Someone I knew once made an interesting note about the visuals of this scene: we seem to see Chigurh waiting on the other side of the door when Ed Tom approaches, but when Ed Tom opens the door, because of the light behind him, all he sees is his own shadow on the wall ([for reference](https://youtu.be/qEsao0tzmqU?si=NkqciZ_Q8ozgGXpA)). There's multiple ways to read that, but it seems like no coincidence that in the moment where Ed Tom finally tries to confront this otherworldly evil he's left to reckon with the shadow he casts, the legacy he leaves behind. Maybe it suggests Chigurh is a ghost in his head (in just this scene or perhaps the whole movie), maybe Chigurh is near supernatural in how good he is at outmaneuvering people (at least until the car accident), maybe this is just the moment that he has to come to terms with who he is (an old man being left behind, or perhaps a coward whose legacy is failure). Lots of ways to read that scene (including the possibility that, like in the book, Chigurh is still in the area but Ed Tom chooses not to pursue him himself).
