Can we have a meta thread on why we each watch movies?

I do it simply for escapist entertainment, about places I will never visit, or times I will never live through. That is pretty much all.
I don't think there is a single instance of a movie that revealed to me something profound or illuminating, I don't believe it is a format that can do so, otherwise it wouldn't be lowest common denominator entertainment for working and middle classes.
