another coup and organized criminal gangs seizing industries left and right while gunning down each other on the street? Why would Americans care who played another "Russian"? When the fuck did they care?
>>

You have a wonderful argument. (I'm being sarcastic.)
Are you enjoying our conversation?
>>
>>215039123
They flew out German actors out of Germany to play in Western films for example. Criminals in Russia didn't hold up airports in the 90s, they were only attacking small businesses inside the country. What the fuck are YOU talking about?
>>
>>215039141
I accept your concession.
>>
>>215039151
>What the fuck are YOU talking about?
I'm talking about why they would fucking bother doing this if it doesn't matter for the audience. Where Russians being "unauthentic" ever impacted the movie? Why would they contract a no-name Russian actor nobody knows?
>>
>>215039182
>Where Russians being "unauthentic" ever impacted the movie?
Yes. I get that American audiences have no taste but it's exceedingly jarring to see someone that doesn't look or sound Russian at all play a Russian.

It's why The Americans on FX sucks. The main leads do not look or sound or act like Russians at all, which begs the question - why even write them as Russians in the first place?
>>
>>215038990
I’ll do it for $50
>>
>>215039104
Chernobyl works in this regard for two reasons:
1. The Russians in the series don't interact with any native English speakers, so it's easier to suspend your disbelief of them all actually speaking Russian in reality.
2. HBO casted people who actually look Russian.

Why doesn't Paramount Studios hire God when they film a movie about Christianity??? That doesn't make ANY sense to me!!

Why didn't Spielberg hire Tyrannosaurus Rex to play Tyrannosaurus Rex? That's such an obvious casting synonym, it's jarring! DUH!!! Heck, we have chickens, at least!

What do you mean, "they didn't hire a ghost" to play the lead role in "The Sixth Sense???" Why the FUCK would they hire Bruce Willis and spend millions!? THAT DOESN'T MAKE ANY SENSE TO ME, SO THEY ARE WRONG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

NEXT YOU'LL TRY TO JUSTIFY TO ME WHY THEY DIDN'T HIRE NON-HUMAN APES FOR THE "PLANET OF THE APES." YOU SICKEN ME, WOW I'M SO SMART.
>>
>>215039211
>it's exceedingly jarring to see someone that doesn't look or sound Russian at all play a Russian.
No? The American audience has been conditioned to it. 99% of all Russians are played by Europeans. And nobody can ever tell the difference, so why would you ever deal with Russian no-names? For what? For authentic Russian speech nobody in the West can even tell the difference between whether it's broken gibberish or not. Like, do you think anyone actually praised Anora for hiring actual Russian actors to speak actual Russian? And do you think anyone actually gauged the difference between Borisov's pronunciation and several clearly fake Russian characters in the movie? No. Nobody gives a fuck. That's not even only an American thing, Europeans do that too. The most egregious example I know of is I am Love (2009).
>>
>>215039343
Ghosts, God and T-Rex don't exist in reality unlike Russians, do, moron.
>>
>>215039211
You're just the same kind of woke asshole who throws a hiss fit if the person who plays an Indian is only 50 percent Cherokee or who wants to burn every copy of "the party" because Peter Sellers is not really Punjab. .
>>
>>215039388
>No? The American audience has been conditioned to it. 99% of all Russians are played by Europeans. And nobody can ever tell the difference, so why would you ever deal with Russian no-names?
Well, like I said, I get that you have no taste and treat films only as slop but if you actually care about your work you'd do it properly. Everybody complains about Giancarlo Esposito not being able to speak Spanish properly in Breaking Bad.
>>
>>215039432
Tone down the projection, tranny.
>>
>>215039450
>Well, like I said, I get that you have no taste
Nigger, this has nothing to do with taste. There is no difference to an American view. Barely anyone speaks Russian in the US. Are you pretending you can discern whether a native speaker is authentic for every language? I guarantee you, stupid nigger faggot, you have watched a movie where someone said something in broken European or Semitic languages and didn't bat an eye. So in turn you are also a slop consumer, just an even more ignorant one.
>>
>Why?
Reason given.
>lol, gotchu -- I didn't make a thread to argue or discuss something; my presenting a question was a false-flag! I merely made a thread to complain loudly!
>I accept the reason you give me, but I have already formed my opinion about this, so it's irrelevant to me or my thread!
>So I'm going to continue complaining!
The Internet.
>>
>>215039526
If you have a film or a show set in a foreign country, or prominently feature foreigners in its cast and don't bother to hire people who can actually speak the language, then your film is slop that's not even worth watching. This includes both "broken gibberish" or just speaking with accents. (Non-serious comedic movies like Austin Powers are exempt from this rule due to them inherently not taking themselves seriously).

What's worse for you is I can even name an example of a film in a similar genre that's done this situation better - The Bourne Identity. All of the main cast are Americans who are just in France for the sake of the setting. And the one foreign woman, Maria who is a Swiss German, is actually played by a German actress who both looks like a German and can speak German. This adds a lot to the verisimilitude and immersion of the film. If you don't bother with that while making a serious film, then it's worthless garbage. Simple as.

hard to find russian actors who aren't wasted all day
