In 1960s ad agencies did 70-80% of their revenue from media space sales. Advertising was a window dressing thrown on top.

In 1967 US had around 1700-1800 daily newspapers, 3400 AM radio channels and +5000 magazines. Just compiling their spot prices, purchase packages, customer demographics, bulk purchases, ad tracking, conversion rates etc. would require spreadsheets that need computerization.

So for example a computer operator could check how many US Newspapers had ran adds for Chevy Vega in the last quarter when the boys from Detroit called and wanted an update to sell remainining pre-facelift models before turn of 1973 or something.

If we are bit simplistic marketing of these mostly undifferentiated consumer goods with low brand value was seen as being directly tied to marketing operations. Need to sell more Champion sweatshirts this quarter? Sell them at a discount and buy add space everywhere. Too much demand for your TV set? Increase price, spend the premiums in building value (R&D, branding, design) or invest in additional production by building new lines/buying out competion - optimally all three - and try to corner market when new factories allow you to flood markets. Marketing is a short term crutch here to drive sales, when nowadays sales tend to be the preferred method in mostly stagnant consumer good product markets.

Probably a lot of paper files being modernized to data formats, all of accounting, starting to create demographic databases, modernizing contracts etc. At least in the first office they had a finance office never really shown.
