I have a friend (female) who likes horror films, and we've been hanging out recently to watch them, either at her dorm or mine. She doesn't have a roommate, so we usually do it at hers. These 'scary movies', as she calls them, are always high-budget Hollywood slop that came out in the last decade or so. I told her last week I knew about a really scary movie by this French dude, and she was intrigued, and so we started watching Irreversible.But when the rape scene started playing, she started crying, asking when it was going to be over. I honestly forgot how fucking long it was, and just said 'in like 30 seconds I swear' probably three times. Probably the awkwardest thing I have ever experienced. When the guy started pounding Bellucci's face into the ground she asked me to turn it off and said she wanted to be alone. This happened on Friday and she still hasn't talked to me. Irreversible unironically is a great movie. It perfectly utilizes the reverse timeline trick. Usually when something awful happens at the end of the movie your thoughts fade away soon as you turn it off, but if it happens at the beginning / middle section then it stays with you as you keep watching, that dread hangs on. And in this case the more you watch it the more uncomfortable you feel - 'Belucci's character didn't have to dress up so slutily', 'Shit, she was pregnant the whole time', 'Vincent Cassel should've stayed with her', etc. I know two liberal art hoes and interestingly enough one hates this movie with a passion because she finds it disgusting and immoral but the other one loves it because it depicts the fragility of life, how everything can go wrong so suddenly, also because 'men bad'
