>>
>>215053684
Solar Concentrating farms are nothing new you fucking retard.
This one probably uses molten salts as the thermal storage medium, coal power station output levels.
If the land is cheap and not useful for agriculture etc then it's very effective with the other major consideration being transmission losses.
>>
>>215053684
>>215053723
Ironically, the one on the bottom (Ivanpah Solar Power Facility) uses an enormous amount of fossil fuel. It requires something like 500 million cubic feet of gas per year, needed to get the plant started in the morning. One of several reasons its being shut down.
>>
>>215055034
It's not solar panels but mirrors and liquid salt so it keeps making energy even in the first hours of the night. which makes the silicon lobby really mad because they spent so much convincing everyone that mining and converting all that minerals for a panel with a 5-10 years lifespan; of making energy only a percentage of the day and needing to be babysit regularly so it doesn't get dirty and stops working, before it has to be decommissioned polluting even more, is actually the best option for renewable energy.

Same shit with cars.
If you changed your car 5 times to get the newer environmentally friendlier model you polluted 5 times as the guy still driving a 1993 ford escort, because making and discarding those cars pollutes more than they will by driving.
>>
>>215053723
Because they've bought into the insane meme that human activity is killing the planet and without us the climate would never change despite the fact that Earth's weather is an incredibly volatile system that is affected by dozens of things that are entirely outside of our control and we're just one big volcano eruption or meteorite or polar shift or slight change in solar activity from being nuked back to the ice age.

>>
>>215055034
We're too far from the sun to properly harness a decent amount of energy from it to power anything more than a phone charger and a tv per home, dyson sphere systems are the only way for solar to be an efficient source of energy and we're like 5,000 years from being able to build such a thing.
Pic is not even a solar field but a bunch of mirrors that concentrate heat on a stone to boil water.

My nigga dis something taught in high school science. Yes, global warming caused by humans won't annihilate the planet. It will, however, eventually annihilate humans and needlessly damage ecosystems. Both the right and left fall for different variations of the same meme to avoid really dealing with it. The left is suckered into buying into and investing in shit like these solar panels. This "clean energy" meme is that most of these supposed solutions are really crapitalist market gimmicks that put more effort into getting them mentioned in textbooks and scientific journals as "progress", "the next step", or shit like "clean energy of the future". The actual value and selling point of "clean energy" isn't its ability to do shit, it's its ability to seem like it does shit.

The right falls for the "overexaggeration" meme where they tend to bring up strawmans like the one you mentioned. Again, the problem isn't annihilating the world, it's sustaining a world where humans can prosper. Ironically, the right won't touch this shit despite supposedly being the "patriotic" / "anti immigrant" circle. China and India, alone account for >80% of total emissions, meaning if the whole entire world went green it wouldn't amount to shit. Literally, we need to genocide indians and invade China. The left is too soft to ever consider this, so instead they'll continue buying into the meme and act like they're doing something. The right is too arrogant to admit that there is a problem and that the policies they continue to keep have repeatedly made the problem worse. So you have this group retardation split into two factions, where one side acts devoted yet is too pussy to spread meaningful change (genociding indians) and the other acts ignorant because they'd rather keep their shitty, cushy ideals than make actual meaningful change (genociding indians).

>Can a chud tell me why Solar is bad so we can get this thread over with

Sure.

They're okay, they're just not "great". They're better than wind, but worse than literally any other renewable energy source such as hydroelectric or geothermal.
The main fault with solar and wind is that they have an economy almost like agriculture? You plant your panels in a big field, the sun comes out, the panels collect the energy given by the sun, you store that energy in a battery of some sort, and then people consume the energy in that battery. Solar panels are also typically installed in the middle of fucking nowhere: faraway from both the people consuming the energy and the people who can repair or maintain the panels. This is all annoying because most other sources of energy either: are out of the way but at least produce constant 24/7 energy (like a river) or the battery IS the fuel (like coal or uranium).
Solar panels are also a "consumer electronic" and like other electronics; early adopters are FUCKING STUPID. Every year we make better, cheaper, solar panels, so your 10 year old solar farm was not only REALLY EXPENSIVE, but it's probably fucking dogshit.

There is a reality where solar doesn't suck ass.
Designing, experimenting, and investing money, into the development of solar energy is a good idea. The sun provides tremendous amounts of energy, enough to power literally every plant on the planet, and we would be retarded to not capitalize on at least some of it. The sun also NEVER SETS in space, you can just follow it around all day, so any solar panels we make on Earth will have utility in space. There's also ?no reason to not make a better battery? any developments we make in batteries, or energy storage, have inherently useful applications in electronics and computers (EV car batteries are actually just big laptop batteries for example).

With all that in mind my personal opinion:
I think the government is being a huge faggot trying to "save/make money" by privatizing the development of these new experimental technologies through guilt tripping the public, and/or bribing companies, to build these fucking things for them. The government didn't ask for the publics permission, or beg them for money on public television, when they installed utility poles, built the suez canal, whenever they invade some 3rd world country for some inexplicably economic purpose, or invented and used nuclear bombs.
This wouldn't even be the first, or second, massive energy/grid change: people used to do everything with coal and firewood, then they switch to whale oil, and finally to fossil fuels. They never stopped and asked what the public wanted.

You can build a dozen huge coal plants and scrub the hell out of the emissions with the latest tech for what one new NPP costs. The fuel is cheap too
>>
>>215061184
the facility was built in 2010 and is quite large and sophisticated. At the time of it's design and construction, water was the feasible way to do it. It'd take entirely different engineering methods to use molten salt. Breakthrus in molten salt came during the construction. You can't just change from water to molten salt.

Understanding efficiency at this scale is also nearly entirely impossible till there are practical tests. We now know that this system of power is not really worth it. The gas used would be better spent on wind energy which is shown be much better than concentrated solar thermal.

Modern solar panels last between 30-50 years you fucking retard.
Even the older model lasted for a minimum of 10 years and then they still worked, but at a diminished capacity. Realistically you could have used them for 20 years before changing them.

A solar panel lasting 50 years vs 5-10 years as claimed by your lie, makes an a huge difference in your shit argument. An order of a magnitude worth of difference. Eat shit.

"last" as in, they produce so little energy that I might as well replace them with cheaper, modern panels.

The older polycrystaline models used to drop to 80% capacity after 10 years and around 50% after 20 years.
The newer ones, the monocrystaline ones, drop to 80% after 30 years and 50% after 50 years.

Modern solar panels will literally last for the entire duration of your life assuming your are installing them when buying your first house in the late 20s or early 30s.

i mean, it makes sense that easily accessible fossil fuels will eventually run out. especially considering how our consumption of it is constantly increasing.

the problem seems to be that unserious and very socially leftist individuals somehow became the primary advocates of alternative energy sources, which has tainted the industry and the debate surrounding out.
