Dragonball Z started with the arrival of Raditz, and there was zero prior context given for viewers who had never heard of original Dragonball (which was basically everybody). Because internet access was a lot more limited, and filesharing (even through newsgroups) was fucking slow and you had to be a super nerd, you would instead learn about Dragonball through hearsay on the elementary school playground or from someone's older brother who took a year of Japanese and totally knew everything about anime (like dude, in Japan, Sailor Moon is naked when she transforms and they show it all). 3. Cartoon Network became the main broadcasting source for Dragonball Z, and you'd get 2 episodes a day on Toonami right after school. Remember how I said the entire show wasn't available? Well, when they ran out of content due to not having acquired more episodes of Dragonball Z, they'd just restart the show from the beginning until they finally bought the rest. Imagine watching the show until Goku arrives on Planet Namek and is about the fight the Ginyu Force... then the show just restarts from the beginning because they don't have any more episodes. Anyway, yes I am an ancient Lich, but this is what we had to do for anime back in the day.

My favorite was due to the lack of internet, kids would tell bullshit and everyone would believe them.
