I personally think there's more to it than it being a reference. There's something inherently amusing about the phrasing, the setting, the context, it's a very bleak scene and a contemporary portrait of communication breakdown and desperation. It's funny because it's funny, not because it's chrischan. It's characterization, borrowing from another father at his wit's end.

All the chrischan memes are difficult to untangle from the bullying of chrischan and I understand why someone would find it distasteful but I believe there's something funny/poetic about it even if's difficult to divorce it from the lolcow aspect.
