Definitely not. I don't even like JLaw but she's a solid actress. Mikey Madison did not deserve hers.

No wonder I forgot, so did the rest of the world. Rom-coms should be excluded from the oscars.
>>
The Oscar lost its value around 2006 or 2007, before Obama and the rise of race-bait politics and everything used to manipulate people. After that, people pretended it still held some value, but it went downhill in the following years. Between 2020 and 2025, the Oscars reached a new low in value.

With the exception of Oppenheimer, 2020s best pictures are just embarrassing Hallmark movies.

>>

>She did well in that movie though
So you're saying average actress did her best in a mediocre movie? Oh wow, definitely worth an Oscar!
And people aren't upset about the movie winning, they are upset the open corruption Weinstein pulled to get his movie win the Oscar. That was literally his peak as producer and he openly declared that he will make ANY movie and make is swoop all the important awards during the ceremony.
Zoomers really miss the context of what sort of dickhead Weinstein is, and think the worst he did was sleeping with bunch of actresses.

Shakespeare In Love was the catalyst for a whole new level of bribery and media pushes in the modern Oscars. I’m not sure why anyone gives them attention in the first place, they got decent coverage of the academy participants admitting they don’t even watch the contestants in the first place.

They don’t really advertise the wins either. Back in the video rental days it was a big thing to put all the little statues on the cover and blast out OSCAR WINNER. People would actively select for it.
On streaming it might be part of the blurb or sometimes they do an oscar winner showcase or something but honestly it barely shows up. The covers are generic slop and can’t show detailed information because the picture has to read on a phone screen.

Ask the Big Five. They are the people who constantly promote and market Oscars as this huge and most important thing, and then use them to promote their movies that they've bribed people to get awarded.
It's the most inefficient marketing campaign in existence.

Miramax produced a shit-ton of financially successful indie films in the 80s and early 90s, each earning several dozen times their budgets.

The Weinsteins were the first ones to monetize what was previously was an open secret in Hollywood: Most of the Academy Awards voters didn't watch the majority of the movies in the categories they were voting on, and had no strong opinions on who the winner would be. So they could be bribed, and because each category had like 5 entries to split the vote, a small swing could lead to a win.

What I mean by bribing is throwing really awesome parties for voters where they get treated like a star and get to hang out with cool, famous people and lots of pretty young girls in the months leading up to the Oscars, and everyone there is their friends, and at the end of the party they get handed a gift bag with a few hundred bucks of cool stuff "donated" by "sponsors" and it all says it's "for your consideration" of their film. So it creates good vibes and sways opinion, and the corruption is less greasy because it's becomes more about just helping your buddies out, who happen to throw sweet parties which you definitely want to get invited back to next year. These days, all the studios throw junkets like this, and everyone budgets for them now to stay competitive, but back in the early 90s, Miramax and Weinstein were the only guys in town.

So what they would do is give their chosen film a limited release to qualify it for the Oscars, then win the awards, then do the big release coupled with a big PR campaign on the strength of all of the Oscar nominations and wins. Your average mainstream idiot isn't going to go see some pretentious indie film, but back then the Academy Awards had a ton of cultural cache, and so there was a decent chance he was going to see a film that had won four Oscars, and they would make a hundred million off an indie film that cost $2.7M to produce and another $5 million in marketing.

The Oscars have always been a joke, not a real competition. It's airheads with millions patting themselves on the back and handing out awards to their fellow airheads either because of popularity or because it makes the award ceremony seem classy or intellectual.
That's what that Oscars have always been about: self-congratulatory and a PR machine to inflate the public image for the degenerate, out of touch, uneducated, and amoral whores that is Hollywood!

With that said, it did at least have some tinges of class and legitimacy back in the day. But I'd say the last 20 or so years it's just not even trying anymore.

It's like with people who take Idiocracy seriously, while it's just a high concept grossout comedy

It's a bad adaptation of a book that got dated by 1890, when Nelly Bly decided to see if it's possible to pull. It's easily one of the most undeserved Oscars in history. Considering it's either the weakest or 2nd weakest entry from that year... yeah

It's a very solid and very bleak movie about military being shit. Sold watch, easily Joaquin's best performance
It was originally scheduled to premiere 21st September 2001
You can probably guess why it didn't and why it was silently released almost two years later with minimal marketing

Still, solid movie and with a lot of familiar faces that were just starting out back then

In the year 1974, Al Pacino starred in The Godfather as Michael Corleone and Jack Nicholson starred in Chinatown as JJ Gittes. That movie was so shit, I can't believe I let those faggots trick me into watching it. Just like when ralphthemoviemaker tricked me into watching Mr. Robot, or when /tv/ tricked me into watching True Detective season 2. I will never forgive any of you
>>
>>215065673
>The point
>(You)
Let me walk you through this, you dense motherfucker
They've let the most blatant, by the number Oscar bait win. And after doing so, they've stropped pretending this shit is about anything else than bribery, while also appeasing random outrage groups.
Once the formula was grinded to the ground, there was nothing left.

As for 2010:
>Oscar bait
>Pretentious Oscar bait
>Boxing movie
>Genre movie
>Lesbian Oscar bait
>Genre movie
>Biopic
>Animated movie
>Remake
>Oscar bait adaptation
In other words: either shit movies or movies that stood no chance ever winning. It was a year where it was a coin toss between King's Speech and Black Swan anyway. The Kids are all Right got added solely for LPGBBQ+ points, since lesbian sex is kosher and thus allowed. Everything else was random picks that got lobbied HARD by their producers, since it was also the year where lobbying became not just obvious, but open.
>>
>>215065820
>or when /tv/ tricked me into watching True Detective season 2.

>>
>>215066101
Jesus, this must been rough.
There are people who didn't see season 1 and went directly to 2, so for them the blow isn't as devastating. But going from 1 to 2 is like catching a sledgehammer with your face.

In addition to what >>215059876 said it was Harvey (or the Weinsteins) who realized the Academy has plenty of dormant members. Typically ageing professionals who spent decades in the various roles of the industry but became less and less involved or even turned inactive as the time went by. But as members of the Academy they can still cast a vote. And the vote of the President of Paramount is worth the same as a 83 years old former best boy who's now living in hospice care in a small Southern Californian town. Many of these must have been so grateful that somebody gave enough fucks to send them their film on VHS/DVD with a short letter that reminded them of the upcoming voting. I can't give you concrete numbers off the top of my head but Academy membership still hovers around 10k nowadays.
